If I Only Knew

If I Only Knew . . . Four words to describe the premise of life! Life's twists, turns, and navigation through bumpy roads could be avoided if only we knew that . . . If I Only Knew is the story of three generations, all female, all Jewish, spanning over three continents. From the late 1800s to present-day 2012, Gigi's story will take you through an emotional journey by way of a time capsule of some sort. This autobiography covers the story of a Jewish mother (born in Slovakia, July 4, 1920), who served in the British military, and unbeknown to her, was used by the British to work as a spy. If she only knew . . . Would she have made different choices? If she only knew that escaping the Nazi regime and serving time in the military in Egypt would save her from subsequent years of oppression under the communist regime—would she have made the ill-fated decision to return to Slovakia post-World War II? If Gigi's mother only knew that the note left under her door could lead her to a bridge that was blown up minutes later, would she have followed the path her lover tried to lead her on? If Gigi's mother only knew that the decisions she made would affect Gigi's life and bring upon her abuse, incest, betrayal of love and country, would she have made the same decisions? At thirteen, Gigi made the decision to escape the newly Russian-occupied Slovakia to the country she thought would be her saving grace—Israel. Instead of a place of refuge, the Jewish state that was supposed to protect Gigi ended up being one of the biggest betrayals of her life (one of many). If Gigi only knew that getting on the plane that fateful day would lead her to experience a different kind of holocaust, a personal one, would she have gotten on that plane? If Gigi only knew that her choice in husbands would land her in an insane asylum, cause her to attempt to leave this world, contact the FBI to protect her life, use an assumed name, and ultimately, inflict so much pain on her daughter, would she have married these men? In short, Gigi believes in destiny. She believe that the travails we experience are purposeful. Gigi believes that we are exactly where we are today, because it is what is meant to be. So, despite it all, the answer to the proverbial question of if I only knew, would I? Yes, Gigi would do it exactly as she had! Mistakes, pain, and all. It is all happenstance. Part of our journey through life. It is what you do with these life lessons that matter. It is Gigi's hope that her story of survival will embolden you to take control of any part of your life you feel is out of balance, no matter if it is financial, emotional or mental.

The Making Of A Miracle

On the fortieth anniversary of the historic "Miracle on Ice," Mike Eruzione—the captain of the 1980 U.S Men’s Olympic Hockey Team, who scored the winning goal—recounts his amazing career on ice, the legendary upset against the Soviets, and winning the gold medal. It is the greatest American underdog sports story ever told: how a team of college kids and unsigned amateurs, under the tutelage of legendary coach—and legendary taskmaster—Herb Brooks, beat the elite Soviet hockey team on their way to winning the gold medal at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. No one believed the scrappy Americans had a real shot at winning. Despite being undefeated, the U.S.—the youngest team in the competition—were facing off against the four-time defending gold medalist Russians. But the Americans’ irrepressible optimism, skill, and fearless attitude helped them outplay the seasoned Soviet team and deliver their iconic win. As captain, Mike Eruzione led his team on the ice on that Friday, February 22, 1980. But beating the U.S.S.R was only one of the numerous challenges Mike has faced in his life. In this inspiring memoir, he recounts the obstacles he has overcome, from his blue-collar upbringing in Winthrop, Massachusetts, to his battle to make the Boston University squad; his challenges in the minor leagues and international tournaments to his selection to the U.S. team and their run for gold. He also talks about the aftermath of that stupendous win that inspired and united the nation at a time of crisis in its history. Eruzione has lived a hockey life full of unexpected twists and surprising turns. Al Michaels’ famous call in 1980—"do you believe in miracles? YES!"—could have been about Mike himself. Filled with vivid portraits—from his hard-working, irrepressible father to the irascible Herb Brooks to the Russian hall of famers Tretiak, Kharlamov, Makarov, and Fetisov—this lively, fascinating look back is destined to become a sports classic and is a must for hockey fans, especially those who witnessed that miraculous day.

Example in this ebook We have been entreated by a great many juvenile friends to "tell 'em all about our Engraved Preface in No. I.;" and entreaties from tender juveniles we never could resist. So, for their sakes, we enter into a little explanation concerning the great matters crowded into "our Preface." All children of a larger growth are, therefore, warned to skip this page if they please—it is not for them, who are, of course, familiar with the ways of the world—but only for the little dears who require a Guide to the great Globe they are just beginning to inhabit. Showman.—"Now then, my little masters and missis, run home to your mammas, and cry till they give you all a shilling apiece, and then bring it to me, and I'll show you all the pretty pictures." So now, my little masters and misses, have you each got your No. 1 ready? Always take care of that. Now then, please to look at the top of the circular picture which represents the world, and there you behold Her Majesty Queen Victoria on her throne, holding a court, with Prince Albert, in his field-marshal's uniform, by her side, and surrounded by ladies, nobles, and officers of state. A little to the right are the heads of the Universities, about to present an address. Above the throne you behold the noble dome of St. Paul's, on each side of which may be seen the tall masts of the British navy. Cast your eyes, my pretty dears, below the throne, and there you behold Mr. and Mrs. John Bull, and three little Bulls, with their little bull-dog; one little master is riding his papa's walking-stick, while his elder brother is flying his kite—a pastime to which a great many Bulls are much attached. Miss Bull is content to be a little lady with a leetle parasol, like her mamma. To the right of the kite you behold an armed man on horseback, one of those curious figures which, composed of goldbeater's skin, used to be sent up some years ago to astonish the natives; only they frightened 'em into fits, and are not now sent up, in consequence of being put down. And now you see "the world goes round." Turn your eyes a little to the right to the baloon and parachute, and then look down under the smoke of a steamer, and you behold a little sweep flourishing his brush on the chimney-top, and wishing perhaps that he was down below there with Jack-in-the-green. Now then, a little more to the right—where you see a merry dancing-group of our light-heeled and light-hearted neighbours, the leader of the party playing the fiddle and dancing on stilts, while one of his countrymen is flying his favourite national kite—viz., the soldier. In the same vicinity, are groups of German gentlemen, some waltzing, and some smoking meerschaums; near these are foot-soldiers and lancers supporting the kite-flyer. Now, near the horse, my little dears, you will see the mule, together with the Spanish muleteers, who, if not too tired, would like to take part in that fandango performed to the music of the light guitar. Look a little to the left, and you behold a quadrille-party, where a gentleman in black is pastorale-ing all the chalk off the floor; and now turn your eyes just above these, and you behold a joyful party of convivialists, with bottles in the ice-pail and bumpers raised, most likely to the health of our gracious Queen, or in honour of the Great Captain of the Age. And now, my little dears, turn your eyes in a straight line to the right, and you will perceive St. Peter's at Rome, beneath which are two young cardinals playing at leap-frog, not at all frightened at the grand eruption of Mount Vesuvius which is going on in the distance. From this you must take a leap on to the camel's back, from which you will obtain a view of the party sitting just below, which consists of the grand Sultan smoking desperately against Ali Pacha. The stories in this book are true. They will give you a glimpse into the lives of little children who are now grown men and women. However, before you read the stories, there is a brief history of the orphanage that I believe you will find interesting. No longer is the orphanage downtown Charlotte but moved outside the city limits to the orphanage farm on St. Peter’s Lane, Matthews, North Carolina. This is where our lake was and where the earlier children used to have so much enjoyment. Most of them in these stories mention the farm and the lake. These small children would have had little chance to grow up into strong men and women who could go out into the world and compete with the best of men had it not been for people who cared. In the cases of the people in these stories, it was Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Episcopal Church, and others that gave willingly toward the support of the orphanage. You will get a glimpse into the lives of individuals from the day they went to Thompson Orphanage until this day. Also, another purpose of this book is help the public understand orphanages. So many people feel sorry for children in orphanages. These are blessed children because they were given the chance in life that so many others needed but were not as fortunate. The ones to feel sorry for are those whose families can’t afford to care for their children and those children who are abused, neglected, and have no one to help them escape their situation.

From an acclaimed "master of suspense"(New York Times Book Review) comes a thriller in which Thorn must confront an assassin whose victims and methods are taken directly from the script of a popular TV show April Moss writes obituaries for the Miami Herald. Her son, Sawyer, also a writer, has been scripting a cable TV series called "Miami Ops" and has been using his mother's work as a central element of the show's storyline. In "Miami Ops," a serial killer is using obituaries published in the local paper as a blueprint for selecting his next victims. But midway through the season, a copycat appears off-screen, a real-life killer who is using the same strategy to select victims. When this serial killer crosses paths with the reclusive Thorn, he has no choice but to leave his sanctuary in Key Largo and join forces with a young policewoman from Oklahoma who is investigating the murders. In addition to the show's head writer, April's other son, Sawyer's twin brother, works on "Miami Ops" as the lead actor. Could one of them be involved in the killings? Or are they orchestrated by the director of the TV series, an aging mogul who badly needs a hit? And what about the female star of the show, a deliciously strange young woman who seems willing to do anything to promote her career. Thorn walks into this hotbed of entertainment business intrigue totally unprepared for the life-altering shocker he's about to face. This loner from Key Largo has brought down his share of killers, but he's never confronted one that was his own flesh and blood. With the pacing of a thriller, and the lyrical prose for which Hall is renowned, this story pits Thorn against a killer—or killers—whose motives are as elusive as their identities.
