This Book was written in a funny manner to not only touch upon some old school ways but to also make us laugh, cry, and think about how some of the things we do impact kids, family, friends, neighbors, and society in general. Some stuff is made up and some stuff is just based upon what I have seen over the years. This book doesn't target any race because all races can be Ghetto. For Ghetto is not about Colors, Black, White, or Pink, but about how you act, how you live, and how you think. This book is not meant to disrespect anyone, it is just meant for laughs and to make you think so if I offend anyone please accept my apologies.

This book is about the family lives of some 10,000 children and adults who live in an all-Negro public housing project in St Louis. The Pruitt-Igoe project is only one of the many environments in which urban Negro Americans lived in the 1960s, but the character of the family life there shares much with the family life of lower-class Negroes as it has been described by other investigators in other cities and at other times, in Harlem, Chicago, New Orleans, or Washington D.C. This book is primarily concerned with private life as it is lived from day to day in a federally built and supported slum. The questions, which are treated here, have to do with the kinds of interpersonal relationships that develop in nuclear families, the socialization processes that operate in families as children grow up in a slum environment, the informal relationships of children and adolescents and adults with each other, and, finally, the world views (the existential framework) arising from the life experiences of the Pruitt-Igoeans and the ways they make use of this framework to order their experiences and make sense out of them. The lives of these persons are examined in terms of life cycles. Each child there is born into a constricted world, the world of lower class, Negro existence, and as he grows he is shaped and directed by that existence through the day-to-day experiences and relationships available to him. The crucial transition from child of a family; to progenitor of a new family begins in adolescence, and for this reason the book pays particular attention to how each new generation of parents expresses the cultural and social structural forces that formed it and continue to constrain its behavior. This book, in short, is about intimate personal life in a particular ghetto setting. It does not analyze the larger institutional, social structural, and ideological forces that provide the social, economic, and political context in which lower-class Negro life is lived. These larger macro sociological forces are treated in another volume based on research in the Pruitt-Igoe community. However, this book does draw on the large body of literature on the structural position of Negroes in American society as background for its analysis of Pruitt-Igoe private life.

Never see disparity and pretend we're blind, When we learn to have wisdom And not sacrifice good for grandeur, Don't partake in parts of foolishness Getting caught up in the mazes of life, Listening to others say, "Let your ego have its way" Knowing that would be a bitter move, Have a sense of Heaven about you Cause love is rare in this day As families part, but not pass away, When we learn to be brighter Instead of getting wrapped up in burdens of fire This is what will make our lives inspire, We must come to terms That we need a sense of concern, This will be the message When we learn

How East New York Became A Ghetto

Author : Walter Thabit
ISBN : 9780814784365
Genre : Political Science
File Size : 88.57 MB
Format : PDF, ePub, Mobi
Download : 118

In response to the riots of the mid-‘60s, Walter Thabit was hired to work with the community of East New York to develop a plan for low- and moderate-income public housing. In the years that followed, he experienced first-hand the forces that had engineered East New York’s dramatic decline and that continued to work against its successful revitalization. How East New York Became a Ghetto describes the shift of East New York from a working-class immigrant neighborhood to a largely black and Puerto Rican neighborhood and shows how the resulting racially biased policies caused the deterioration of this once flourishing area. A clear-sighted, unflinching look at one ghetto community, How East New York Became a Ghetto provides insights and observations on the histories and fates of ghettos throughout the United States.

What do you do when you are young and gifted and the world has turned its back at you? That is the wrenching question at the heart of this extraordinary novel about a seventeen-year-old street kid whose only escape is through crime -- and the redemptive power of his poetry. Ballad of a Ghetto Poet tells the savage and lyrical story of a teenager caught in the brutal cross-fire of poverty and violence that could send him on the collision course to the cellblock -- or the grave. Chicko Grayson is a teenager growing up on the tough streets of Richmond, Virginia, where powerty is a life sentence, and the only way out is behind the barrel of a gun. Raised on the harsh, brutal language of the streets, Chicko hears the music of God in the poetry he writes. But God is noticeably absent when he fals in with a sly and dangerous criminal who draws Chicko and his best friends Malcolm and Junnie into the city's violent underworld of crime. Filled with the rage and pathos of the streets, eloquent in its anquished portrait of life in the forgotten corners of the South, Ballad of a Ghetto Poet delivers a modern-day interpretation of West Side Story. This is a tragic and heroic tale of desperate hope and lost chances, and of what happens when redemption comes too late.

Ghetto Religiosity Iii

File Size : 76.64 MB

Khalil Amani has done it again! With his third installment of the Ghetto Religiosity series, Amani brings it home like fish & grits! He has done to religion what your mama does in the kitchen-Put his foot all up in it! Of great interest is Amani's critique and analysis of his former teacher, Yahweh Ben Yahweh. Amani cogently deconstructs Yahweh theology with the precision of a neurosurgeon, giving us a detailed account of Yahweh teachings, which have been exposed as plagiarisms from the Nation of Islam among others. Perhaps most controversial is Amani's scathing and blistering attack on 9/11 and our religious and secular perceptions/ideas about why this tragedy occurred. Amani takes exception to and rejects the pseudo-religiosity of 9/11. In his usual hard-core fashion, Amani puts God's business on front-street and asks the critical questions about God's whereabouts in our time of need. This book is not for the faint of heart!
