Practical Embedded Robotics provides an accurate, concise and clear route through the design, operation and use of microcontrollers for robotic applications. It is divided into three main sections: the microcontroller core and its internal modules; the peripherals - sensors, actuators and devices; and the analysis of robots as a whole system, which presents examples of robotic platforms depending on their applications, logic diagrams and control systems. Each chapter of the book provides brief theoretical aspects and practical tried & tested hands-on examples of hardware and software, beginning with simple functions and ending with complex applications such as implementing communication protocols, controlling display controllers, or using navigation units such as accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS. Common hardware devices are also presented, with schematics used to connect them to a microcontroller. The applications are built around Microchip's new enhanced 8-bit family of microcontrollers, which provides computing power and peripheral diversity while keeping programming complexity low. With this book, you will be able to: • learn the general structure of a MCU-based application with examples from robotics • read and understand any microcontroller datasheet • program any 8-bit PIC microcontroller using any embedded C language and its registers • measure responses from analog sensors • create your own embedded functions • communicate with any peripherals (sensors, motors, communication devices, displays) using all wired or wireless standards (RS232, RS422, RS485, SPI, I2C, 1-wire, PS/2, IrDA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or ZigBee) • understand the full range of batteries and their characteristics • design your own robot power supply using batteries and linear or switching regulators • control any type of DC motor (RC servo, brushed or brushless DC, or steppers) • choose the appropriate rover or tracked drive train for your robotic platform • design your own custom logic diagram for your robot. An excellent resource for advanced students, professional developers and robotics hobbyists with an interest in building robotics applications • Accompanying compact, powerful development kit enables you to get up and running quickly, designing and building your own devices • Companion website provides numerous detailed code examples and schematics

Annotation Embedded vision systems such as smart cameras have been rapidly developed recently. Vision systems have become smaller and lighter, but their performance has improved. The algorithms in embedded vision systems have their specifications limited by frequency of CPU, memory size, and architecture. The goal of this e-book is to provide a an advanced reference work for engineers, researchers and scholars in the field of robotics, machine vision, and automation and to facilitate the exchange of their ideas, experiences and views on embedded vision system models. The effectiveness for all methods is emphasized in a practical sense for systems presented in this e-book.

Embedded Systems & Robots: Projects Using The 8051 Microcontrolleris meant to serve as a reference book on real-time embedded system design and the applications of the 8051 microcontroller for undergraduate as well as postgraduate students of computer science, information technology, electronics, instrumentation, mechatronics, and other related disciplines. The book will also prove useful to general readers who wish to understand and fabricate simple working models of robots. This book adopts a do-it-yourself approach, starting with very simple projects and slowly leading to more complex items. It includes discussions on real-time embedded systems and provides step-by-step instructions for design and construction of different types of simple robots. The book highlights the need for accurate scheduling in real-time systems and indicates the related solution-techniques through assembly language programming. It contains discussions on importance of data structures in real-time scheduling (Chapter 7) and interfacing issues of sensors such as SONAR, infrared, LDR, and tactile sensors. The book provides complete fabrication blue-prints of several robot examples, including line-follower robot, maze-solving robot, obstruction-detecting robot, shadow-activated robot, learning robot, and humanoid robot. The book uses simple and lucid language for easy understanding of the concepts involved. A large number of illustrations (in colour where required) have been incorporated to enhance understanding of relevant technical details. All circuits shown in the book have been tested. Review exercises, including objective-type questions have been provided at the end of every chapter to test the studentsa understanding of the topics discussed.

This book is one of four books that teach the fundamentals of embedded systems as applied to the Texas Instruments MSP432 microcontroller. An embedded system is a system that performs a specific task and has a computer embedded inside. A system is comprised of components and interfaces connected together for a common purpose. This book teaches the fundamentals of microcontroller interfacing and real-time programming in the context of robotics. There is a chapter on assembly language to expose important concepts of the microcontroller architecture. However, most of the software development occurs in C. This book can be used with Texas Instruments Robot Systems Learning Kit (TI-RSLK). This book provides an introduction to robots that could be used at the college level with little or no prerequisites. Specific topics include microcontrollers, fixed-point numbers, the design of software in C, elementary data structures, programming input/output including interrupts, analog to digital conversion, digital to analog conversion, power, sensor interfacing, motor interfacing, an introduction to digital signal processing, control systems, and communication systems. The book shows how you deploy both Bluetooth Low Energy, and wifi onto the robot, creating an internet of things. This book employs a bottom-up approach to learning. It will not include an exhaustive recapitulation of the information in data sheets. First, it begins with basic fundamentals, which allows the reader to solve new problems with new technology. Second, the book presents many detailed design examples. These examples illustrate the process of design. There are multiple structural components that assist learning. Checkpoints, with answers in the back, are short easy to answer questions providing immediate feedback while reading. The book includes an index and a glossary so that information can be searched. The most important learning experiences in a class like this are of course the laboratories. Specifically for this volume, look at the lab assignments for TI-RSLK curriculum.
