The author has compiled an adventure memoir in photo essay form, recalling when he worked as volunteer 1975-1980 aboard historic ships of the San Francisco Maritime Museum. He learned from the crew of the Cape Horn square-rigger Balclutha (1886), now moored permanently at the end of the Hyde Street Pier. He later went on to become president of the Friends of the Eppleton Hall Society, which operated the steam side-paddle estuary tug, Eppleton Hall (1914). She had steamed over from England 1969-1970 by officers of the maritime museum. The beloved tug had many daring and amusing jaunts on San Francisco Bay, with one long trip to Lost Isle, on the San Joaquin River near Stockton, CA. This ugly duckling was loved by those volunteers and families who made her operational. Her notoriety was such that the captain of the Queen Elizabeth 2 gave the tug a commemorative crystal when that great liner made her first visit to San Francisco in April 1978. About that time the author was the West Coast liaison for Sea History magazine, the publication of the National Maritime Historical Society in Peekskill, NY. The tug was retired when the maritime museum was later turned over to the National Park Service. The book closes with the author's lively account when, in June 1980, he was guest aboard the U.S. Coast Guard square-rigger Eagle, when she sailed, with scuppers awash, from Boston's OpSail to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. From the introduction by Peter Stanford, President Emeritus of the NMHS..."The book's title, In Bristol Fashion, is the seaman's universal expression of the highest mark for a job done in true seamanly fashion - a well-earned tribute to the people from varied walks of life who saved an abandoned treasure, to a spirit that shines through this book."

"In Bristol Fashion" is the first of a two-volume fictionalized biography of the Lewis', the Hooper's and their extended families. Set in Glamorgan, Wales and Bristol, England, the sharp scent of the Celtic Sea seeps into the saga of smugglers, sailors and high sea adventures during the tumultuous years of Victoria's reign. Faced with situations very similar to those of our current times: ill-conceived foreign wars, economic depressions, radical changes in life styles, "the man in the street" and how he copes, is a theme that runs throughout the book.

Airship Shape & Bristol Fashion brings together tales from the light and dark sides of steampunk. Living ghosts, walking ferns and ingenious androids populate visions of the city of Bristol at once familiar and peculiar. Above them soar magnificent men, and women, in their flying machines. Whether they are seeking release, revenge or adventure, the characters in these stories will draw you down the side-streets of Bristol to the brass and steam-filled worlds you never dreamed were there. Take a walk around Bristol, and history seeps from the walls. The city can claim more than its fair share of firsts, including the first iron-hulled steamship, the first female doctor, the first chocolate bar and the first use of nitrous oxide as an anaesthetic, the invention of the Plimsoll line, the first undersea telegraph cable, the world’s first test tube baby and the first transplant organ grown from stem cells, and a large share of the world’s first supersonic airliner. Now, from this fertile ground comes an anthology charting other realities and alternate histories, in a collection as rich and varied as the true history of this great British city. — Gareth L. Powell

Kate Adie's story is an unusual one. Raised in post-war Sunderland, where life was 'a sunny experience, full of meat-paste sandwiches and Sunday school', she has reported memorably and courageously from many of the world's trouble spots since she joined the BBC in 1969. THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS encompasses Adie's reporting from, inter alia, Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Tiananmen Square and, of course, the Gulf War of 1991. It offers a compelling combination of vivid frontline reporting and evocative writing and reveals the extraordinarily demanding life of the woman who is always at the heart of the action. Although an intensely private person, Kate Adie also divulges what it's like to be a woman in a man's world - an inspiration to many working women.
