The role of educational leaders has changed radically as countries attempt to transform their education systems to prepare young people to function in today's world of rapid technological and social change, economic globalization, and increased migration and mobility. This book argues that, in order to achieve this transformation, there is an urgent need for new paradigms of schooling. It offers practical advice on how to bring about such breakthrough change from within schools. Dancing on a Shifting Carpet documents how schools can reinvent themselves to meet the needs of contemporary and future students. The book describes and explains specific models that can be used. It recommends a leadership model that schools could adopt to facilitate their reinvention, and it provides specific advice on how to develop and sustain reinvented cultures in their schools. It also suggests a new methodology for insider researchers in positions of power within their own organization.

'Susan Jeffers' wisdom feels like a precious gift. Her counsel is profound and meaningful in such challenging times.' MARIANNE WILLIAMSON 'Original, courageous and brilliant!' WARREN FARRELL * * * * * * * * * * Nobody knows what will happen in the next moment of our lives. Whatever is in store for us, the only thing we CAN be sure of is that nothing in life is certain. And since we all fear the unknown, life's uncertainty can be a constant source of worry to us. But, as bestselling author Susan Jeffers explains, life doesn't have to be one worry after the next, a steady stream of 'what if's', and a constant attempt to create a secure haven for ourselves. In EMBRACING UNCERTAINTY she emphasises that an unknown future doesn't prevent a rich and abundant life, and shows how by enjoying life's unpredictability we transform ourselves from a position of fear to one filled with excitement and potential. Through invaluable case-studies, exercises and her pragmatic wisdom, Susan convinces us, above all, that life is exhilarating because of, not in spite of the uncertainty.

Any vision that underestimates the importance of leadership transition is incomplete. After all, God’s purposes have longer shelf lives than His leaders. Dancing with Cinderella outlines several core principles drawn from Jeff Harlow's leadership transition as the senior pastor of a church of over 3000 members. It serves to help other leaders navigate the organizational, relational, and emotional details of a leadership transition without losing momentum. It doesn’t matter if you’re the leader of a small or large church, old or plant church, traditional or contemporary church, obscure or iconic church; an unhealthy leadership transition hurts people and cripples mission. Jeff's story will help leaders, teams, and the members of a church think through the principles of transition as they prepare for the exit of a current pastor and the entrance of their new leader. This book addresses many of the questions that a transition raises: • Why are transitions so hard? • What is really at the heart of the transition? • How do the objectives of a leader change after the transition starts? • How do departing leaders define future boundaries? In these pages you can discover how to do transition right, so you don’t have to figure out why it went wrong.

Terry Walker is an even-tempered, successful mathematics professor, comfortable with his world—the order and predictability of it. He likes the kind of life one lives in a quiet Salt Lake City subdivision. At his children's births, he masks his terror with numbers—his wife's contractions and dilations, blood pressure, heart rate. At funerals he absorbs his grief by calculating the cubic feet of earth the coffin and vault will displace. But control is illusive, something his fifteen-year-old son Blake never lets him forget. A sensitive boy, Blake has refused to eat meat since the time he could walk. Fearing he will hurt his friends' feelings, Blake withdraws from a spelling bee that he could easily win. More importantly, however, Blake harbors a secret that he keeps from Terry. Driving this important first novel are issues and characters Thomas Mann himself would have found compelling. Terry Walker's inability to accept what he knows and does not know about his child, what he possibly could never accept, exacts a high price. Almost at the threshold of insanity, the father begins waging a war against a powerful chaos. Van Wagoner takes his readers beyond a simple foretelling of what happens in such situations to deep beneath the story's skin, to a place readers will find familiar and perhaps even irresistible. Tim Sandlin has commented on Dancing Naked (Sandlin is the author of Skipped Parts, a New York Times “Notable Book.”), noting how “remarkably clean” Van Wagoner's prose is. He calls him a “first-rate writer” and adds that he “stares deep into the heart of intolerance, grief, and redemption, and does not blink.” David Lee (Western States Book Award for My Town) considers Van Wagoner “the best contemporary writer in Utah.” Elaborating, he writes: “Reading Van Wagoner is like opening a can of biscuits: there's the pop, the swelling, the aroma of fresh dough, and the anticipation of flavor. And the wonder: how can he fit so much into such a small vessel?” Similarly, Levi Peterson (Association for Mormon Letters Book Award for Canyons of Grace) praises the “mastery of language” and “perfectly cadenced sentences” in Dancing Naked. He says that it is remarkable that Van Wagoner can so perfectly present “the effects of male ego—a punitive anger turned against homosexuality—upon three generations of a family.”

When Thomas received two news clippings from his favorite aunt, he never could have anticipated the historical odyssey that the obituary and the story about the sale of an antebellum plantation in Charleston, South Carolina, would take him on. Intrigued by all things Civil War, he travels to South Carolina to the estate sale and purchases a trunk in which he finds the diaries of Major Charles McGuire. The diaries inspire him to write The Memoirs of a Confederate Gentleman... Charles Everson McGuire was born into a world of peace and plenty. Life for him and those he loved would promise only more of the same. Upon his eighteenth birthday, he is sent to England for his education and to learn the family textile manufacturing business. As the years pass and war becomes inevitable, the drums and bugles call from across the Atlantic. Charles realizes that he must go home and confront the issues of states' rights, slavery, and family obligations head on. Upon his return, Charles marries the beautiful and spirited Josephine St. John. He promises his new bride he will not join the conflict between the states, but that promise is soon broken when the Confederacy convinces him that his help and resources are critical for victory. But victory is not to be for the South. The horror of war and the devastation of the major's homeland and his way of life lead him to question his faith and all that he has been taught. Charles finds that he must pick up the pieces of his shattered life and build a new existence for him and those who depend on him. But will he be able to start a fresh life in the new union? Thomas William Tear lives in the quaint, historic town of New Castle, Delaware, where he designs reproductions of historic clothing for Civil War reenactors. He has written numerous short stories and information pamphlets. Memoirs of a Confederate Gentleman is his first novel.
