The impetus for this book arose out of my previous book, The Evolution of Life Histories (Roff, 1992). In that book I presented a single chapter on quanti tative genetic theory. However, as the book was concerned with the evolution of life histories and traits connected to this, the presence of quantitative genetic variation was an underlying theme throughout. Much of the focus was placed on optimality theory, for it is this approach that has proven to be extremely successful in the analysis of life history variation. But quantitative genetics cannot be ig nored, because there are some questions for which optimality approaches are inappropriate; for example, although optimality modeling can address the ques tion of the maintenance of phenotypic variation, it cannot say anything about genetic variation, on which further evolution clearly depends. The present book is, thus, a natural extension of the first. I have approached the problem not from the point of view of an animal or plant breeder but from that of one interested in understanding the evolution of quantitative traits in wild populations. The subject is large with a considerable body of theory: I generally present the assumptions underlying the analysis and the results, giving the relevant references for those interested in the intervening mathematics. My interest is in what quantitative genetics tells me about evolutionary processes; therefore, I have concentrated on areas of research most relevant to field studies.

The focus of this work was the study of the genetic determination of kernel morphology and end-use quality in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Chapter 1 was a QTL analysis of milling and baking quality in a soft x hard wheat cross. Small- and large-sample milling data were analyzed with control for the effect of the Hardness gene on chromosome 5D. QTL were detected on 1A, 1B, 1A/D, 2A, 2B, 2D, 3A/B, 4B, 5B and 6B. The hard wheat parent contributed favorable alleles for soft wheat, and vice versa, indicating that hard x soft crosses have potential for quality improvement of either class. Chapter 2 reports a QTL analysis of kernel morphology in two mapping populations. An improved method of evaluation of kernel shape through digital image analysis revealed significant QTL on homoeologous groups 2, 4, 5 and 6 in both populations. The most important QTL were detected on chromosome 2D, in the population RxG, for kernel lateral dimensions, and on 5B, in the population SxO, for kernel length. In Chapter 3, a genetic model for the association between markers and genes was proposed for predicting marker-assisted selection response and potential of populations for association mapping. The application of mixed-effects models for association analysis was elaborated and the potentials and limitations of different populations for association mapping, integrated with plant breeding practice, were compared. Association mapping of kernel morphology and milling quality, on chromosomes 2D, 5A and 5B, was conducted on a panel of 95 soft winter wheat cultivars, and those results are reported in Chapter 4. The extent of LD was estimated to be less than 1 cM on chromosome 2D and approximately 5 cM in the centromeric region of 5A. Population structure was estimated with 36 unlinked markers and included in a mixed-effects model for association analysis. Correction for multiple testing was done through permutation within chromosomes. The results agreed well with the QTL analysis of Chapter 2, and alleles potentially useful for selection were identified. This study demonstrated that association mapping could enhance the usefulness of previous QTL results for marker-assisted selection.
