"Professional carer" - it's almost a contradiction in terms. Let down by the 'system' Ann Benton, aided by a team of helpers, charts the journey of her father-in-law from unsatisfactory hospital care, through spectacularly absent 'care in the community', to being looked after at home. In eight easy-to-digest chapters she gives a Christian perspective on caring for your aged parent as well as giving practical tools to help those, who find themselves in the same situation, negotiate the difficulties more easily. Ann brings out the positive benefits of caring for those unable to look after themselves in her light-hearted, poignant and straightforward manner. In an aging population virtually all of us will have to face the issues that are presented in this book. We should be thankful that we will have such wise and clear advice when we get to that moment.

IF YOU'RE TIRED OF REJECTION, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. Whether you are a novice writer or a veteran who has already had your work published, rejection is often a frustrating reality. Literary agents and editors receive and reject hundreds of manuscripts each month. While it's the job of these publishing professionals to be discriminating, it's the job of the writer to produce a manuscript that immediately stands out among the vast competition. And those outstanding qualities, says New York literary agent Noah Lukeman, have to be apparent from the first five pages. The First Five Pages reveals the necessary elements of good writing, whether it be fiction, nonfiction, journalism, or poetry, and points out errors to be avoided, such as * A weak opening hook * Overuse of adjectives and adverbs * Flat or forced metaphors or similes * Melodramatic, commonplace or confusing dialogue * Undeveloped characterizations and lifeless settings * Uneven pacing and lack of progression With exercises at the end of each chapter, this invaluable reference will allow novelists, journalists, poets and screenwriters alike to improve their technique as they learn to eliminate even the most subtle mistakes that are cause for rejection. The First Five Pages will help writers at every stage take their art to a higher -- and more successful -- level.

My mother came from a large family, and she loved to tell me about all the things she got into with her brothers and sisters. When she began to lose her short-term memory, she could still recall in vivid detail all of the stories she had told me as I was growing up. She knew that I enjoyed writing, and she asked me if I would like to come stay with her once and write down all the things she could remember. What a priceless gift! This collection of short stories was inspired by her insight and sense of humor. I also drew inspiration from observations I made as a child and, later, as an adult living in rural areas throughout the South and Midwest. The stories in my collection deal with the struggles and triumphs of people from other periods of time, some far in the past, others close enough that we baby-boomers can remember. And yet, regardless of how far separated we are from these times, we still share the same emotions. Most of us can relate to one or more of these: the contrition in the heart of the young teacher who punished her student too severely in A Bad Seed, the anguish of the soldier who made a frightening and controversial decision in Grandpa Kelly Never Played Soldier; the agony of a young man over the abortion of his child in A Matter of Life or the decision of a middle-aged single woman to give hers up for adoption in Presented In Honor; the difficulty of dealing with grief in Pretendin' Dont Make It So and Cleaning Mamas Grave; the devastation of a no-win situation in Mollies Victory; and the sometimes sensitive, sometimes hilarious insecurities of childhood in Emma's Turn, Raising Up Jesus, and A Cultural Experience. The way of life depicted here has mostly disappeared. Even very isolated areas have access to satellite television and the Internet these days. In many ways, this is wonderful. Advances in medical care and psychological counseling can be shared, social skills can be honed, modern entertainment is available anywhere at the touch of a button. There are way too many advantages to list. But the homogeneous effect of this progress has diminished the richness of tradition and the eccentric charms that made rural areas so unique. Art will suffer when there is no one left to remember.

This international bestseller inspired the must-watch drama on USA Network starring Alice Braga as Teresa Mendoza. Season 2 premieres on June 8! From “master of the intellectual thriller” Arturo Pérez-Reverte, a remarkable tale, spanning decades and continents—from the dusty streets of Mexico to the sparkling waters off the coast of Morocco, to the Strait of Gibraltar and Spain—in a story encompassing sensuality and cruelty, love and betrayal, and life and death. Few authors inspire the kind of passion that Arturo Pérez-Reverte does. Reviewers, readers, and booksellers alike have embraced his fiction as the perfect blend of suspense and literary ambition. A global bestseller, he is one of the most admired and widely read authors in the world. And this stunning novel is his best yet. Teresa Mendoza's boyfriend is a drug smuggler who the narcos of Sinaloa, Mexico, call "the king of the short runway," because he can get a plane full of coke off the ground in three hundred yards. But in a ruthless business, life can be short, and Teresa even has a special cell phone that Guero gave her along with a dark warning. If that phone rings, it means he's dead, and she'd better run, because they're coming for her next. Then the call comes. In order to survive, she will have to say goodbye to the old Teresa, an innocent girl who once entrusted her life to a pinche narco smuggler. She will have to find inside herself a woman who is tough enough to inhabit a world as ugly and dangerous as that of the narcos-a woman she never before knew existed. Indeed, the woman who emerges will surprise even those who know her legend, that of the Queen of the South.

Like the legendary London Bridge, Diana Lively has been transplanted from England to the Arizona desert. Also, she seems to be falling down. Trained as an architect, top in her class, she makes dollhouses. Widowed young and beautiful, she distrusted people who were kind to her, and married Ted, the one man who wasn’t. Maybe it’s a good thing that Diana Lively’s life is suddenly out of her control. Billionaire American Wally “The Ammo King” Gold also lost a spouse young, and in memory of his beloved Anglophile wife, Wally wants to fund Arthurian Studies at Oxford—and also to bring back to Arizona an expert consultant for his King Arthur Theme Park. Ted Lively, Arthurian scholar, fond of sherry and pretty undergraduates when he can take time off from belittling his wife, most definitely does not want to go and live among the barbarians of Arizona. But Oxford, eager to please Wally, gives him no choice. So the Livelys are off to Phoenix, where Diana pictures deadly scorpions, tarantulas and snakes, and Ted bewails the loss of his children’s perfect accents. And yet, in this most unlikely place, in the most surprising ways, Diana is about to discover that the happiness she thought was lost forever can shower down on her again, can flood her dry life like a lake in the desert, and make it bloom.

It is the hot prairie summer of her twelfth year and Elsie is at a crossroads. Her beloved mother who is mentally ill has been hospitalized, and Elsie thinks that the breakdown is all her fault. Mental illness is simply not discussed in Elsie’s close-knit Mennonite community and she is rudderless. Nothing Elsie does seems to go right: there’s no pleasing her bossy older sister; she forgets to feed the cat, so her father gives it away; she’s supposed to watch out for her younger sister, but she lets her come home alone from the swimming pool (despite the lurking menace of a weird stranger around town); and she bargains with God to make her mother well again — to no evident avail. Elsie’s conversations with God, her struggle to overcome guilt, and her honest desire to prove herself are laced with a wicked wit and clarity of vision. Almost Eden is a beautiful portrait of a town, a family, and a young woman willing to challenge the things that don’t make sense to her, and to fix the things that don’t seem right.
