Dance Studies is a major academic and practice field and the 2017 Dance Fields Conference staked a claim for Dance Studies in the 21st century. The twelve essays collected here capture much of the range and spirit of the conference presentations. The co-conveners of the conference and now editors of the collection invited contributions that covered multiple themes, including the documentation of overlooked or emerging histories; new critical insights, initiatives and perspectives (including inventive dissemination platforms); fresh interdisciplinary exchanges or other innovative insights. Authors include practitioners, teachers and researchers from a range of backgrounds and geographical locations. The editors have organised the book into a series of companion writings; companion because they focus on a similar or related theme, or method. Several chapters are co-authored, revealing the companionship that is a common feature of teaching, practice and research in Dance Studies more generally.

Fields in Motion: Ethnography in the Worlds of Dance examines the deeper meanings and resonances of artistic dance in contemporary culture. The book comprises four sections: methods and methodologies, autoethnography, pedagogies and creative processes, and choreographies as cultural and spiritual representations. The contributors bring an insiders insight to their accounts of the nature and function of these artistic practices, giving voice to dancers, dance teachers, creators, programmers, spectators, students, and scholars. International and intergenerational, this collection of groundbreaking scholarly research points to a new direction for both dance studies and dance anthropology. Traditionally the exclusive domain of aesthetic philosophers, the art of dance is here reframed as cultural practice, and its significance is revealed through a chorus of voices from practitioners and insider ethnographers.

In this, the first comprehensive study of the Tonga people in Zimbabwe, Pamela Reynolds focuses on children s work in a subsistence agricultural system, assessing how much work they do, the value of their work to their families and how it both limits their opportunities and fosters their personal growth and knowledge. Set in the context of the history of the Tonga people south of the Zambezi river and a discussion of their current position as a minority group in independent Zimbabwe, this is a study of social differentiation, particularly the impact of gender and age, and of the individual as a social agent. Based on extensive fieldwork among the Tonga, it avoids the usual trap of analyzing children s labour roles in isolation from social, economic and political factors."
