Introduced by Hemingway’s grandson Seán Hemingway, this newly annotated edition and literary masterpiece about an American in the Spanish Civil War features early drafts and supplementary material—including three previously uncollected short stories on war by one the greatest writers on the subject in history. In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from “the good fight,” and one of the foremost classics of war literature in history. Published in 1940, For Whom the Bell Tolls tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. Robert Jordan is a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain. In his portrayal of Jordan’s love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo’s last stand, Hemingway creates a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving, and wise. “If the function of a writer is to reveal reality,” Maxwell Perkins wrote Hemingway after reading the manuscript, “no one ever so completely performed it.” Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author’s previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time. Featuring early drafts and manuscript notes, some of Hemingway’s writings during the Spanish Civil War, and three previously collected stories of his on the subject of war, as well as a personal foreword by the author’s son Patrick Hemingway, and a new introduction by the author’s grandson Seán Hemingway, this edition of For Whom the Bell Tolls brings new life to a literary master’s epic like never before.

Martin Bell OBE has been many things – an icon of BBC war reporting, Britain’s first independent MP for 50 years, a UNICEF ambassador, and ‘the man in the white suit’ – a tireless campaigner for honesty and accountability in politics. But as For Whom the Bell Tolls reveals, he’s also a poet of light verse, and here Bell’s poems continue his war by other means on duplicitous politicians, our all-consuming media, the venality of celebrity culture and much more. The earliest poem here was written when Martin was 19; the most recent cover the riots of August 2011, the phone-hacking scandal and the ‘Arab spring’.Oscillating between trenchant satire and touching honesty with often poignant autobiography spiced with gentle humour, Bell presents poems on Tony Blair and Iraq, on Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadzic, on his hero, Reuters reporter Kurt Schork, and colourful episodes from his work and life, from the chart-topping calypso written about him in St Lucia to his being a guest at Idi Amin’s wedding:‘...that by God / Was well worth doing, if distinctly odd.’

From its original location in Swansea Castle to its present home on a patch of land still known as Cox's Farm, Swansea Prison has had a long and colourful history. In this accessible and fully illustrated book, author Peter Goodall charts the most dramatic moments in the history of the prison, retelling the stories behind the fourteen executions which took place there between 1858 and 1958. Drawing upon material from local newspapers and eyewitness accounts, this volume offers a highly readable account of this aspect of the prison's history. Beginning with the execution of two Greek sailors for a drunken murder committed while their ship was in port, and concluding with such pitiful tales as that of a local man who threw his small daughter off Swansea Pier, For Whom the Bell Tolls is a gripping read. The text is punctuated by illustrations and text boxes that include especially interesting snippets of extra information. It will appeal to an extremely wide readership among both the tourist and local market, as well as to those interested generally in popular as well as criminal history.

Journeys and encounters with other countries and people play a decisive role in the creative process of many artists. Last year we published The Sense of Movement: When Artists Travel, the first volume commemorating the BMW Art Journey--a joint initiative by BMW and Art Basel that supports artists with travel grants. That inaugural compendium featured iconic artists' journeys through art history. The second volume in the series memorializes the first journey undertaken by a recipient of this unique award. Hong Kong-based artist and composer Samson Young traced the sounds and the complex histories of bells in a two-months-long journey that took him to eleven countries on five continents. The artist's compositions, images, and texts give expression to the relationships of tensions between war and peace, solidarity and strife, and of the political dimension of sound.

The Social Policy Evaluation and Research Unit (Superu) is one of a long line of initiatives in New Zealand aimed at boosting the use of evidence in the social sector. Few of these past initiatives have survived, and indeed Superu lasted less than three years before it was given notice that it too would be disestablished. This report does not enter into the debate about social research or analyse the reasons for Superu's demise. Instead, it undertakes a high level sweep of knowledge about past social sector research initiatives in New Zealand, to identify any generic factors contributing to their success or failure and improve any future initiative's chances of success. Sections include: the position of publicly funded social research in New Zealand, alternative patterns of research organisation, why are institutions outside the core government sector more vulnerable?, patterns of social research development in the public sector, social research in individual government departments, single sector research institutions, multi-sector research institutions, key research policy reviews 1981-2010, impact of the physical science sector on social research, structural issues in social research organisations, and institutional sustainability for social research agencies.
