COUNTING BY 7S tells the story of Willow Chance, a twelve-year-old genius who is obsessed with diagnosing medical conditions and finds comfort in counting by 7s. It has never been easy for her to connect with anyone other than her adoptive parents, but that hasn't kept her from leading a quietly happy life . . . until now. Suddenly Willow's world is tragically changed when her parents both die in a car crash, leaving her alone in a baffling world. Her journey to find a fascinatingly diverse and fully believable surrogate family is a joy and a revelation to read.

Newbery-winning Rules meets Counting by 7s in this affecting story of a girl’s devotion to her brother and what it means to be home When eleven-year-old Thyme Owens’ little brother, Val, is accepted into a new cancer drug trial, it’s just the second chance that he needs. But it also means the Owens family has to move to New York, thousands of miles away from Thyme’s best friend and everything she knows and loves. The island of Manhattan doesn’t exactly inspire new beginnings, but Thyme tries to embrace the change for what it is: temporary. After Val’s treatment shows real promise and Mr. Owens accepts a full-time position in the city, Thyme has to face the frightening possibility that the move to New York is permanent. Thyme loves her brother, and knows the trial could save his life—she’d give anything for him to be well—but she still wants to go home, although the guilt of not wanting to stay is agonizing. She finds herself even more mixed up when her heart feels the tug of new friends, a first crush, and even a crotchety neighbor and his sweet whistling bird. All Thyme can do is count the minutes, the hours, and days, and hope time can bring both a miracle for Val and a way back home. With equal parts heart and humor, Melanie Conklin’s debut is a courageous and charming story of love and family—and what it means to be counted. From the Hardcover edition.

Understand the Math Underlying Some of Your Favorite Gambling Games Basic Gambling Mathematics: The Numbers Behind the Neon explains the mathematics involved in analyzing games of chance, including casino games, horse racing, and lotteries. The book helps readers understand the mathematical reasons why some gambling games are better for the player than others. It is also suitable as a textbook for an introductory course on probability. Along with discussing the mathematics of well-known casino games, the author examines game variations that have been proposed or used in actual casinos. Numerous examples illustrate the mathematical ideas in a range of casino games while end-of-chapter exercises go beyond routine calculations to give readers hands-on experience with casino-related computations. The book begins with a brief historical introduction and mathematical preliminaries before developing the essential results and applications of elementary probability, including the important idea of mathematical expectation. The author then addresses probability questions arising from a variety of games, including roulette, craps, baccarat, blackjack, Caribbean stud poker, Royal Roulette, and sic bo. The final chapter explores the mathematics behind "get rich quick" schemes, such as the martingale and the Iron Cross, and shows how simple mathematics uncovers the flaws in these systems.

Coordination Polymerization contains the proceedings of a symposium sponsored by the American Chemical Society and held at the University of California-Los Angeles on April 3, 1974. The papers explore developments in coordination polymerization and cover topics ranging from stereoselection and stereoelection in α-olefin polymerization to heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta polymerization; transition metal alkyl polymerization catalysts; chain transfer in Ziegler-type polymerization of ethylene; and stereospecific polymerization of diolefins by h3-allylic coordination complexes. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with a discussion on Karl Ziegler's major contributions to the chemistry of free radicals, organo-alkali metal compounds, many-membered rings, and organotransition metallic compounds. The next two chapters focus on the origin of steric control in the polymerization of α-olefins, with emphasis on steroselection and stereoelection as well as the influence of the chirality of the transition metal on the stereoregularity of the resulting polymer. The problem of counting active sites is then addressed, and results obtained with various methods are compared. The mechanisms of initiation, propagation, termination, and transfers in polymerizations by (π-C5H5)2 TiCl2 catalysts are also considered, along with polymerizations by allyl, benzyl, trimethylsilmethyl, and other derivatives of Ti and Zr. The last three chapters examine the kinetics of Ziegler-Natta polymerization; the Langmuir adsorption mechanism; supported Ziegler-Natta catalysts; factors that affect the stereoregularity of polymerization of propylene by supported catalysts; and polymerizations of diolefins to equibinary polymers by h3-allylic coordination complexes. This monograph will be of interest to chemists as well as polymer scientists and engineers.

Avery (Night Owl) is bookish, intense, likes to plan ahead, and is afraid of many things. Bett (Dogfish) is fearless, outgoing, and lives in the moment. What they have in common is that they are both twelve years old, and their dads are dating each other. Bett and Avery are sent, against their will, to the same camp for the summer vacation. Their dads hope that they will find common ground and become friends – and possibly, one day, even sisters. Against all odds, the girls soon can’t imagine a life without each other. But when the worst happens, and their dads break up, Avery and Bett must figure out a way to get them to fall in love again. Is keeping a family together as easy as they think it is? From two extraordinary authors comes this moving, exuberant, laugh-out-loud novel about friendship and family, told entirely in emails and letters. Perfect for 9+ fans of R. J.
