Trilogy is a collection of the works Garduño realized over many years of photography between Mexico and Europe. It is a magical land through which Flor Garduño glides, holding her camera. A land reminiscent of Mexico, where she was born; a land pervaded by myths and legends; a land plunged into a voluptuous and sensual nature, kissed by the sun of those exotic and ancestral places. Her great and magnificent visual production develops through a dance in three movements. The overture is Bestiarium, in which real and fictional images of enchanted animals come to life as metaphors of our dreams and passions. Then we have FantasticWomen, a celebration of the feminine universe and of the mystery and sensuality that spring from the female body. The dance ends with Silent Natures, where Garduño contemplates wilderness because, quoting the photographer herself, whenever I think of Silent natures, I must confess that I created these photographs for myself, to maintain my playful spirit throughout all these years.

"Sensual female nudes and exquisite still lifes form this collection of symbolic work by acclaimed Mexican photographer Flor Garduño. The images were taken in and around her homes in Mexico and Switzerland. Using the quiet elegance of natural light, she has created a stunning series of photographs that, beautifully reproduced here in tritone, bring a magical lyricism to black-and-white photography."--Jacket.

This volume is a unique contribution to Latin American studies because it underscores the essential role that women have played in the arenas of modern and contemporary art. [This book] provides valuable and much-needed assistance to the researcher. (From the foreword by Elizabeth Ferrer) With more than 1,500 references on nearly 800 women Latin American Women Artists, Kahlo and Look Who Else pays tribute to the rich and multifaceted artistic accomplishments of women in and from 20th-century Latin America. Frida Kahlo has until recently dominated the interest of scholars, curators, and the public to the point of almost eclipsing the achievements of other artists from the region. This selectively annotated bibliography begins systematically to identify other women -- painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, performance artists, and others -- who have made significant contributions to the history of art in the region. The first section, the main part of the work, consists of individual artists grouped in an alphabetical country arrangement. Artists in each country are listed A-Z, as are the citations about them. Annotations are descriptive and highlight, among other details, the presence of biographical and professional development information in the analyzed materials. A section of general works arranged by country follows, consisting principally of periodical and monographic literature that deals with numerous women, and a listing of the women mentioned in the cited materials. The volume has two appendices. The first is an analyzed list of 77 collective exhibitions in which works by these women have been presented. The second appendix groups the artists by country, allowing for an in-brief look at all of the artists identified in the bibliography. The name index references artists to the main section by country code and also includes entries for authors, curators, and exhibition catalogue essayists.

This unique book takes a thematic approach to twentieth century photography by focusing on the major developments of the 20-year periods into which the book is divided rather than on individual photographers. Photography 1900 to the Present presents excerpts from a cross-section of writers in the fields of photographic criticism and history on topics relevant to each period with the overview of each section providing a context for the art and culture of that era. The book also includes a timeline to exhibits, books, technical innovations, and professional organizations of each period. It also includes a bibliography of major periodicals dealing with 20th century photography. This enables readers to access current information on contemporary photographers. A valuable reference book for any reader interested in the evolution of 20th century art and photography and its impact on society.

Literary Nonfiction. Memoir. WHO WAS COUSIN ALICE? AND OTHER QUESTIONS attempts to answer both the first question posed in the title about American poet John Matthias's early family memories, and then to raise and engage, in a series of memoirs and critical essays, a large number of "other questions." These range from an attempt to find some answers about his wife's British family in "Kedging in 'Kedging in Time,'" an essay-memoir first published as an afterword to his long poem "Kedging," about the Adams and Young families during and after World War I, to memoirs inquiring into "Poetry and Insomnia," "Poetry and Murder," and the literary imaginations of "Grand Old Dirty Old Men"—Yasunari Kawabata, Gabriel García Márquez, and Octavio Paz, among others—an examination of erotic writing of the old and aging as a manifestation of "late style." Specifically literary essays include considerations of W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, Roy Fisher, Paul Muldoon, John Berryman, Robert Hass, Robert Pinsky, Michael Anania, and "British Poetry at Y2K." In this hybrid mix of genres—both very recent work and a selection of pieces culled from the last twenty-five years—Matthias has added a number of poems that enter into a dialogue with his essays and memoirs. Guy Davenport has said that Matthias's prose "is written in a congenial and civilized style," and that while he "writes for a general audience that reads," his work, taken together, constitutes "a critical tour de force."
