What is a family? Who is a family? Either a lot or a few is a family; But whether there's ten or there's two in your family, All of your family plus you is a family! There is something for everyone in this celebration of families - poems about families of all sizes and configurations, about brothers and sisters, adoptees and stepsiblings, parents and grandparents, even a special ode to the only child. Both poems and Hafner's warm expressive illustrations convey the sense of what makes family life at once so wonderful and so unpredictable. Told from a child's point of view, the poems are perfect for reading alone or in the classroom and for family story times as well.

This Family themed anthology of poems is written by various authors. The anthologies in this series are updated and revised versions of previously published titles, each with several brand new poems in them. There's an anthology for every place and topic. Make sure you've always got a verse rehearsed! Roaring dinosaur rhymes, silly school rhymes: even some revolting rhymes to get you groaning. You can rap or rhyme them, mime them out or tackle fiendish tongue-twisters. Heaps of rib-tickling rhymes to send you poetry potty, and it all supports the school curriculum. A matching Teacher Resource Book, written by Paul Cookson, features workshop-style lessons based on different poetry types/genres. Each lesson focuses on a specific poem from one of the anthologies.

In this, my first published book, I have taken some eighty-six poems from more than three hundred I have written over nearly fifty years. Some express a simple faith in God the Father, some give praises to Jesus, some focus on biblical events and people, and some are what I call the opposite of the parables of Jesus. Instead of comparing an earthly situation with a heavenly situation, as Jesus did, I contrast the two. Some good examples are “Scars,” “God Will Never Leave Us,” and “You Can Count on Me.” Finally, I have included poems about family relationships, including mothers, fathers, and daughters. If you are a Christian, I hope this book will bless you; if you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, it is my prayer that God will use this book to show you one simple truth that Jesus loves you.

"This book is a memoir in poetry about family stories, mother-daughter relationships, women’s work, mothering, writing, family secrets, and patterns of communication in close relationships. Faulkner knits connections between a DIY (do-it-yourself) value, economics, and family culture through the use of poems and images, which present four generations of women in her family and trouble “women’s work” of mothering, cooking and crafting. Family stories anchor family culture and provide insight into relational and family life. This work may be used as a teaching tool to get us to think about the stories that we tell and don’t tell in families and the importance of how family is created, maintained, and altered in our stories. The poetry voices the themes of economic and collective family self-reliance and speaks to cultural discourses of feminist resistance and resilience, relational and personal identities. This book can be read for pleasure as a collection of poetry or used as a springboard for reflection and discussion in courses such as family communication, sociology of gender and the family, psychology of women, relational communication, and women’s studies. “Sandra’s innovative arts-based social science text demystifies poetic inquiry, providing readers both an embodied example of excellence and detailed exercises for use when practicing one’s own craft.” – Elizabeth A. Suter, University of Denver “Through this book, Faulkner presents a refreshing way of understanding, researching, and teaching about the communication in families.” – Pamela J. Lannutti, La Salle University “Faulkner takes readers into the personal lives of four generations of mothers and daughters, poetically uncovering concrete aspects of social processes of family, motherhood, relationships, and writing. A fusion of social science and art that invites engagement of all your senses to understand the felt truth of lived experience.” – Carolyn Ellis, University of South Florida “Captivating, nuanced, and often surprising, Faulkner’s work is a vital contribution that bridges the chasm between traditional interpersonal communication research and brave new artistic worlds for relationship studies.” Jimmie Manning, Northern Illinois University Social Fictions Series International Editorial Advisory Board Carl Bagley, University of Durham, UK Anna Banks, University of Idaho, USA Carolyn Ellis, University of South Florida, USA Rita Irwin, University of British Columbia, Canada J. Family Matters and Other Complications dramatizes the processes involved with immigration. Creating a trans-national identity and the emotional upheavals that occur with such a major change are at the center of this book about men and women at various stages in life as they try to feel at home in a foreign environment. The assorted stories and poems are woven around characters struggling with identity issues, and the subtle undercurrents make these complex family relationships come alive. Spanning across several generations and locales, this is a universal dilemma. Historical borders are no longer valid and geographical boundaries have lost their meaning, unable to confine us to where we were born, as the world grows a bit smaller every day. Beginning in the late 1960s, the book covers a period of 50 years, traveling from the Himalayan Mountains to communities in America. About the Author: Author Latika Mangrulkar grew up in India as an army brat, living all over the subcontinent before coming to the United States at the age of 22. She was the first South Asian woman grad student at her Midwestern university. She is a social worker/therapist and an educator, and lives in the San Francisco area. Publisher's website: http: //

A poetry collection introducing animal architects that build remarkable structures in order to attract a mate and have babies. Many animals build something--a nest, tunnel, or web--in order to pair up, lay eggs, give birth, and otherwise perpetuate their species. Organized based on where creatures live--underground, in the water, on land, or in the air--twelve poems bring fish, insects, reptiles, mammals, and birds to life. Back matter includes more information about each animal. "A fine synthesis of poetry and science" — Kirkus Reviews "An inviting introduction to a dozen industrious creatures" — Publishers Weekly "A natural for classroom use, with eye-catching art that will lure little ones in" — Booklist ILA Teachers' Choices
