A beguiling novel of romance, adventure, and tongue-in-cheek suspense set in the South of France, from the beloved, best-selling author of A Year in Provence. Simon Shaw, a rumpled, fortyish English advertising executive, has decided to leave it all behind, and heads of to France to transform an abandoned police station in the Lubéron into a small but world-class hotel. On his side, Simon has a loyal majordomo and a French business partner who is as practical as she is ravishing. But he hasn’t counted on the malignant local journalist—or on the mauvaise types who have chosen the neighboring village as the site of their latest bank robbery. Slyly funny and overflowing with sensuous descriptions of the good life, Hotel Pastis is the literacy equivalent of a four-star restaurant.

Readers Reading And Reception Of Translated Fiction In Chinese

Translated fiction has largely been under-theorized, if not altogether ignored, in literary studies. Though widely consumed, translated novels are still considered secondary versions of foreign masterpieces. Readers, Reading and Reception of Translated Fiction in Chinese recognizes that translated novels are distinct from non-translated novels, just as they are distinct from the originals from which they are derived, but they are neither secondary nor inferior. They provide different models of reality; they are split apart by two languages, two cultures and two literary systems; and they are characterized by cultural hybridity, double voicing and multiple intertextualities. With the continued popularity of translated fiction, questions related to its reading and reception take on increasing significance. Chan draws on insights from textual and narratological studies to unravel the processes through which readers interact with translated fiction. Moving from individual readings to collective reception, he considers how lay Chinese readers, as a community, 'received' translated British fiction at specific historical moments during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Case studies discussed include translations of stream-of-consciousness novels, fantasy fiction and postmodern works. In addition to lay readers, two further kinds of reader with bilingual facility are examined: the way critics and historians approach translated fiction is investigated from structuralist and poststrcuturalist perspectives. A range of novels by well-known British authors constitute the core of the study, including novels by Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, John Fowles, Helen Fielding and J.K. Rowling.

Exposing the tensions between the imaginary and real, Duncan and Gregory and a team of leading internationa contributors focus primarily upon travelers from the 18th and 19th Centuries to pin down the imaginary within the context of imperial power. The contributors focus on travel to three main regions: Africa, South Asia, and Europe - wit the European examples being drawn from Britain, France and Greece.

What’s Covered? Get to Know Provence & the French Riviera: Famed for its Lavender Route, the honey-gold hill towns of the Luberon, and vibrant cities like Aix and Marseilles, Provence was dazzlingly abstracted in geometric daubs of paint by van Gogh and Cézanne. Still haunted by the genius of van Gogh, Arles remains fiercely Provençal and is famed for its folklore events. The spiky Alpilles mountains guard treasures like les Bauz-de-Provence: be bewitched by its ville morte (dead town) and luxurious l’Oustau de la Baumanière inn. Avignon and the Vaucluse are the heart of Provençal delights. Presided over by its medieval Palais des Papes, Avignon is an ideal gateway for exploring the nearby Roman ruins of Orange. About 10 miles east of Avignon is the Sorgue Valley, where everybody goes “flea”-ing in the famous antiques market at l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. For one day, join all those fashionable folk for whom café squatting, people watching, and boutique shopping are a way of life in Aix-en-Provence (one of France’s 10 richest towns). Enjoy the elegant 18th-century streets, then track the spirit of Cézanne at his famous studio and nearby Mont Ste-Victoire. Head south to become a Calanques castaway before diving into Marseille, one of France’s most vibrant and colorful cities. The French Riviera can supply the visitor with everything his heart desires—and his purse can stand. Home to sophisticated resorts beloved by billionaires, remote hill villages colonized by artists, Mediterranean beaches, and magnificent views, the Côte d’Azur stretches from Marseille to Menton. Thrust out like two gigantic arms, divided by the Valley of the Var at Nice, the Alpes-Maritime peaks protect the length of that favored coast from St-Tropez to the Italian frontier. Note: This ebook edition is adapted from Fodor's Provence & the French Riviera, 9th Edition but differs in some content. Additionally, the ebook edition includes photographs and maps that will appear on black-and-white devices but are optimized for devices that support full-color images.
