Now in paperback, with a new foreword by Fred Krupp, an expert's illuminating preview of the cleaner, lighter, smarter cars of the future. In Driving the Future, Margo T. Oge portrays a future where clean, intelligent vehicles with lighter frames and alternative power trains will produce zero emissions and run at 100+ mpg. With electronic architectures more like those of airplanes, cars will be smarter and safer, will park themselves, and will network with other vehicles on the road to drive themselves. As the director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Oge was the chief architect behind the Obama administration’s landmark 2012 deal with automakers in the US market to double the fuel efficiency of their fleets and to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2025. This was America’s first formal climate action using regulation to reduce emissions through innovation in car design. Offering an insider account of the partnership between federal agencies, California, environmental groups, and car manufacturers that led to the historic deal, Margo discusses the science of climate change, the politics of addressing it, and the lessons learned for policy makers. She also takes the reader through the convergence of macro trends that will drive this innovation over the next forty years and be every bit as transformative as those wrought by Karl Benz and Henry Ford. Driving the Future is for anyone who wants to know what car they’ll be driving in ten, twenty, or thirty years—and for everyone concerned about air quality and climate change now.

The influence of technology on society is fundamental in its overall makeup and creation that it is almost impossible to imagine the world without it. Technological developments have certainly shaped opportunities and advantages for various people. Considering a life without technology would be a challenging thought for many people because technology perpetually influences and changes lives. Specifically, in the field of mobility, technological progress and digitalization lead to new possibilities. Mobility can be rethought, and new forms of mobility and business models can emerge. Building up knowledge about the acceptance factors on which these new forms of mobility depend from the user’s point of view may contribute to enabling their (future) introduction and establishment. This cumulative thesis aims to contribute to research on the topic of acceptance concerning autonomous shared mobility services and to provide important and useful stimuli for application in businesses.

This book has been generated by the EC-funded Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe DRIVE collaborative research programme. it brings together work on driver behaviour, traffic safety, and human- machine interfacing to review the state of the art in Europe in terms of systems specification, design, evaluation, and implementation for near- future vehicles.; Changes in vehicle functionality will be fundamental through the 1990's, and this book demonstrates that a purely technology driven approach is a recipe for disaster; integrated and co-ordinated multidisciplinary initiatives in complex system design are preferable and are more likely to deliver system efficiency, acceptability, and safety.; It is aimed at transport ergonomists, vehicle designers, HCI researchers, applied psychologists and cognitive ergonomists.

Background. A significant gap exists in the United States between ambitious regulatory goals requiring firms to introduce hybrid and electric vehicles, and consumer adoption of these technologies to date. However, the interventions required to close this gap are not obvious due to the complex feedbacks and time delays that govern alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) diffusion. Purpose. The purpose of this article is to introduce Driving the Future (DtF), a free, web-based management flight simulator to explore the effects of automaker strategies and public policies on the US automotive market. Method. We develop a behavioral, dynamic model portraying multiple automobile and fuel types, fueling infrastructure, and consumer choices, enabling users to rapidly experiment with how a wide array of decisions and assumptions shape the dynamics of AFV diffusion out to 2050. Results. We describe how the simulator can be used to explore various scenarios for AFV adoption, and discuss how the simulator can help improve mental models and decision-making. We present evidence from classroom and online experiments, demonstrating that the simulation is both effective in developing users’ understanding of AFV diffusion dynamics, and enjoyable to use.

Driving The State

In her absorbing ethnography of the everyday practice of public policy, Dolores M. Byrnes focuses on Mi Comunidad, a job-creation program founded in 1996 by Vicente Fox when he was governor of Guanajuato. This program was intended to reduce migration and became an important source of empowerment for small businesses in rural Mexico. A significant aspect of the program is the way it encourages former residents who have successfully migrated to the United States to invest in the maquilas back home. Byrnes's close look at policy implementation reveals changing relationships between families and the state.Working as a volunteer in Mi Comunidad, Byrnes attempted to understand how the program worked. As she traveled from site to site with the two female state employees who implemented the program's policies, she saw that program practices reproduced middle-class values rather than female solidarity. In spite of this, she argues for the potential of female professional power, with implications for democracy and social justice. Perhaps most interesting of all, Byrnes portrays the formation of nonborder maquilas in rich detail and shows how government employees at the local level personally engage in "driving the state."

Out of all the human senses, touch is the one that is most often unappreciated, and undervalued. Yet, the surface of the human body, the skin, is actually one huge sheet of tactile receptors. It provides us with the means to connect with our surroundings. Despite the important role that vision plays in our everyday lives, it is the skin that constitutes both the oldest, and by far the largest of our sense organs. The skin protects our body from the external world and, at the same time, informs us about what occurs on its surface. In Touch With The Future explores the science of touch, bringing together the latest findings from cognitive neuroscience about the processing of tactile information in humans. The book provides a comprehensive overview of scientific knowledge regarding themes such as tactile memory, tactile awareness (consciousness), tactile attention, the role of touch in interpersonal and sexual interactions, and the neurological substrates of touch. It highlights the many ways in which our growing understanding of the world of touch can, and in some cases already are, being applied in the real world in everything from the development of virtual reality (VR) environments, tablet PCs, mobile phones, and even teledildonics - the ultimate frontier in terms of adult entertainment. In addition, the book shows how the cognitive neuroscience approach to the study of touch can be applied to help improve the design of many real-world applications/products as well as to many of our everyday experiences, such as those related to the appreciation of food, marketing, packaging design, the development of enhanced sensory substitution systems, art, and man-machine interfaces. Crucially, the authors makes a convincing argument for the view that one cannot really understand touch, especially not in a real-world context, without placing it in a multisensory context. That is, the senses interact to influence tactile perception in everything - from changing the feel of a surface or product by changing the sound it makes or the fragrance it has. For students and researchers in the brain sciences, this book presents a valuable and fascinating exploration into one of our least understood senses

In May 2007, an extraordinary meeting took place in London's The Exchange Forum. Chief executives from many of the world's most important financial exchanges came together with senior executives from a wide array of global banking, trading, and investing firms, index providers, regulators, system suppliers, and key academics to discuss the rapidly changing business and technological environment in which exchanges function. The forum was an exclusive event, open only to the most senior-level individuals in the global exchanges community: those who run exchanges, who are clients of exchanges, who invest in exchanges, and who supply goods and services to exchanges. In presentations and panel discussions over two days, these experts explored the effect of shrinking margins as more instruments became exchange traded rather than OTC and the conflicts that creates. They shared what exchanges are doing today to respond to the challenges wrought by competition, globalization, and rapid technology advances. And they looked into the future and discussed the multi-asset, multi-currency, and multi-region trading that holds out the promise of future success. The book is based on the discussion and analysis that took place at this exclusive event that brought together leading exchange professionals, their customers, and suppliers from around the globe to share insights and experiences. The Future Of Air Transport

This White Paper sets out a strategic policy framework for the development of airport capacity in the UK over the next 30 years. Chapters focus on the following: the strategic framework; the environmental impacts; the air transport sector. It also looks at individual regions and the impact for them, including: Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, also the North of England, the Midlands, the South West and finally the South East. The framework itself can be used by public bodies, air operators and airlines for future planning applications. It also sets out the Government and devolved administrations' conclusions on the case for future airport expansion, taking into account the large consultation exercise of over half million respondents. This paper provides reasons why airport capacity should be expanded, but recommends a balanced approach to the issue. Among the reasons are: the economic importance of air travel for the country’s economy and the increased desire amongst the population for foreign travel, which should be balanced against minimizing, where possible the environmental effects to an area where airports are situated. These are some of the main cases for future development following a full environmental assessment: for Scotland: an additional runway at Edinburgh Airport; substantial terminal development at Glasgow Airport. For Wales: further terminal development needed at Cardiff airport. For Northern Ireland: development of increased capacity at Belfast. For the North of England: additional terminal capacity provided at Manchester Airport and development of increased capacity at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. For the Midlands: additional runway for Birmingham. For South West England: expansion of Bristol Airport. For South East England: a new runway at Stansted; further development of Heathrow supported, including a further runway and additional terminal capacity. Some options though are not to be followed through, including: two new runways at Gatwick, a development of a second runway at Luton, and a new airport at Cliffe, a new airport of central Scotland, and a new airport at Rugby.
