When people find themselves displaced, what do they do to re-create, their homes? And what does home mean to them? The lives in this book span a wealth of definitions. Finding Home: How Americans Prevail is about people who have become dislodged from their center, the place they call home, and about how they have righted themselves. Everyday Americans elaborate on how they have solved problems our society hands us on a daily basis. Included are the voices of vets and foster kids, single moms and laid-off workers, retirees and small business owners. These people are doing more than just coping. They are innovators in their own lives. They are prevailing.

Finding A Home For The Soul

Finding a Home for the Soul is a collection of interviews with people who have searched for greater meaning in life and have discovered Judaism's carefully wrought understanding and nurturing of the human spirit, manifested in ritual, prayer, and values. Catherine Hall Myrowitz introduces the reader to forty-two people who have graciously and courageously shared the motivation and experiences that ultimately led to their conversion to Judaism. There are no "leaps of faith" in these profiles: each convert became Jewish gradually. Some describe a connection to those who perished in the Holocaust; others felt a second soul coming into them during the mileveh. Some believe that becoming Jewish was preordained, and there are those who arrived at Judaism through their ongoing relationship and communication with God. Many of the interviews in this volume include dramatic shifts in people's lives as they strive to attain greater Jewish expression and deeper appreciation of their souls' quest. Some of these "Jews by Choice" have become traditionally observant, and some are now less observant while remaining strongly identified as Jews and connected to their communities. Some converts agonized about leaving their former faith, and many were surprised to find the Jewish origin of the rituals they had abandoned. It is the author's hope that those who are seeking to become Jewish will find support for their quest in one or more of these interviews; that non-Jewish families can read these profiles and better understand what it may mean for one of their members to choose Judaism; that the larger Jewish community will enjoy these affirmations of the blessing of leading a Jewish life and understand andvalue more fully those who come to Judaism; and that anyone who reads this book will have a deeper comprehension and appreciation of Judaism as seen through the eyes of those who have chosen it. The interviews in this inspiring volume will give the reader a feeling for the energy and love that people bring to Judaism and the varying yet deep satisfaction they take from it.

Terra Llantera: Placemaking and Finding Home in the Borderlands, with Photos by Vivian Grimes is a work of collaboration through and through. It is a narrative nonfiction, photo essay, and collection of research. Through these various lenses, the hidden world of Tijuana's trash and tire-based construction is revealed in stunning fashion.A fascinating cycle of use, disposal, and reuse of tires and trash plays out in massive scale along the border between the United States and Mexico. In the city of Tijuana, impermanent communities often adopt materials that have been cast off by people and re-purpose them to build houses, parks, and a stable life for themselves. The alternative is something akin to an ecological disaster waiting to happen. The social implications of this unique ecological and economic dynamic are far from obvious, and are not trivial.

Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, managed to rise above his harrowing childhood, which included living in Compton, a suburb of Los Angeles. In this deeply personal memoir, he relives horrors no child should endure. A bloodcurdling neighborhood murder merely serves as the backdrop to the abuse and alcoholism within the four walls of his own home, a cycle broken only by the cancer that left him motherless. Orphaned at an early age, Jim saw firsthand the worst this world had to offer. He somehow managed to catch enough glimpses of grace that he knew he wanted more, both from himself and from a God he had to believe existed. And from that small spark of grace, a great man emerged.

I always wanted to know where I came from, who my ancestors were, what they were like, and what they did. I'm interested in knowing how they survived their particular set of circumstances. Our real life drama, comedies, tragedies, and sex stories are anything but boring, and therefore worth recording.

An Appraisal Of The Status Of Chagas Disease In The United States

This title critically reviews old and new literature, help to create greater awareness of the disease in the US and helps in the evaluation of certain epidemiological and public health issues. During the first half of the 20th century, Chagas disease was assumed to be absent from the U.S. and considered an exotic disease, until the first two indigenous cases were discovered, almost simultaneously, in Texas, 1955. Since that time four indigenous cases have been documented in several places in the country. Although the disease is still considered uncommon in the US, this disease is not longer an exclusive Latin American illness. Physicians in the US are often unaware of the characteristics of the diseases, and are likely overlooking locally acquired cases. The influx of an estimated 300,000 Latin American immigrants with the Chagas parasite means that there is an urgent need for physicians and public health officials to become aware. Helps to create greater awareness of Chagas disease in the USA Helps to evaluate epidemiological and public health issues Facilitates accurate and necessary future public health interventions

It's April 1969, and fourteen-year-old Yolanda Sahagún can hardly wait to see her favorite brother, Chuy, newly returned from Vietnam. But when he arrives at the Welcome Home party the family has prepared in his honor it's clear that the war has changed him. The transformation of Chuy is only one of the challenges that Yolanda and the rest of her family face. This powerful coming-of-age novel, winner of the 1999 Chicano/Latino Literary Contest, is a touching and funny account of a summer that is still remembered as a crossroads in American life. Yolanda and her brothers and sisters learn how to be men and women and how to be Americans as well as Mexican Americans. "A captivating portrayal . . . .the novel is challenging, warm, provocative, often humorous, always engaging."--Rudolfo Anaya "Patricia Santana's Motorcycle Ride on the Sea of Tranquillity will take you on an exhilarating journey through the tortured landscape of the late 1960s, and show you how the stench of a brutal foreign war and revolutionary winds at home swept into the lives on one Mexican American family in Southern California. . . . Santana takes her place among those new Chicana writers who are refashioning the face of American literature for the twenty-first century."--Jorge Mariscal, University of California, San Diego, author of Aztlan and Viet Nam: Chicano and Chicana Experiences of the War

Why am I writing my memoirs? Several months ago, my Grandson, Steven, said: Papa, you should write all the stories that you have been telling us all these years. Some day you will not be around to tell those wonderful stories anymore. If I had a booklet or some kind of way to tell the stories to my children or hopefully, my grand children, I would be a happy man. So as a result, I decided to write this book. Normally, people do not look to write a novel at the age of 78. however; I have decided to give it a try. I am a normal man of 78 years of age, in my retirement years and love life. I adore God, love my family and friends and Honor my Country, America. I guess I should start by letting you know something about me and my family. I am married to my wife, Roseanne, for 53 years and 5 months. Life with Roseanne has been wonderful. We have three children, Graceanne, 51, Steven, 48 and Anthony, 45. Graceanne is married to my son-in-law, Christopher, Steven is married to my daughter-in law, Jennifer and Anthony is married to my daughter-in-law, Theresa. We have 13 grand children and one great grand daughter. The children are Melanie,36, Rachel,34, Steven,26, Nicholas,24, Courtney, 20, Nichole,20, Christopher,17, Melina,13, Samantha,10, Michael,9, Mackenzy,8, Allyson,4, Isabella 1, and Zoe Emma,1. Thank God, they are all in good health and Beautiful and Handsome individuals.
