Australian Artists In The Contemporary Museum

This unique book proposes a re-reading of the relationship between artists and the contemporary museum. In Australia in particular, the museum has played a significant role in the colonial project and this has generally been considered as the predominant mode of artists' engagement with such institutions and collections. Australian Artists in the Contemporary Museum expands the post-colonial frame of reference used to interpret this work, to demonstrate the broader implications of the relationship between artists and the museum, and thus to offer an alternative way of understanding recent contemporary practices. The authors' central argument is that artists' engagement with the museum has shifted from politically motivated critique taking place in museums of fine art, towards interventions taking place in non-art museums that focus on the creation of knowledge more broadly. Such interventions assume a number of forms, including the artist acting as curator, art works that highlight the use of taxonomic modes of display and categorization, and the re-consideration of the aesthetics of collections to suggest different ways of interpreting objects and their history. Central to these interventions is the challenge to better connect the museum and its public. The book will be essential reading for scholars, professionals and students in the fields of contemporary art and museum studies, art history, and in the museum sector. These include artists, curators, museum and gallery professionals, postgraduate researchers, art historians, designers and design scholars, art and museum educators, and students of visual art, art history, and museum studies. This project has been assisted by the Australian government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

Until now, the book market has primarily dealt with the popular topic of living by the sea with publications that illustrate the location's aesthetic appeal. This book goes further to focus on the design, constructional, and technical possibilities that permit one to react to the special conditions of locations by the sea. In an introductory section, the author sets forth the principal aspects that fundamentally affect architectural design for this construction task: the geography and geology of the site, climatic conditions, and durability of materials, but also such aesthetic factors as light, landscape, and position, all of which play a special role in approaches to living by the sea. In keeping with this, the following project section, with twenty-five international examples, is organized according to the type of relationship the houses have with the sea: right by the sea, above the sea, or in the sea. The volume uses texts, detailed project information, drawings, and striking photographs to present exemplary design approaches taken by contemporary architects, including Tadao Ando, David Chipperfield, and Steven Holl.

Living The Modern

Since the nineteen-fifties, a unique form of modern architecture has been developing in Australia-a "progressive modernism," which involves the dynamic combination of tradition and transformation. This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Living the Modern_Australian Architecture, and analyzes this culture- and environment-specific architecture, using its residential constructions as a basis for examination. The scope of the book extends from detached family houses to high-rise buildings. Examples of early design from the post-war period are explored in an introductory overview, but the focus of the publication is directed towards a diverse mix of twenty-five Australian architects. For the last fifteen years, they have been applying, interpreting, or reworking modernist approaches, but despite fame in their homeland, their outstanding and refreshing productions remain largely unheard of in Europe. Including texts by Richard Blythe, Philip Drew, Philip Goad, Gevork Hartoonian, Tom Heneghan, Hannah Lewi, Elizabeth Musgrave, Stephen Neille, Claudia Perren, Kristien Ring, and Peter Wilson. Book jacket.

The thirty houses featured in this beautifully illustrated volume range from a Portuguese vacation home whose granite facade blends seamlessly into an ancient system of agricultural terraces to a Japanese family residence whose translucent walls glow like a paper lantern in the nighttime, but they all embody the same contemporary architectural trend: a radical shift in thinking about the residential architecture of the countryside. An increasing exodus from the stresses of urban living has brought a positive and powerful design consciousness out of the cities into new and challenging environments. New Country Houses explores how architects today seek to reinvent the country house and develop a new rural architecture for the twenty-first century, rather than simply remodeling or recreating the methods and manners of the past. Exercising his keen eye for architectural style, the author divides the book thematically into four chapters which correspond to contemporary architects' primary approaches to the challenge of designing for the countryside: organic, vernacular, contemporary, and experimental. The individual case studies within these chapters include insights from the architects themselves and are augmented by both detailed plans and elevations and no fewer than 175 full-color interior and exterior photographs. A full complement of supplementary features--an introduction tracing the history of the country house, a bibliography, and an index--ensures that this book will serve as a guide and inspiration to architects, their clients, and all readers who are interested in the aesthetically groundbreaking, flexible, and ecologically conscious way of living represented by today's new country houses.
