"Jen offers up all the gory details of a life permanently in progress. She reassures you that it's okay to not have life completely figured out, even when you reach middle age (and find your first gray pubic hair). She talks about making unusual or unpopular life decisions (such as cultivating a 'friend with benefits' or not going home for the holidays) because you don't necessarily want for yourself what everyone else seems to think you should. It's about renting when everyone says you should own, dating around when everyone thinks you should settle down, and traveling alone when everyone pities you for going to Paris without a man"--Amazon.com.

Fewer concepts in American society have received more attention recently than the need for skilled crisis intervention. Images of crises inundate internet and newspaper headlines, television screens and mobile devices. As a result of the growing amount of acute crisis events portrayed in the media that impact the lives of the general public, interest in crisis intervention, response teams, management, and stabilization has grown tremendously. Skills and methods to effectively manage acute crisis situations are in high demand. While many claim to understand the rapidly growing demand for effective crisis management, few provide clearly outlined step-by-step processes to educate and guide health and mental health professionals. This is a thorough revision of the first complete and authoritative handbook that prepares the crisis counselor for rapid assessment and timely crisis intervention in the 21st century. Expanded and fully updated, the Crisis Intervention Handbook: Assessment, Treatment, and Research, Fourth Edition focuses on crisis intervention services for persons who are victims of natural disasters, school-based and home-based violence, violent crimes, and personal or family crises. It applies a unifying model of crisis intervention, making it appropriate for front-line crisis workers-clinical psychologists, social workers, psychiatric-mental health nurses, and graduate students who need to know the latest steps and methods for intervening effectively with persons in acute crisis.

In his sizzling debut novel, Daytime Drama, Dave Benbow took readers inside the sexy, catty world of soaps. Now he goes behind the seams--and under the covers--of LA's fashion district, where a man's body is his business, and one man's exquisite face and form are about to take him straight to the top, into the arms of an unlikely lover. . .and into the crosshairs of a deranged killer. . . Male Model Designing window displays for the glamorous Cameron Fuller USA store on Rodeo Drive is Blake Jackson's passion. After all, handsome, elegant designer Cameron Fuller is an icon of chic style. With his Vogue-thin wife, Suzette, he's one-half of "America's Couple." But rumors have swirled around him for years--whispers that his wife is a vicious, drunken shrew who holds Cameron's assets in her tight fist. . .that their relationship is like one of the store's many displays: luxurious, beautiful, and completely for show. . .and that Cameron's real passion is for the men he takes discreetly to his bed. Blake has often fantasized about Cameron, but he's completely unprepared to meet him in the flesh--or to have him offer to help with a last-minute window change during a surprise visit to the store late one night. Working side by side, the two men experience an overpowering attraction, and soon, they're engaged in a whirlwind secret affair, played out on private planes, in New York penthouses, behind office doors and in a remote, exotic beach house. For Blake, life with Cameron has its drawbacks--the secrecy and sneaking around--but it's sexier and more tender than he ever could have hoped. . .and it's about to get hotter. In need of a fresh look to launch his new cologne, Cameron finds it in his lover's chiseled cheekbones, ice-blue eyes, long, dark hair and hunky, six-pack abs. It's an offer Blake can't refuse, and within weeks, he's gone from shop-boy to poster god. A billboard of Blake romping in the California surf wearing only a pair of skin-tight leather low-riders stops traffic in Times Square and Hollywood. Suddenly, he's the "it" boy, wanted and feted from coast to coast, yet having to keep his feelings for Cameron in the shadows. But someone is unhappy about Blake's sudden rise to fame, and the growing love between the designer and his model. . .someone who knows their secrets. . .someone determined to make them pay dearly. And as the days tick down until the celebrity-packed party that will launch Blake's star, it's clear that the only way Cameron and Blake can hold on to what they have is to let go of everything else. . . Riveting and compulsively entertaining, Male Model is a wickedly revealing glimpse into the rarified world of fashion--the conniving stylists and creative directors who'd step on anyone to get ahead, the insecure models who swing both ways, the temperamental diva directors, the jaded wives living on couture shows and kinky boudoir habits, the barely concealed rage and need, lust and envy, desperation and dreams they all share. . .and the secrets they'd all kill to keep under (stylish) wraps.

The Replacements

Author : Jim Walsh
ISBN : 1610605403
Genre : Music
File Size : 78.24 MB
Format : PDF, ePub
Download : 179
Read : 912

At the dawn of "Morning in America"--a period that would nurse the rise of suit-and-tie culture--there emerged a national network of anti-corporate record shops, college radio stations, fanzines, nightclubs, and entrepreneurial record labels. In the watershed year 1981, this "indie" scene fostered several seminal releases. Among recordings by bands such as Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Husker Du, The Minutemen, and R.E.M. was an album called "Sorry Ma . . . Forgot to Take Out the Trash", recorded by a scruffy, flannel-clad quartet from Minneapolis called The Replacements. Now, for the first time, all of the hearsay, half-truths, legends, and allegations associated with this maelstrom of a rock & roll band are unraveled in this oral history by longtime Twin Cities music journalist Jim Walsh. Through interviews with family, friends, and fans; former manager Peter Jesperson; Twin/Tone record label cofounder Paul Stark; and musicians around the nation influenced by the band, Walsh lays bare with painful clarity a tale that unfolds like a tragic comedy in three perfect acts. Celebrated by national publications, "the Mats" often seemed more hell-bent on sabotaging their status as critical darlings than parlaying it. With their markedly apolitical stance amid their decidedly political peers, their uncool embrace of "classic rock" influences like KISS and The Faces, and their Dionysian appetites (and the resulting tendency to literally fall on their own faces), The Replacements lasted 12 years despite themselves. From the bands founding to their rise through the local and national club circuits, their major label deal in 1985, and the slow and painful implosion that followed, The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting lays down the gripping oral history behind the little band that could--but didn't.

Melissa Kite's hilarious and honest memoir draws readers in to her exploits in not having it all in the world of leaning in—complete with dating misadventures, heroic plumbers, and clinically obese fish. Does a great weekend for you mean scrubbing all the grouting in your bathroom with a toothbrush? Do you fantasize about the handyman who in three days brought you more happiness than your useless ex-boyfriend did in three years? Do you write to-do lists that need paginating, and include items such as "re-mortgage house, get pregnant, climb Kilimanjaro"? Welcome to Melissa Kite's life and her uproarious, no-holds-barred memoir, The Art of Not Having it All, about the adventures of not having it all as a single lady in your prime. For a long time, Melissa had no idea there was anyone else out there remotely like her. Nearly every other woman she knew seemed to be valiantly juggling work and family life. By contrast, Melissa felt as though, in the fluttering mass of yellow Post-it notes on her fridge there was one that read, "Don't forget to get married and have kids," which had got covered in shopping lists, dry-cleaner receipts and trash collection schedules. If not having it all (the white picket fence, the kid, the job, the Mr. Right who helps you free your chubby angelfish who has wedged himself into a plastic log) means having just enough for you, then get ready to fall in love with your new best friend...

People say I inspire them, but I'm not sure why; I am a young girl from the hood who made it out. I don't consider myself to have all the answers. My childhood life was hell from as far back as I can remember. By the age of five years old, I had been exposed to homelessness and child molestation. I was placed in foster care and four different living situations (from one home to another), in and out of the court system, exposed to child protection agencies, missing my father who was in prison, and dealing with my mother who was in and out of jail as well as addicted to crack cocaine and men who were no good for her. As far as I can remember, this was my life before kindergarten. I have lived through life's many struggles and persevered through every storm that blew my way. I am writing this story to inspire you. As you are going through your storms, let my stories of triumph and encouragement minister to your spirit and give you the strength to fight through any given situation (molestation, rape, failure, death, legal problems, horrific home situations, problems at work, financial woes, and any given burden). I challenge you to lay them down one by one and press forward to become a stronger you. I hope that you become motivated with every scripture and quote. Do not let the statistics in society that condemn you to fail define you. It is my prayer that you can keep moving forward and see the light at the end of the tunnel. I want you to know it is not where you start but how you finish. Not everyone is equal, as we are born into circumstances beyond our control. Some of us have more advantages than others do, whether it is better homes and cars, better parents, or ideal living situations. Like a deck of cards, some of us get the ace of spades and some get the joker. Life is not an even playing field; the cards you're dealt may not be the ones you desire, but if you keep playing your hand you could still win the game. It is what you do with your situation that counts. Don't throw in your hand and quit the game. Play it to the best of your ability. Allow your struggles to make you a stronger and better you. God will not place more on you than you can bear. I would not be the woman I am today if God had not allowed me to go through the hurt and pain of my past. I overcame many obstacles and persevered to become a full-time working mother of five who earned a BA, an MA, an EdS, and a doctoral degree—all by twenty-seven years old—and I was a school administrator by thirty. People tell me that I inspire, motivate, and encourage students, teachers, administrators, and everyday people who hear my story to not give up. I am living proof that you should not give in to statistics that say you will not amount to anything because of the cards of life dealt to you. I have been in education for fifteen years. I enjoy working with alternatively educated, underprivileged, incarcerated and at-risk youth. I am qualified to give my knowledge and expertise because my life speaks for itself. I have witnessed what inspiration and motivation can do for children who have lost all hope or never once believed. This is my story: The Cards of Life. When all hope is gone, trust then believe."
