In Hitler Saved My Life, advertising legend Jim Riswold brilliantly combines incisive and funny essays with gorgeous and hilarious visuals to chronicle his battle with cancer and details how a post-diagnosis career transformation into a 'fake artist' helped stave off death. And that fake art, inhabited by tyrants like Mao, Hitler and Mussolini, has provoked a great deal of controversy. But as one critic noted, Riswold's work 'teaches us how to deal with monsters, be it a Hitler or a deadly disease.'

From Hitler to Trujillo is a memoir by a Holocaust survivor Alfredo Vorshirm. His gripping story embodies the Jewish European experience during and after World War II and dramatizes the events that impelled Vorshirm to the Dominican Republic at the height of the Trujillo dictatorship. Living in Belgium rather than Germany, the country of his birth, when World War II broke out, Vorshirm and his family found themselves imprisoned by the European Allies because they were Austrian-German enemies. Then he was imprisoned by the Germans when he was caught in a raid without legal identification papers and in possession of illegal foreign currency. After being held and tortured in a Gestapo jail for nearly a year, he joined the Italian partisans where he was wounded. He had become separated from his parents who went to Switzerland where they thought they would be safe. Eventually, he served with a unit of the US 82nd Airborne Division and took part in the liberation of Europe. After the war, searching for a homeland, circumstances caused him to choose residence in the Dominican Republic. Vorshirm served the Dominican Republic as a Senior Army Officer in a top post with the Technological Services of the Armed Forces, as a Representative to the UN in New York and Geneva, and as a diplomat in Belgium, until he was abruptly removed and ordered back to the Dominican Republic. This was a gravely dangerous mission, especially for a Jewish soldier who had fought against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Growing up in Poland in the 1930s, Rita Braun had many hopes and dreams for the future. When she was nine years old, however, World War II touched her once-idyllic life, transforming paradise on earth into an indescribable hell. In Fragments of my Life, Braun tells her story--from her birth in 1930 to living in Brazil today, where she works to ensure no one forgets the more than six million Jewish people who lost their lives during the Holocaust. Including many photos, Fragments of my Life provides firsthand insight into the horrors of the war. As a nine-year old on her school vacation, Braun watched as military aircraft streaked across the skies above her parents' farm. She never imagined they would leave behind much more than a trail of smoke. This memoir details what she experienced as a Jewish girl trying to stay alive during World War II. Braun describes watching the selection process and deportation of friends and family, living under both Russian and German rule, using a fake identity, surviving in a gated and guarded ghetto, escaping and hiding for her life, and witnessing the many tragedies of war. Candid and detailed, Fragments of my Life chronicles one survivor's experiences from a woman of the final generation who can say, "I lived through the Holocaust."

From Hitler To Jim Crow To Obama

Julian, online, I took note of an alarming number of thisisbyus writers posting horrendous and racist comments about a young Senator from Illinois, actively campaigning for President of the United States. Posting under the moniker “Gabby on the Gulf Coast” I promoted From Hitler to Jim Crow, a story about the displaced in Pensacola, my goal: write for the world and move forward the first-hand accounts about their struggles. I so wanted the world to care about the continued and unrelenting day-to-day plight of human beings who lost everything due to a hurricane. While some thisisbyus writers posted words revealing genuine concern and some provided positive feedback regarding the prose I chose there were countless others who took issue with the title, From Hitler to Jim Crow. Up to this point I never realized how many writers peddled their influence via virtual words attempting to set their plans of distraction in place against Senator Obama. Embracing a laissez-faire attitude has never been my style and I understood the price for the poor, the displaced, was too high for me to remain silent where these savvy writers were concerned. As these writers began using Hitler and his ideology in their comparisons to Senator Obama I found myself becoming increasingly insulted. Julian, I am proud to be an American, though naturalized, and using any analogy to Hitler enabled me to confront their criminal words as it became clear Senator Obama had a real shot at the White House. Conversely, Senator Hillary Clinton’s supporters became to a greater extent venomous with what I perceived to be their race-based objections used as diversions when they saw the handwriting on the wall Senator Obama was becoming the frontrunner in the race to the White House. As I held tight to my dream and goal to show the plight of the displaced in Pensacola I found myself washed into a political hurricane once other writers became more and more aware of the strength of my conviction that Senator Obama was the only logical choice for President of the United States of America.

Unsettled Affinities was Bendix'sfinal work. It has a unique place in his writing, as it continues the themes contained in thetwo volumes of Embattled Reason and extends them in his consideration of the idea of community. For Bendix, or affinities are personally, socially, and politically unsettled and unsettling. The work is divided into three parts: an initial, personal reflection on the author's emigrationfrom Hitler's Germany; an extended examination of the social definitions of community in Westernciviliation; and a consideration of politics, civil society, and the legitimiation of power. Inthe social and political sections, special attention is given to Germany. Using notes, letters, and lecture, John Bendix, the author's son, has provided an epilogue that gives indications ofthe direction Reinhard Bendix's thought was heading.

Early associates such as Rudolf Hess, Ernst Hanfstaengl, and Hermann Esser all claimed that Hitler revered alcoholic playwright Dietrich Eckart more than any other colleague. Eminent German historians Karl Dietrich Bracher, Werner Maser, Georg Franz-Willig, and Ernst Nolte have confirmed this assessment. Hitler not only dedicated Mein Kampf to Eckart, he hung his portrait in Munich's Brown House, placed a bust of him in the Reich Chancellery next to one of Bismarck, and named Berlin's 1936 Olympic stadium the Dietrich Ekcart Outdoor Theater. Yet British-American scholarship has virtually ignored "Nazism's Spiritual Father." J. H. Tyson weaves Eckart's biography into a colorful account of modern German history.
