David Pierpont Gardner was president of one of the world's most distinguished centers of higher learning—the nine-campus University of California—from 1983 to 1992. In this remarkably candid and lively memoir he provides an insider's account of what it was like for a very private, reflective man to live an extremely public life as leader of one of the most complex and controversial institutions in the country. Earning My Degree is a portrait of uncommon leadership and courage and a chronicle of how these traits shaped a treasured, and sometimes mystifying, American institution. Before his tenure as president, Gardner spent seven years at the University of California, Santa Barbara, during a tumultuous era of culture wars, ethnic division, and anti–Vietnam War protests, leaving his post as vice chancellor to serve as vice president of the University of California from 1971 to 1973. In 1973 he was named president of the University of Utah, and while there he chaired the National Commission on Excellence in High Education, which authored A Nation at Risk, regarded today as the twentieth century's most telling report on the condition of American public schools. As president of the University of California, he contended with intense controversies over affirmative action, animal rights, AIDS research, weapons labs, divestment in South Africa, and much more. This memoir recounts his experiences with these and other issues and describes his dealings with the diverse cast of characters who influence the university: U.S. presidents, governors, legislators, regents, chancellors, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors. The epilogue of Earning My Degree is a thoughtful and engaging account of the ten years since Gardner's retirement that includes his personal views about what has truly mattered in his life.

DELVE INTO THE REALM OF TWILIGHT is a novel set during the height of Louis XIV, dealing with the realm of magic and witchcraft that manifests in the insatiable desires of three witches as they abduct a mortal as their eternal lover. The mortal, Alexus, becomes immortal, living in the Realm of Twilight, a parallel dimension. Arian, Alexus' wife, sacrifices herself to save her husband. For Arian's interference, Arian is trapped herself in the Realm of Twilight and is forced to endure seeing Alexus throughout time be reincarnated and married to whomever he chooses never will she have that option as she has been entombed alive. Imprisoned for 300 years, Arian finally has the chance to escape, providing that she can contact Alexus in the modern day, for he has reincarnated as Sebastian Simons. And if she does contact him, he has a family. If her spell can be broken, will she age her 300 years? The witches are immortal as well and have the same possibility of capturing and killing her husband, rather than imprisonment. Is her love and sacrifice, ideals of the past, still pertinent after 300 years? Magic and fortune telling has mesmerized humanity for centuries. DELVE INTO THE REALM OF TWIGLIGHT is steeped with poetic spells tantalizing the reader with an array of topics depicting resurrection, cloaking, memory loss and, of course, love potions.

What is this story about? Its about Kate Flanigans personal tragedy, and how she finds the strength to heal and develop a new lifestyle after the staggering blow on Michigans Grand Traverse Bay. Its about Frannie Sullivan, a poet who frees herself from factory work escaping with her fianc to build a new existence in sparkling Elk Rapids, Michigan. Its about Sally McGee and her high school friends in the desert of Fountain Hills, Arizona. The three females magically merge, hither and yon, during episodes of tragic and joyous happenings. Its also about the wonder of spirit in Dublin, Ireland and how the dynamic of force symbolizes a more beautiful America. A special beauty reigns over Grand Traverse Bay from Traverse City to Kewadin, Michigan. This land of my heart fronts the Bay with views of Lake Michigan as far as the eye can see. Cherry orchards and sunflower fields add magic to the forests of pine and juniper that permeate the area. In his classic A Geography of Oysters, Rowan Jacobsen forever changed the way America talks about its best bivalve. Now he does the same for our favorite fruit, showing us that there is indeed life beyond Red Delicious-and even Honeycrisp. While supermarkets limit their offerings to a few waxy options, apple trees with lives spanning human generations are producing characterful varieties-and now they are in the midst of a rediscovery. From heirlooms to new designer breeds, a delicious diversity of apples is out there for the eating. Apples have strong personalities, ranging from crabby to wholesome. The Black Oxford apple is actually purple, and looks like a plum. The Knobbed Russet looks like the love child of a toad and a potato. (But don't be fooled by its looks.) The D'Arcy Spice leaves a hint of allspice on the tongue. Cut Hidden Rose open and its inner secret is revealed. With more than 150 art-quality color photographs, Apples of Uncommon Character shows us the fruit in all its glory. Jacobsen collected specimens both common and rare from all over North America, selecting 120 to feature, including the best varieties for eating, baking, and hard-cider making. Each is accompanied by a photograph, history, lore, and a list of characteristics. The book also includes 20 recipes, savory and sweet, resources for buying and growing, and a guide to the best apple festivals. It's a must-have for every foodie.
