Since the late 1970s, the Berlin-based contemporary artist Isa Genzken (b. 1948) has produced a body of work that is remarkable for its formal and material inventiveness. In her sculptural practice, Genzken has developed an expanded material repertoire that includes plaster, concrete, epoxy resin, and mass-produced objects that range from action figures to discarded pizza boxes. Her heterogeneous assemblages, a New York Times critic observes, are "brash, improvisational, full of searing color and attitude." Genzken, the recent subject of a major retrospective at MoMA, offers a highly original interpretation of modernist, avant-garde, and postminimalist practices even as she engages pressing sociopolitics and economic issues of the present. These illustrated essays address the full span of Genzken's work, from the elegant floor sculptures with which she began her career to the assemblages, bursting with color and bristling with bric-a-brac, that she has produced since the beginning of the millennium. The texts, by writers including Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, and the artist herself, consider her formation in the West German milieu; her critique of conventions of architecture, reconstruction, and memorialization; her sympathy with mass culture; and her ongoing interrogation of public and private spheres. Two texts appear in English for the first time, including a quasi-autobiographical screenplay written by Genzken in 1993. Contributors Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin H. D. The work of German sculptor Isa Genzken is brilliantly receptive to the ever-shifting conditions of modern life. In this first book devoted to the artist, Lisa Lee reflects on Genzken’s tendency to think across media, attending to sculptures, photographs, drawings, and films from the entire span of her four-decade career, from student projects in the mid-1970s to recent works seen in Genzken’s studio. Through penetrating analyses of individual works as well as archival and interview material from the artist herself, Lee establishes four major themes in Genzken’s oeuvre: embodied perception, architecture and built space, the commodity, and the body. Contextualizing the sculptor’s engagement with fellow artists, such as Joseph Beuys and Bruce Nauman, Lee situates Genzken within a critical and historical framework that begins in politically fraught 1960s West Germany and extends to the globalized present. Here we see how Genzken tests the relevance of the utopian aspirations and formal innovations of the early twentieth century by submitting them to homage and travesty. Sure to set the standard for future studies of Genzken’s work, Isa Genzken is essential for anyone interested in contemporary art.

Isa Genzken's sculpture is concerned with what surrounds us and shapes our everyday existence, from design, advertising, and the media to her most enduring subject, architecture and the urban environment. The artist is interested in the ways in which aesthetic styles - the unadorned angularity of modernist architecture for example -embody and enforce political and social ideologies. Urlaub constitutes Genzken's multilayered inquiry into the meaning of work and leisure. "Artists never take vacations," Genzken says, "but the entire art system urgently needs a vacation." Vanessa Joan M ller examines how Genzken's recent work establishes a critical discourse about architecture and design as exposed sites of aesthetic and cultural formation. Discussing the artist's "beach house" series, small architectural models with playfully defined interiors/exteriors, the author writes that one can read them "as a pointed commentary on postmodern architecture, as a subtle attack on the predominant taste of the times. When Genzken gets involved with the miniaturization of this kind of architecture - which could be realized in principle - turning it into small-format sculpture, the procedure emphasizes the ambiguity of the subject toward a particular 'resort-style beach life'. The aspect of playing with form and material should therefore not deceive: the beach house is a status symbol that can only be found on the exclusive beaches of this world, and hence it is simultaneously the object of envy and a hallmark of distinction." This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Urlaub" at Frankfurter Kunstverein, May 27 - August 6, 2000.

"Isa Genzken is arguably one of the most important and influential female artists of the past 30 years, yet the breadth of her achievement -- which spans sculptures, paintings, photographs, collages, drawings, artist's books, films, installations and public works -- is still largely unknown in the United States. Published in conjunction with the first comprehensive retrospective of the artist's epically diverse body of work, this publication encompasses Genzken's work in all media over the past 40 years and is the most complete monograph on the artist available in English. Genzken has been part of the artistic discourse since she began exhibiting in the mid-1970s, but over the last decade a new generation of artists has been inspired by her radical inventiveness. The past ten years have been particularly productive for Genzken, who has created several bodies of work that have redefined assemblage for a new era. The catalogue presents Genzken's career, through essays exploring the unfolding of her practice from 1973 until today, as well as an expansive plate section that provides a chronological overview of all her most important bodies of work and key exhibitions. Born in Germany in 1948, Isa Genzken is one of Germany's most important living artists. In the mid-1970s, as a student at Düsseldorf's renowned Kunstakademie, she created geometric wood sculptures, which gained her early international acclaim (she exhibited these works at Documenta 7 and the Venice Biennale in 1982). Since then, she has made sculptures in plaster, concrete and epoxy resin. Ranging in size from maquettes to monumental, these abstract works are influenced by Minimalism, but are decidedly narrative. Paintings that examine ideas of surface and light, as well as photographs, collages, artist's books and films, followed in the 1990s. From the late 90s on, Genzken began to create increasingly complex sculptural installations"--Amazon.com, viewed December 18, 2013.

Isa Genzken is one of the most important, multifaceted, always surprising artists working anywhere worldwide. This is evidenced not only by her largescale exhibitions of recent years, but also by her repeated participation in the documenta in Kassel, the Biennale in Venice or Skulptur Projekte in Mu?nster. She is known for her enormous creative energy and the ability, implicit in her work, to repeatedly reposition herself with artistic curiosity. Her realized and unrealized outdoor sculptures and projects for the public space show the artist?s interest in space and the (in this case architectural) environment. Operating in the ?eld of tension between architecture and art, she questions principles of proportions and the relationship between object and viewer, and examines the ways in which perceptions of public space inform and condition our consciousness.00Exhibition: Galerie Buchholz, Berlin, Germany (2019).

This publication, styled as a magazine, presents a new body of work, architectural proposals for Ground Zero, the twenty first centurys most historically significant site. These proposals take the form of architecturally induced sculptures produced in consultation with a specialist team of engineers so that each model can be realised its true architectural scale. Running contrary to official designs, Genzken envisages buildings with a social purpose a church, hospital, car park, disco, memorial and shopping centre. Her proposals draw upon the artists long-standing love affair with Americas breathtaking cityscapes and all pervasive culture. With its glitzy, seductive surfaces, slim rectangular forms and frenetic energy, the work betrays a fascination with the skyscraper. New York represents a vital source of energy that Genzken returns to again and again and which is intrinsically related to what she does: To me New York has a direct link with sculpture. Consisting of brightly coloured fabrics, outdoor parasols, sheet steel, mirror tile, saccharine photographs of animals and a plethora of household chintz, Genzkens output is ultimately precarious: a hedonistic concoction in which clashing elements congregate and collide. For over thirty years she has developed a radically variegated career that refuses to let the viewer know what to expect.

This large-format collage book was created in Berlin around 15 years ago. It is both a personal diary and an artistic manifesto. In it are portrait photos of Genzken and her friends, cuttings from advertisements and glamour magazines, male pin-ups, illustrations of fences and grates from animal enclosures, mostly bare trees, bushes and forests, columns, facades and strange details from her own work and installations, postcards of historical paintings as well as handwritten notes. The overwhelming number of images obtains a surprisingly harmonious form. Genzken uses brown sticky tape and silver textured textile tape; black, blue, red and strongly vibrant green neon papers to give the book a dramatic structure. In this way she creates windows and doors with views in and views out.The format of the pages gradually becomes larger through the course of the book, giving it an astounding physicality. It grants an insight into the thought and work of one of the most important contemporary artists of our time.Published on the occasion of Isa Genzken's major retrospective at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 29 November 2015 - 6 March 2016.

X93;The Only Female Fool” is how Isa Genzken describes herself in the self-chosen title of her exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien. This statement is typical of the fluid boundaries between deep seriousness and the exuberant, eccentric spirit that pervades her work. Genzken’s artistic practice is characterized by a wide spectrum of media and forms, although her roots in sculpture always remain visible. The exhibition and catalogue focus on specific aspects of her oeuvre, including the mirror motif, the examination of architecture, and space as a social sphere; where early works are juxtaposed with series from later creative periods. Genzken’s collaboration with other artists and her admiration for certain artistic positions is also brought into focus, and selected works by Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark, Jasper Johns, Gerhard Richter, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Lawrence Weiner are presented in dialogue with Genzken’s multilayered work. 00Exhibition: Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria (28.05-07.09.2014).
