When gays had to be closeted, ships were the only places where homosexual men could not only be out but also camp. And on some liners to the sun and the New World, queens and butches had a ball. They sashayed and minced their way across the world's oceans. Never before has the story been told of the masses. These are the thousands of queer seafarers, mainly stewards, who sometimes even outnumbered the straight men in the catering departments of ships that were household names and the pride of the British fleet. Hello Sailor! uniquely shows what it was like to be queer at sea at a time when land meant straightness.

'At absolutely no point in Swallows and Amazons does Susan cry, 'John, look out, there's a patch of shit-eating jellyfish ahead!' Yacht racing. A world of privilege and money. Beautiful women, bronzed men, and Simon le Bon explaining that he used to be in a band. It's not like that for everyone. Somewhere much, much further down the ladder it all looks very different. As a teenager, Michael Hutchinson raced tiny plywood dinghies on Belfast Lough, amid shoals of sewage-eating jellyfish. For him, sailing became the kind of obsession that often as not ends with a psychiatric intervention. Turning pro was his only dream. Then, at the age of eighteen, driven to despair by his own unremitting mediocrity, he gave up. But he never stopped dreaming about it - what was he missing out on? How good or bad had he really been? Had it really been a wasted youth? At last, fifteen years later, he went back. Missing the Boat is the story of his comeback season, on the South Coast of England, in Ireland, and in the glamorous resorts of the Mediterranean. It's about the yachts, the people, the regattas, and just what it was like to dive back into a world that had become entirely alien.

Meet Daisy Wonderbuns, the principle actor in this sensual and sizzling, fast-paced, stand-alone book. She is a working 'girl' prowling the docks for drunken, horny sailors and longshoremen (emphasis on the 'long' if she has a say in the matter) out for the night on payday. Daisy reels in a fresh catch and gets down to business, which usually entails a lot of slobbery foreplay followed by a riotous ribbing. During the unveiling, she discovers her sailor has a uniquely shaped member, one she's never seen before. Professional that she is that hardly slows her down, but she is fascinated by the effects of the sailor's endowment, surprised she can actually discover a new sensation in her line of work.Usually Daisy keeps her no-so-little secret hidden. When she reveals her special difference, some like it. Others don't. In this case ... well, after a couple of perilous but saucy turns, Daisy finds herself back in her saloon/rooming house, calling it a night and nursing some well-deserved adult beverages. Upon returning from the bathroom she sees the most dashing sailor, an officer, standing by the bar. Her world (and other parts of her body) turns upside-down and inside-out, as she embarks on a torrid affair with the hunky seaman that'll leave you drooling and panting, satisfied to the core and wondering, 'Why can't I find a sailor like that?'Can good things last for a girl like Daisy Wonderbuns in the world she inhabits? Will her officer also have a uniquely talented tally-whacker similar to the one she encountered on the docks? Is he a man or more of a sissy-boy? Or both? The best way to find out is to pick up a copy of this highly charged and raucous romp of a rump-numbing book. The pages crackle with heat from all the action. You'll have to blow on your singed fingertips to keep reading. This can be said: When you get to the end, you'll fully understand how Daisy got her last name - Wonderbuns. You also might be tempted to lash on your own feminizing gear and stroll the docks, trawling for sailors and trying to outdo Daisy. Or you might simply head to the wharf, hoping to hear a lusty voice cry out to you, "WELL ... HELLO SAILOR!"Either way, should you choose this book you'll end your day with a smile on your face and a tingle in unmentionable places. Read it with a friend. It might stimulate some interesting ideas and spice up your evening in ways you hadn't planned. But most importantly, whatever you end up doing, whatever your personal kink is, have fun!

Gay Voices Of The Harlem Renaissance

Author : A. B. Christa Schwarz
ISBN : 0253216079
Genre : Literary Criticism
File Size : 80.73 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle

"Heretofore scholars have not been willing—perhaps, even been unable for many reasons both academic and personal—to identify much of the Harlem Renaissance work as same-sex oriented.... An important book." —Jim Elledge This groundbreaking study explores the Harlem Renaissance as a literary phenomenon fundamentally shaped by same-sex-interested men. Christa Schwarz focuses on Countée Cullen, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and Richard Bruce Nugent and explores these writers' sexually dissident or gay literary voices. The portrayals of men-loving men in these writers' works vary significantly. Schwarz locates in the poetry of Cullen, Hughes, and McKay the employment of contemporary gay code words, deriving from the Greek discourse of homosexuality and from Walt Whitman. By contrast, Nugent—the only "out" gay Harlem Renaissance artist—portrayed men-loving men without reference to racial concepts or Whitmanesque codes. Schwarz argues for contemporary readings attuned to the complex relation between race, gender, and sexual orientation in Harlem Renaissance writing.
