Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.

The special issue on Energetic Materials and Processes brings together scientists from many countries working in universities, research institutes, government laboratories and private industry to discuss state-of-the-art research on new materials and processes for different applications. The main topics of the issue include synthesis of new materials, performance, advanced diagnostics, experimental techniques, theoretical approaches, and computational models for simulating the behaviour of energetic materials under a wide variety of conditions. The issue is a platform for presenting cutting edge fundamental research in chemistry and physics of materials and processes associated with fast chemical processes, frontal high energy reactions, supersonic reactions, ageing, thermal decomposition and mechanical damage of energetics, as well as utilisation and safety of energetic materials, new materials for anti-terroristic activity, new materials for space transportation systems, new technologies of energetic materials in medicine, forensic, mining and civil engineering

The advent of nanomaterials has introduced a new dimension in applications of energetic and reactive materials. A fundamental understanding of their synthesis mechanisms, atomic- and molecular-scale structural characteristics, and an evaluation of properties combined with modeling of the limits to those properties are required to realize the full potential of energetic and reactive nanomaterials. Many techniques have been recently developed that make it possible to exploit the benefits of the "nano" structure and design materials with desired energy release rates and energy densities, while they also improve their safety, reliability and load-bearing capability. Advances in modeling and characterization have made it possible to determine mechanisms controlling the thermal, chemical and mechanical behavior of nanomaterials. This volume brings together researchers from around the world to assess fundamental studies on synthesis, characterization of structure, and evaluation of properties of energetic/reactive nanomaterials. Applications such as new propellant formulations, underwater detonation developments, biomedical research, and combustion of nanolayered metal films for cladding materials are featured. Topics include: applications and toxicology; synthesis; characterization; characterization and theory; theory and modeling; and general discussion.

This volume selects over sixty papers presented at this symposium, and provides an excellent introduction to the state-of-the-art technology in non-intrusive combustion diagnostics for propulsion systems. As such, it is invaluable for researchers wishing to adopt the methods directly, to those interested in assessing the accuracy, advantages, and limitations of specific techniques, and to those seeking a starting point for new ideas toward advances in combustion diagnostics. Topics range from LIF and PLIF techniques to diagnostics of particles, gaseous reaction systems, and solid propellants. Also covered are diagnostics in practical combustion systems.

With new and growing interest in dealing with the hazards of reactive chemicals, this book offers guidelines that can significantly reduce the risk or mitigate the severity of accidents associated with storing and handling reactive materials. Necessary elements of a reliable system to prevent equipment or human failures that might lead to a reactive chemical incident are sound and responsible management policies, together with a combination of superior siting, design, fabrication, erection, inspection, monitoring, maintenance, operations and maintenance of facilities. These Guidelines deal with all of these elements with emphasis on design considerations.
