In this timely tale of immigration, two cousins learn the importance of family and friendship. A year of discoveries culminates in a performance full of surprises, as two girls find their own way to belong. Mexico may be her parents’ home, but it’s certainly not Margie’s. She has finally convinced the other kids at school she is one-hundred percent American—just like them. But when her Mexican cousin Lupe visits, the image she’s created for herself crumbles. Things aren’t easy for Lupe, either. Mexico hadn’t felt like home since her father went North to find work. Lupe’s hope of seeing him in the United States comforts her some, but learning a new language in a new school is tough. Lupe, as much as Margie, is in need of a friend. Little by little, the girls’ individual steps find the rhythm of one shared dance, and they learn what “home” really means. In the tradition of My Name is Maria Isabel—and simultaneously published in English and in Spanish—Alma Flor Ada and her son Gabriel M. Zubizarreta offer an honest story of family, friendship, and the classic immigrant experience: becoming part of something new, while straying true to who you are.

Iris Marion Young was a world-renowned feminist moral and political philosopher whose many books and articles spanned more than three decades. She explored issues of social justice and oppression theory, the phenomenology of women's bodies, deliberative democracy and questions of terrorism, violence, international law and the role of the national security state. Her works have been of great interest to those both in the analytic and Continental philosophical tradition, and her roots range from critical theory (Habermas and Marcuse), and phenomenology (Beauvoir and Merleau Ponty) to poststructural psychoanalytic feminism (Kristeva and Ingaray). This anthology of writings aims to carry on the fruitful lines of thought she created and contains works by both well-known and younger authors who explore and engage critically with aspects of her work. The essays include personal remembrances as well as a last interview with Young about her work. The essays are organized into topic areas that are of interest to students in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in ethics, feminist theory, and political philosophy.

I have titled this short story “The Dancing Will Never End; A Short Story of a Love Affair”. If a person takes into consideration the time we began going steady till Cleo’s death, we spent over Sixty Years together. Ours was not the type of love which is written about in fictional love stories. The romantic love left after a while. As this superficial romantic love faded true love took hold. The romantic love was but the soil and fertilizer which allowed our true love to flourish and grow so deeply. Having said this, our relationship and love affair was not a life spent kissing or ‘lovie dovie”, never having an argument or agreeing on everything. Our love if viewed by an outside observer would not manifest itself as any different as the relationship one may observe of any other married couple. But it was different we had become truly one and this was our love affair. In our relationship, we learned to listen to each other, make compromises and respect each other. We not only listened to each other, we made decisions together. Separation or divorces were words which were never part of our vocabulary. This action was one we would never have contemplated. We learned to accept each other’s faults, adjust our own behavior so as to meld with each other. We loved each other enough to work out any problem or disappointment even when something hurtful had been said. Our love was like poet’s have written, “An unconditional love that is most understanding and a vulnerable love that supports, comforts and is “DETERMINED TO TRIUMPH OVER EVERY CHALLENGE OR ADVERSITY IT MAY ENCOUNTER”. I first fell in love with Cleo at the Sadie Hawkins Dance. We professed our love to each other at our high school Sock hop dance. We danced all of our lives till Cleo’s medical condition did not allow doing so. As long as I am alive and neither my memory or mental acuity fails me, the dancing will never end.

Dancing With A Kitchen Chair

ISBN : 9781883911683
Genre : Biography & Autobiography
File Size : 23.15 MB
Format : PDF, Mobi
Download : 268

In this vibrant collection of autobiographical essays, Sandra Rushing gracefully blends spirituality with old-fashioned honesty to communicate life's lessons and teach us what it means to be human. Set at the historic Poor House Farm in the tranquil Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, this is the story of the tragedy and mystery of growing up, the exhilaration of freedom, and the empty hunger of grief. Her Scottish father's fierce temper and unbounded generosity, her mother's Irish melancholia, and the power of the land merge and convey a passion felt on every page. Rushing's lyrical description and moving tales of strife, hope, and love craft the premise of the human journey—that “fighting and scrapping are part of it, whatever form they take,” that life is a gift, and that all things have a purpose.

Dancing Naked ... in fuzzy red slippers isn't about life, but about living life. You'll visit Tobago on a warm summer evening, and Venice at twilight. This isn't a travel book in the usual sense, but it does explore interesting landscapes of the mind and heart. It talks about dancing naked in the morning and being late for work, and visits divorce and the accompanying sorrows and joys. It introduces you to a homeless woman named Joan, and tells about the death of a basset hound named Rufus. It takes you through a "near-love" experience, and gives instructions on what to do with an extra half-hour you find lying on the ground. And in the end, it's about how beautiful we all are, despite our stumbling, bumbling ways, and what a joy it is to be part of this marvelous, exclusive club we call -- being human. Book jacket.

Dancing With Shadows

Author : Shiraz Pradhan
ISBN : 9781482835953
Genre : Fiction
File Size : 84.22 MB
Format : PDF, Docs
Download : 737
Read : 400

Scientific determinism, Tarot cards, Cinema, Music, Love, and Quantum Physics. The narrator negotiates love, murder, and war in this captivating philosophical journey. Pradhan is exceptional in showing the narrator's holistic approach to understanding. Quantum physics and love. A united theory of everything? It is an idealistic adolescent goal, and this is what makes Dancing with Shadows so interesting. This is a coming of age story of a young man in East Africa whose intuition tells him that these things are all connected. In his growing self-awareness and world weariness, he is obsessed with connecting the dots of his life in order to reveal some profound significance (i. e. the "music of God"). Who hasn't pondered such questions? How is my life unique or significant? How much more would life mean to me if I understood, say, the music of God...and what is the music of God? Although he is a young man continually preoccupied with sex and love, he is essentially a philosopher. He wants to understand things such as the life application of a quantum wave collapse or the difference between sex and love. This story is a Hamlet-esque self-portrait in his constant questioning. It echoes the uncertain and awkward, yet outwardly confident manner of Holden Caulfield. But above all, this story made me think of the kind quest for mystical self-importance that I recall from Joyce's narrator in "Araby."

A New Most Excellent Dancing Master

In the mid-nineteenth century Joseph Lowe, dancing master of Edinburgh, taught at Queen Victoria's Court, in autumn at Balmoral and Christmas time at Windsor. The Journal is an account of these visits - of Queen Victoria practicing her Scotch steps for the Reel, of Princess Alice who danced a fetching Spanish solo, of Prince Alfred who was talented on the violin, of the Princess who turned her foot inwards while dancing, of the spirited Lady-in-Waiting who begged for extra lessons, of the children's chest expander exercises, and of how many trout Mr. Lowe caught when he took the Prince of Wales fishing. Concerts are held, balls last far into the night; the musical and dance life of the court is glimpsed through a myriad of Lowe's comments (always discreet), and a cheerful family life is portrayed. After the Prince Consort's untimely death, Mr. Lowe no longer attends the court. Archives at Windsor Castle reveal that two of his daughters continued to teach there for a decade but no journal of the period has been traced to the family collection which contains the original Lowe manuscript.

Eddie didn't favor anyone in his family. Fair, blonde, and green-eyed, he stood in sharp contrast to the other darker-complected, dark-haired, blue-eyed members. The difference created a rift in the family fabric and his mother singled him out for abuse, irrationally holding him responsible for the family's turmoil. Little Eddie struggled with the severity of his maltreatment but, by age eleven, could no longer handle the circumstances of his life. He decided his only escape would be to die, that by conscious will, he could simply resolve to give up life and cease to exist. Eddie's mind, alerted to his decision, and believing the ultimate goal for any entity was to continue, regardless of form or quality of life, was determined to survive. Panicked at the threat of cessation, his mind made a desperate decision -- it fractured his personality and created Randy from traits that had been repressed in Eddie. Randy, a tough, defiant individual, was created to bring new energy, new life, and stand in defense of the defeated, accepting Eddie. Rising to the challenge, he accepted the responsibility of his creation and was fiercely focused to protecting Eddie while endeavoring to create new circumstances for the life they shared. Randy was proud of his efforts to save Eddie. He knew he was Eddie's paladin, his champion, created for a noble purpose -- to bring Eddie back from the brink of oblivion. After many struggles, Randy's efforts appeared to be successful and the mind considered the possibility of enjoying the existence he'd insured. It pondered the idea of Eddie being involved with the world, rather than merely persisting through the time allotted for the life. Aware of Eddie's inability to interact with the world around him, the mind again fractured the personality creating Jesse, a new facet, an aesthetic personality, focused to tender feelings of love and friendship -- and aspects which determine quality of life. Jesse felt he was created to experience emotions and appreciate beauty, to evolve the repressed side of the personality, to bring stability to the entity. He believed he was born to search for love, to find the emotional equilibrium that would bring the separate identities into harmony. Developed from suppressed characteristics, Jesse was creative and confident, loving and inquisitive, charming and fun loving. And he was on a quest -- determined to achieve his goal. Without Eddie's awareness of them, Randy and Jesse sought to balance their existence and hoped they were achieving what they saw as a normal life until Jesse experienced an incident which shattered that belief and forced them to realize they had not progressed as far as they thought. Jesse's realization that he had made a terrible mistake was devastating. Jumping to a conclusion, Randy, the controlling personality, in his determination to fend off any challenges to them, felt he must take over to handle the crisis in an effort to protect them...
