I Hate Writing may be the only "page-turner" textbook out there. J.M. Bohannon gives her readers invaluable writing advice, using an uplifting, modern voice tinged with humor. She takes her readers through the stages of writing a paper, giving detailed advice on how to find topics, turn ideas into words, and organize those words into coherent paragraphs with seamless transitions. She shows her readers how to revise their own work and through her "Critical Q's" teaches them to become critical readers. She also explains how to find outside sources and how to include those sources in a paper. "Too many students approach writing at the university level as a scientist approaches a volatile experiment: with protective suit, goggles, gloves, and forceps. They struggle to write without contaminating that writing with anything resembling personality. Don't let that student be you. Your unique voice should blast through your writing, letting everyone know there's a person behind your words."
THE "I HATE TO WRITE" GUIDE TO COLLEGE LEVEL ESSAYS: 4 IN 1 does not replace the required text books in English Composition courses but it does explain how to write an essay at this level without using academic words like "thesis." I never understood what that meant when I was an undergraduate, so I don't expected everyone to know what it means...but I do explain what it is in "regular" language. The four volumes grouped together here have appeared in e-book form but never as a print copy. It was probably past time to offer another option. The reason I wrote BASIC ESSAY, BOOK CRITIQUE, and RESEARCH PAPER is that they were the first essays students were required to wrote -- not just in composition class but in other courses. CHOOSING A TOPIC is something that has boggled many a mind. These are my guidelines and enough students told me that the way I detailed essay requirements finally allowed the light bulb moment of understanding the process be lit for them. Hopefully you'll find something helpful, too.

"I Hate to Write" is the compelling story of Edith Agnes McCormick an Irish immigrant, a devoted mother raising three sons in New York City in the early 1900's through WWI. Edith is an extraordinary woman of courage and fortitude. Through her "Record..".. a diary, which amazingly encompasses the period 1901 to 1919, Edith provides a compelling, extraordinarily personal glimpse into family life, but also the events occurring at the turn of the century through the cataclysmic changes of WWI. Edith's writing style is an educated one, her sense of humor with respect to family life in Manhattan with all of its challenges jumps off the pages and captures the heart and mind of the reader in a unique and captivating fashion. She opens our eyes to a time when flight was a breathtaking novelty. It was a time prior to air conditioning, when horses were dying in the sweltering heat of New York summers, when people sought summer relief in the seashore cottages of Staten Island. Edith's day to day thoughts are illuminating, as she opines upon such events as Theodore Roosevelt and the Panama Canal, the Russo-Sino War, Peary's discovery of the North Pole and the need for equal rights in the workplace and the vote for women. Edith's patriotic zeal and support for her country and its allies is compelling. Equally compelling is Edith's concern for her sons as America is drawn into the war in Europe. This Book Is Not Required: An Emotional Survival Manual for Students has been regarded as a powerful tool to introduce students to the sociological analysis and personal reflection of college life. Now in its Third Edition, the book continues to educate students on the college experience as a whole—looking at the personal, social, intellectual, and spiritual demands and opportunities presented by college life. In a personable and refreshingly straightforward style, authors Inge Bell, Bernard McGrane, and John Gunderson critically discuss how academic life distinguishes between learning the institutional rules of higher education and internalizing those rules. The book demystifies professors and teaching assistants by discussing their institutional roles and incentives and invites students to take responsibility for—and make the most of—their educational experiences.

It is rare that one can pick up a book and find all the answers to the problems of Life. Yet in this one book, we find these answers, and learn a few more things that will keep us up at night. What really happened when Mike Harris woke up after emergency surgery in a hospital still smarting from budget cuts? Why did Linda Tripp turn on Bill Clinton? How many people knew that after the Manhattan Project, the world's leading scientists gathered at Jane Russell's house to devise the strapless bra? This is a book for everyone: it's an exercise program for the not-too-ambitious senior, a step-by-step guide for the teenage lad on his first date, an advice column for the young spinster who, at the ripe old age of 22, is still trying to find a first-class man. We listen in as two American broadcasters cover the Olympic Games as only Americans can. We learn that even the big guns at the TSE were unaware of the biggest corporate takeover in history when S Claus Corp seized control of its philanthropic rival, EasterBunCo. Yet, for all its humour, the book still brings us close to tears as the author reveals the tragedy of his thirty-year love affair with Sophia Loren. If Shakespeare were alive today, he would read this book?

In Our Own Words takes the unique approach of using student writing as a resource for writing instruction and idea development. The defining characteristic of this unique high-intermediate to advanced writing text is the use of non-native student writing to teach writing. This feature makes the text easily accessible to and popular with students. The third edition features 15 new readings by student writers, five new readings by professional writers, updated writing topics, Internet activities to support the writing process, and contextualized revising and editing activities.
This book is nominally the results of an attempt to find a publisher willing to contract with the author for the printing of a thesis on the inability of Western liberal society to critique Islam without applying a politically-correct glory-to-Islam bent to opinions and observations. As the title suggests, it is far easier to find a pro-Islam book than one that even suggests that Islam needs to be placed under investigation, even after declaring a tabula rasa where opinions on it are concerned. Once the publishing problems have been identified and explained, the book continues with the results of a study the author has performed on this religion which is difficult to treat as a religion when viewed through Western eyes. The contents are a no-holds-barred record of everything attached to Islam in its early days and much of what has been proclaimed by Islamic scholars and religious pontificators in later years. This is not an Islam for Dummies sequel. It delves into all books (booklets, really) that compose the Koran. It explains what is written with the aid of behind-the-scenes information since what is written in the Koran is not always explained. When you are nothing less than the only living prophet of Allah then explanations are not required. Clearly its sole author, the prophet Muhammad, felt he was not shown the kind and amount of respect that prophets of Allah deserve as he felt a need to explain why he did not practise what he preached. Once you have finished this book and understand what Islam is all about you will be saying to yourself, “This is a religion?

Music breeds duality. We enjoy the music we love-listening to it, talking about it, reading about it. But it's just as fun to passionately revel in mocking the music we hate. Fortunately, musicians make this two-lane path very easy to follow. Half the time they're creating timeless works of art that speak to the soul; the other half, they're recording ridiculous concept albums about robots. I Love Rock 'n' Roll (Except When I Hate It) covers both sides: It celebrates the music world's flashes of genius, the creation of masterpieces, and the little-known stories...as well as the entertainingly bad ideas. Armed with a healthy dose of Brian Boone's humorous asides and lively commentary, you'll learn extremely important stuff like: ? How bands got their stupid names ? All alternative rock bands directly descend from Pixies ? The most metal facts of metal in the history of metal ? The secret lives of one-hit wonders ? The story behind "Layla," and other assorted love songs about George Harrison's wife ? What is quite possibly the worst song in rock history Boone also reveals terribly useful information like chart trivia, the rules of music, lists, and many more origins, meanings, and stories about everyone's most loved and loathed musicians.

Spotlighting a team that holds the edge in a series dating back to 1915, this pro-Georgia history proves why fans should love the Bulldogs and hate their archrivals, the Florida Gators. A pep talk from Vince Dooley is featured as is beloved mascot Uga, and the Gator Stomp that made Tim Tebow look even goofier than usual is highlighted for good measure. This entertaining chronicle argues for adoring Buck Belue while raking Rex Grossman over the coals, relating the fantastic coaching stories of the legendary W. A. Cunningham, Wally Butts, and Vince Dooley as well as up-close and personal chats with Fran Tarkenton, Herschel Walker, Boss Bailey, and more. Combining the legacy of a timeless rivalry with challenging trivia and insider knowledge, this definitive account grapples with a southern clash as broad as the GeorgiaFlorida state line."

David H. Brantley’s first serious challenge came when his doctor told him it would be a miracle if he survived another six months. Crohn’s disease was simply taking too heavy a toll on his system. Thirty years later, another doctor told him that he’d have to open him up for surgery to determine the severity of his colorectal cancer. Even though it was worse than the doctor imagined, Brantley persevered. In this inspiring account about fighting Crohn’s and cancer, Brantley looks back at the big dreams he had growing up, including becoming a successful actor and writer—and celebrates what he actually became best at—beating the odds. Through the Crohn’s and cancer, he’s kept fighting and learned that living out one’s dreams is not nearly as important as dreaming to live. Of course, he’s made the journey easier by playing some Broadway tunes in the background. If you’re struggling to overcome an obstacle that seems impossible, you’ll be inspired to keep fighting by joining Brantley as he looks back at a lifelong struggle and the lessons he’s learned in Duct Tape Won’t Stick to a Leaky Ostomy Bag.
