A specialist in hand surgery will not be available at all hospitals for some years. In the meantime, the fate of the patient will continue to rest in the hands of the surgeon who first treats him. It is essential, therefore, that both the novice and the accomplished surgeon have a sound grasp of the diagnostic and therapeutic fundamentals of hand surgery. The material in this book is presented in a clear, practical manner by a general surgeon who has successfully practiced hand surgery; the result is an especially useful and rewarding book. Many acute situations in hand surgery are not as complicated as they appear to be, whereas other problems can be handled only after much study and experience. Based on his experience with over 7000 general and emergency opera tions yearly at the Ludwigshafen Surgical Clinic and after years of inten sive work in the field of hand surgery, my medical chief, Dr. H. R. Mittelbach, has taken the time and trouble to write this handbook for general and clinical practice. For the practicing surgeon and especially the resident, the most important aspects of the treatment of hand injuries have been presented in a clear, concise manner. The didactic excellence of the material, its novel format, and the simple yet forceful drawings that obviate lengthy text descriptions enable the reader to become quickly oriented. However, the book is more thanjust a "cookbook" for quick reference.

Significance Of Effective Hand Washing And Reducing Surgical Site Infections

Since the beginning of time, infections have been a problem amongst patients cared for at home or hospital settings. Research has shown that infection rates have gotten better and people like Florence Nightengale are to thank for the awareness being brought to medical personnel. It has been brought to many health care workers' attention that patients don't normally arrive with infections, but somehow leave with them whether they are in a hospital or outpatient surgery centers, this leads many to see that it is the health care providers who are carrying the infections and spreading them as they care for patients. In the following proposal, the problem of surgical site infections (SSI's) and hospital acquired infections (HAI's) is explained and offers various possible solutions to decrease and stop SSI's and HAI's from occurring at medical facilities. An implementation plan as well as an evaluation plan is included in the proposal. Getting all the stakeholders involved is also described in the dissemination plan. Finally, there will be patient surveys and a hand hygiene questionnaire to proceed with the proposal. Studies have shown that hand hygiene, whether its soap and water or alcohol based hand rubs help to decrease bacteria on a health care provider's hands or family members' hands, which helps to stop the spread of infection post operatively and during a stay at a hospital. Something so small can save patients, families, healthcare facilities, time and money.

Using our hands, we interact with the environment in ways that are more sophisticated, more varied, and more productive than any other part of our body. The delicate instrument that is the hand makes it possible for us to knead dough and perform a heart transplant; make contact with strangers, friends, and lovers; throw a baseball; and create a scale model of a skyscraper and build that skyscraper. From the most mundane activity to our most sublime achievement, the hand has helped us shape the world and given us a deeper understanding of our place in it. In The Wonder of the Human Hand, surgeons and hand specialists from the world-renowned Curtis National Hand Center describe how the hand is used in work, sports, and music, and trace the human fascination with hands in religion and art. They relate awe-inspiring stories of people throughout history—including major league pitcher Jim Abbott, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Liebe Diamond, and pianist Leon Fleisher—who accomplished great things with one hand, or with impaired or injured hands, and they tell of marvelous surgeries that create fingers where none exist. Recounting how the hand interprets the environment and returns tactile information to the brain, the book underscores the importance of the hand to people who cannot see or hear. Throughout, the authors explore how medical science restores bones, tendons, nerves, muscles, and blood vessels in hands injured through disease, accident, and combat—ever aware of how the form and function of the human hand combine harmoniously in everyday activities and Herculean efforts alike.

The second section is devoted to management of infections in patients with the different underlying hematological malignancies, while the third addresses several important topics that are often ignored in most books about infections and hematological malignancies.
