Planning to have a baby is an exciting time for any family, but difficulties with conception can quickly turn excitement into anxiety and worry. For 14 percent of couples in the United States, creating a life is not the miraculous experience they expected, but rather one filled with stress, trips to the doctor, and invasive procedures. But infertility treatment doesn’t have to be invasive and distant. In Curing Infertility with Ancient Chinese Medicine, fertility expert Dr. Yaron Seidman teaches couples how to live healthier, more balanced lives and create an environment where a baby can grow without resorting to surgery. Curing Infertility with Ancient Chinese Medicine shows you how it is possible to conceive even when Western medicine has deemed it impossible. Dr. Seidman explains in a clear, concise, and easy-to-follow way how patients can use the Hunyuan Method to dramatically increase their ability to conceive in a healthy, natural way and improve overall health using ancient Chinese herbal medicine. Primarily intended for infertility patients, Curing Infertility with Ancient Chinese Medicine is also aimed at modern Chinese medical practitioners, most of whom lack any training in the classical ways. Inside, Dr. Seidman shows time and time again that it is, in fact, possible to conceive.

Infertility affects more than 3 million married couples in the United States. This study explored the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treating female infertility. Surveys queried allopathic practitioners and TCM practitioners regarding their perceived knowledge and use of TCM. The vast majority of allopathic practitioners referred patients to acupuncturists and believed that acupuncture helped patients. The majority of respondents identified a trend for treating female infertility with TCM and Western medical procedures. The majority of respondents supported the concurrent use of allopathic protocols and TCM but did not support the concurrent use of TCM and Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM). More than 62% of respondents expressed familiarity with clinical studies that used TCM for treating stress, depression, and irregular menstrual cycles. Positive results from evidence-based studies would likely encourage allopathic practitioners to use TCM and adopt a more holistic, collaborative approach for treating female infertility.

Anthropology, having progressed from being a colonial exercise to a post-colonial tool for intellectual rebirth, and with its central concern with culture and its fieldwork-based approach, must be central to the dialogue about Africa's future. This volume proceeds from a conference of the Association for Anthropology in Southern Africa to assess the state, status and future of anthropology in Southern Africa. It is inspired by the concept of the African Renaissance coined by Thabo Mbeki, and his implied intellectual call to arms to face problems within the African continent by using African ideals, institutions and intelligentsia; and in its diverse responses it is an effort to strengthen the movement. The essays are grouped into sections on: rethinking anthropology; the reinvention of culture and tradition; perspectives on gender and youth; the place of anthropology in development; and land, space and landscapes. Particular weight is given to medical anthropology, and anthropology with applications for development.

Throughout history and throughout the world today, problems of health, sickness, and medical treatment have been intimately interwoven with social, cultural, and political life generally. Medical anthropology deals with these problems from a biocultural perspective, recognizing the deep connections between cultural patterns, historical change, and life processes. This book draws on a rich array of ethnographic cases from around the world to demonstrate the complexities of ideas and practices that surround the health of the human body, and how health is impacted by the beliefs and practices of the community. The authors make particular use of new materials from their field areas among the Hagen and Duna people in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The book is intended as a textbook useable for both anthropology courses and courses for medical students. The topics covered include a survey of earlier works in medical anthropology, regimens of bodily treatment, sex and reproduction, medical pluralism, doctor-patient communication, epidemiology, ethnopsychiatry, illness and the emotions, and how diseases such as AIDS have altered the ways in which individuals see themselves and 'traditional' practices alter to accommodate new diseases.Andrew Strathern and Pamela J. Stewart are a husband and wife anthropological team who work in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea and the Lowlands of Scotland.

Instructional and inspirational to anyone going through it or seeking to understand it deeply and in all its variations, these are real stories of hope and humor — and some practical advice that is often overlooked but easy to incorporate into your life. These stories about real women, related by Mary Wong with both compassion and authority, retain many of the subjects’ own words and particular perspectives. Through their stories, Mary explains the central principles of fertility treatment by both Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners and Western doctors. Each story focuses on a set of archetypal challenges or life situations found in patients seeking fertility treatment. In this way, the book serves as a comprehensive examination of the spectrum of infertility experience, expressed through the lens of highly personal anecdotes and intimate experiences.
