The relationship between Israel and the church is a crucial reference point in theology, especially in distinguishing between dispensational and nondispensational ways of thinking. The thesis of this book is that Israel and the church are distinct theological institutions that have arisen in the historical progress of divine revelation. But they are also related as successive phases of a redemptive program that is historically progressive and eschatologically converging. The approach to these issues here is neither polemical nor apologetic; rather, it anticipates a convergence among evangelical scholars in the recognition of both continuity and discontinuity in the Israel-church relationship. This book has three purposes: - To offer a contemporary dispensational treatment of that relationship through an exegetical examination of key texts with a focus on theological concerns - To foster genuine dialogue with nondispensational thinkers regarding major biblical themes tied to the plan of God - To identify the changes in dispensational thought that have developed since the publication of Charles Ryrie's book Dispensationalism Today in 1965

The Case For Progressive Dispensationalism

Author : Robert L. Saucy

Debate abounds on the future of Israel and Israel's relation to the Church. Saucy affirms that the Old Testament prophecies are completely fulfilled in the future, the nation of Israel has a prophetic future, and Israel is not the Church. But he shows that the fulfillment of OT prophecy begins in the present church age and there is a continuity between the Church and the OT messianic program rather than an unrelated mystery parenthesis.

Baptist Theology

This title offers a comprehensive analysis of Baptist theology. Embracing in one common trajectory the major Baptist confessions of faith, the major Baptist theologians, and the principal Baptist theological movements and controversies, this book spans four centuries of Baptist doctrinal history. Acknowledging first the pre-1609 roots (patristic, medieval, and Reformational) of Baptist theology, it examines the Arminian versus Calvinist issues that were first expressed by the General Baptists and the Particular Baptists; that dominated English and American Baptist theology during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries from Helwys and Smyth and from Bunyan and Kiffin to Gill, Fuller, Backus, and Boyce; and, that were quickened by the 'awakenings' and the missionary movement. Concurrently there were the Baptist defense of the Baptist distinctives vis-a-vis the pedobaptist world and the unfolding of a strong Baptist confessional tradition. Then during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the liberal versus evangelical issues became dominant with Hovey, Strong, Rauschenbusch, and Henry in the North and Mullins, Conner, Hobbs, and Criswell in the South even as a distinctive Baptist Landmarkism developed, the discipline of biblical theology was practiced and a structured ecumenism was pursued. Missiology both impacted Baptist theology and took it to all the continents, where it became increasingly indigenous. Conscious that Baptists belong to the free churches and to the believers' churches, a new generation of Baptist theologians at the advent of the twenty-first century appears somewhat more Calvinist than Arminian and decidedly more evangelical than liberal.

Doukhan shows how careless interprretations of Scripture can spawn anti-Semitism. He examines the traditional theories: Has God rejected the Jews as His special people and replaced then with the Christian church(supersessionis,)? Or does He have two separate ways of salvation, Judaiam and Christianity, under different convenants (dispensationalism)? Or is there a third and better way to understand God's plan for the Jews?; Israel has the law without Jesus, and the church has Jesus without the law. Doukhan argues that the movements diverged when Christianity rejected the law, and suggests that Advntism can play an important role in healing the breach. - Introduction; Section I: Teh Rejection- Supersessionist Theory; 1. "Many Bible-believing Christians are convinced that God blesses those nations that stand with Israel and curses those that don't. This belief has had a significant influence on attitudes towards the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Middle East." "Stephen Sizer contends that this view is based on misinterpretation of the Bible. He provides an introduction to Christian Zionism and a clear response and positive alternative based on a careful study of relevant biblical texts. His intention is to encourage dialogue on the relationship between Israel and the Christian church, and offer a more constructive view of the future and our role in it."--BOOK JACKET.
