The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a program for improving undergraduate study habits using self-hypnosis as the major component. By its nature, self-hypnosis has helped to decrease the potency of the prevalent stigma that hypnosis leads to an individual's loss of self-control, which has in turn helped to increase the overall acceptance of hypnotic intervention within clinical realms. Self-hypnosis also has the advantage of being practiced in the absence of a clinician, which reduces the cost of its implementation. These combined advantages make self-hypnosis an ideal choice for cost-effective treatment in areas where hypnotic phenomena have been shown to be effective. This dissertation reviews various theoretical models of hypnosis, research regarding the differences between the effects of self-hypnosis and hetero-hypnosis, and research around the use of hypnotic interventions in academic settings. Following a review of the current research about hypnosis and the utility of hypnotic phenomena in the area of academics, this dissertation outlines a proposed program for utilizing self-hypnosis to improve academic performance in undergraduate students through amelioration of test anxiety, enhancing study skills, increasing student focus, and the improvement of student self-regulatory behavior.
