This is a collection of twelve short stories. The stories speak of the life of ordinary people, their emotions, their fears and expectations from life. The stories are all based in India, reflecting the Indian way of life right from the quaint hill station of Kurseong to the colonial lifestyle of Assam. While “The Sari” describes the love and passion felt by a maid, wrapped in the hand-me-down sari of her mistress, “Making of a Memsaab” talks about the metamorphosis of a middle class Bengali girl into a snooty tea estate “memsaab”. “Lavender Memories” tells the poignant tale of a schoolboy’s crush on his teacher and “Mrs. Robinson” describes the unusual life of a poor uneducated “coolie” girl from the tea community who becomes the mistress and later the wife of a British tea plantar. “Turn of the Tide” deals with the emotional dilemma faced by a son whose father is in a coma. The protagonist in each of the twelve stories faces a unique situation in life. There is a twist at the end of each story, each story ending on an unexpected note. This collection of short stories can best be described as a roller coaster of myriad emotions.

The Magatama Doodle

ISBN : UOM:39015060890442
Genre : Biography & Autobiography
File Size : 74.48 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 241
Read : 177

Part personal memoir, part professional flashback, part socio-cultural commentary, The Magatama Doodle chronicles the author’s experiences during his twenty-four years (1950-74) of living in Japan as a ‘reluctant banker’. The book comments extensively on the country’s social, economic, political and cultural realities during the crucial early years of post-war reconstruction and recovery. Rich in anecdotal material – often enough highly amusing – the book also delves beneath the personal story in search of the bigger picture. Neither an apologist, nor a Japan-basher, the author approaches Japan’s complexities with informed respect and due care and attention, but also with well-targeted criticisms. Finally, in an Epilogue, the author touches on some of the significant changes that have taken place in Japanese society since the mid-Seventies; he also addresses his current concern – widely shared – about the sustainability of Japan’s prosperity without implementing important structural changes in existing political and social systems.

Format : PDF, Kindle

Attachment is a word used to describe a simple idea – the relationship with someone you love or whose opinions are important to you – so why is so much of the language relating to attachment so obscure, and why is it so challenging to help children who lack healthy attachment bonds? Attachment in Common Sense and Doodles aims to bring some clarity and simplicity to the subject. Providing grounded information and advice accompanied by a series of simple 'doodles' throughout, it explains attachment in language that is easy to understand and describes how to apply this information in everyday life. It describes how the attachment patterns in children who are adopted or fostered differ, summarises the latest research in the field and provides advice on how to repair attachment difficulties and to build secure, loving relationships. Covering all of the 'need to know' issues including how to spot attachment difficulties, build resilience and empathy and responding to problematic behaviour, this book will be an invaluable resource for families and professionals caring for children who are fostered, adopted or who have experienced early trauma.
