LOUISIANA PLAYS by Hiram Ed Taylor is a collection of 4 plays developed in workshops or staged readings at the New Orleans Theatre Experiments Lab, a group dedicated to creating new works about Louisiana. The first play, PROPHECY a comedy about the future of mankind was given two staged readings before an audience at the Contemporary Arts Center. The second play SAVAGE PRIDE, a ghost play about survival, was also given a reading at the CAC. The third a musical about sex, BOURBON STREET had 5 songs performed at the DramaRama Festival at the CAC and then a staged presentation at LePetit Theatre du Vieux Carre. The last musical about life after death, HEAVENS BAR was presented at the Firehouse Theatre in Mobile, Alabama. Taken as a group they represent a body of work by Mr. Taylor over the past 8 years. All four scripts are comedy, although they border on serious themes and are dramatic and tragic in places. Louisiana serves as a place where life and human folly are examined in comic detail. There is an abundance of terrific roles for women in each play; especially for older actresses over 40. They seem to represent the MotherGoddess who controls the flow of the script through the mess the men characters make of their lives. Wife, mother, fortune teller, heavenly bartender (god) or whore, they are the power in each script. The scripts may not seen commercial because of their content and language. Musicals about sex with S&M numbers and Homosexuality presented as normal every day events are hard to get produced in current regional theaters concerned with their grants being cut because of the current government standards. Although Southern Baptist audiences in Mobile, Alabama loved HEAVENS BAR, script readers in other parts of the country have decided it is too much about religion for their theaters to take a chance on possibly offending someones beliefs. So, we have chosen to publish the plays as written without care who they may outrage. They are bold and they are daring and isnt that what good theater is suppose to be about? They are also highly theatrical and deserve to be on a stage performed live for an audience. But, until that time, here they are in print.

Kept is a memoir that recounts the defining moments in my journey from life in a middle-class African-American family tightly bound by duty and God to a life of prostitution, drugs, and crime, and ultimately to the life I lead now- defined by faith, community, and family. It's a journey that stretches from California through Arizona and Texas and on to Memphis. This is not just another story about a woman who loses her way and finds redemption in the end. Even in cheap hotels, dens of drug lords, and prison cells, I always spoke to God. My faith sustained me, as did my love for the man who traveled this broken path along with me. That love despite extraordinary obstacles, became the foundation for the rest of my life.

“A biography that will send readers back to the music of Mavis and the Staple Singers with deepened appreciation and a renewed spirit of discovery” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)—from the acclaimed music journalist and author featured prominently in the new HBO documentary Mavis! This is the untold story of living legend Mavis Staples—lead singer of the Staple Singers and a major figure in the music that shaped the civil rights era. One of the most enduring artists of popular music, Mavis and her talented family fused gospel, soul, folk, and rock to transcend racism and oppression through song. Honing her prodigious talent on the Southern gospel circuit of the 1950s, Mavis and the Staple Singers went on to sell more than 30 million records, with message-oriented soul music that became a soundtrack to the civil rights movement—inspiring Martin Luther King, Jr. himself. Critically acclaimed biographer and Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot cuts to the heart of Mavis Staples’s music, revealing the intimate stories of her sixty-year career. From her love affair with Bob Dylan, to her creative collaborations with Prince, to her recent revival alongside Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, this definitive account shows Mavis as you’ve never seen her before. I’ll Take You There was written with the complete cooperation of Mavis and her family. Readers will also hear from Prince, Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne, and many others whose lives have been influenced by Mavis’s talent. Filled with never-before-told stories, this fascinating biography illuminates a legendary singer and group during a historic period of change in America. “Ultimately, Kot depicts the endurance of Mavis Staples and her family’s music as an inspiration, a saga that takes us, like the song that inspired this book’s name, to a place where ain’t nobody crying” (The Washington Post).

The earth was being destroyed by its inhabitants, and as many as possible of those who realized it left the planet in a massive spaceship fitted out to travel for generations, taking with it all the basics in supplies and information that the travelers would need to start again after the earth thawed from its nuclear winter. An agrarian society, Mir was a place of peace where everyone had a job of their choice to do. The Council (known by all) met every month to see that things went well and the Watchers (two men and two women known only by one another) worked to quietly oversee the safety of Mir. When a young boy saw a friend carrying something impossibly heavy and strange looking on his scooter, he expressed his concern to his friend the blacksmith (a watcher). His friend calmed the boy down, but he himself was concerned, reminded of the time of darkness. Soon two incidents of memory loss and extreme violence occurred, and it was clear that something bad had come to Mir. It took two children and a strange pale little man to literally unearth and solve the problem and return Mir to peace.

Augustine Roberts is a New England Yankee, transplanted by circumstance first to Argentina and then to Rome, from where frequent travel took him to nearly every part of the globe. The historical era into which he was born, so fraught with personal and communal soul-searching, also made him wrestle with al the tensions of the contemporary church and world. Finding the Treasure tells of Dom Augustine's conversion to the Catholic Church while attending Yale and of his remarkably varied monastic experience during the turbulent years of church renewal following Vatican II. These letters from a global monk will not disappoint anyone fascinated by the paradox of a monk who, rooted by vow to his monastery, becomes a globe-trotter precisely out of deep obedience. Augustine Roberts, OCSO, has been a Trappist monk since the early 1950s. After serving as abbot of St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, he became Procurator General of the Trappist Order. In the 1960s he was one of the founders of the first abbey of his Order in South America, later serving as its abbot. Today he is a much sought-after guide, called to help many communities in the delicate task of adapting the perennial monastic way of life to the needs of the twenty-first century.
