Each year the average North American ingests well over two hundred pounds of animal protein. Meanwhile the global appetite for meat has increased dramatically. But feeding our meat addiction comes at tremendous cost. Maintaining our current level of consumption is ecologically impossible in the longterm and undermines our personal health and community well-being. High Steaks documents the disastrous consequences of modern large-scale industrial meat production and excessive consumption, including: *The loss of vast tracts of arable land and fresh water to intensive livestock production *Increased pollution, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, and accelerating climate change *The environmental and health impacts of too much animal fat, and of antibiotics and other chemicals in our food. Timely and compelling, this powerful book offers a modest, commonsense approach to a serious problem, suggesting strategies for all of us to cut back on our consumption of animal products and ensure that the meat we do consume is produced in a sustainable, ecologically responsible manner. At the same time, High Steaks describes progressive food policy shifts that will discourage factory farming and encourage people to eat in ways that support ecosystems and personal health. Eleanor Boyle has been teaching and writing for twenty-five years, with a focus on food systems and their social, environmental, and health consequences. As well as working with organizations aiming for better food policy, she holds an MSc in food policy and is an instructor at the Centre for Sustainability at the University of British Columbia.

Troubled times have come to the small backwater Terran Colony planet of Deanna – and having amusing names for its sun (Ramalama) and two moons (Ding and Dong) have not made this quaint little world immune to bad things – not even having a small moon famous for falling down occasionally... and bad things are indeed afoot. After the shocking assassination of a visiting member of the imperial family at a public parade, Sheriff Peggy-Ann Muller’s deputies (SODs for short) are either dead, ‘off the grid’, or just plain missing. With the local government in complete disarray, there is nothing to stand in the way of a bold, sinister plan to take over the colony – and once the fascists are in control of Deanna, the stage is set. War is coming. Meanwhile, in the offices of that mysterious and clandestine society called The Time Saving Agency, time agent extraordinaire Johnathan Scrooby ponders one of his biggest life decisions yet. To intervene... or not to intervene. And if so, how?

The Question Of The Animal And Religion

Author : Aaron S. Gross

Through an absorbing investigation into recent, high-profile scandals involving one of the largest kosher slaughterhouses in the world, located unexpectedly in Postville, Iowa, Aaron S. Gross makes a powerful case for elevating the category of the animal in the study of religion. Major theorists have almost without exception approached religion as a phenomenon that radically marks humans off from other animals, but Gross rejects this paradigm, instead matching religion more closely with the life sciences to better theorize human nature. Gross begins with a detailed account of the scandals at Agriprocessors and their significance for the American and international Jewish community. He argues that without a proper theorization of "animals and religion," we cannot fully understand religiously and ethically motivated diets and how and why the events at Agriprocessors took place. Subsequent chapters recognize the significance of animals to the study of religion in the work of Ernst Cassirer, Emile Durkheim, Mircea Eliade, Jonathan Z. Smith, and Jacques Derrida and the value of indigenous peoples' understanding of animals to the study of religion in our daily lives. Gross concludes by extending the Agribusiness scandal to the activities at slaughterhouses of all kinds, calling attention to the religiosity informing the regulation of "secular" slaughterhouses and its implications for our relationship with and self-imagination through animals.
