Love is patient and kind...1 Corinthians 13:4 West Virginia, 1869 Three years ago, Dr. Daniel Kavanagh settled down in the quaint town of Mount Laurel and established a medical practice there. The single doctor has been nursing an unrequited crush on Serena Norman, the local schoolteacher. Just down the road lies the coal mining town of Owenduffy, considered by most in Mount Laurel to be a backwoods hamlet. When the mine company's doctor abandons his post, Daniel agrees to visit one day a week, much to the consternation of his fellow residents, including his secret love, Serena. Addie Rose, the daughter of an Owenduffy coal miner, has a gift for caring for others. When a receptionist position in Daniel's office suddenly becomes available, what windows of opportunity will God open for Addie Rose—just a job, a possible career as a nurse, or maybe something more? Harp on the Willow is a touching tale of true love, the kind that can only come from a Savior who first loved us.

Working a dead-end job in a dirty and dangerous factory in central China, Drew Fralick longed for a life in which he could do something good for the world. Through a series of unlikely events he finds himself as the lone counselor on the wards of China's largest state-run psychiatric hospital, as well as thrust into the middle of an emerging comedy scene in a country where free expression is often banned. From the midst of a spiritual and emotional crisis, he confronts the demons that brought him to China in the first place. Combining all the analytical powers of stand-up comedian and counselor, he discards the narratives of his childhood to find something new.By showing how comedy can serve as a powerful method to dissect what we all take for granted, Fralick offers a unique road to explaining how he arrived at his worldview. Both laugh out loud funny and profoundly sad, I Hung My Harp on the Willow Tree tells the story of one man's disillusionment with the world and finding hope in the strangest of places.

Early American Proverbs And Proverbial Phrases

p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Ho, Hum! Another book of sermons by a retired preacher, who thinks his sermons are better than anybody elses. Well, they are. A writer of novels wrote these sermons. The author thus makes them easy to read (or listen to), filled with humor, and down to earth. They are definitely not pietistic drivel! One of them even won a national contest and was published in Best Sermons of 1988. The dedication page says that these sermons are for two kinds of people: 1. Preachers who have to prepare one or more sermons a week. Feel free to use any or all of the material in this book. 2. People who have trouble falling asleep at night. These sermons are soporific. Take one and call me in the morning.
