Despite its size and social diversity, the United States is one nation, and what happens in one city or neighborhood ultimately affects all Americans. Connecting the Dots addresses the complex relationships between family and community, and between community and other players affecting family and community life, including the private sector, government, nonprofit groups, and religious organizations. Contrary to much rhetoric, Wireman argues that America does not suffer from a loss of family values, but from a shift in business practices and public commitments. The American dream of work hard, buy a home, and give your children a better life is no longer realistic for millions of workers, both white-collar and blue-collar. At an individual level, millions of Americans face significant challenges as they go about trying to meet the everyday responsibilities of earning an income, feeding their families, maintaining their health, finding housing, handling everyday household chores, and caring for their children. Besides identifying top-down structures, laws, and attitudes that create a supportive context for family life, the book includes bottom-up anecdotal examples to ground its policy-oriented discussion. It also provides statistical data needed to develop realistic solutions. Wireman examines diversity as well, since how America handles racial and ethnic differences remains crucial to its future. She discusses ways in which communities have created social capital, community cohesion, and local organizational ability. Wireman provides a framework for policymakers, local community leaders, and neighborhood activists to use in analyzing their situations and selecting the best approach; she also describes what various players can and must do to uphold the American dream. Connecting the Dots will be of keen interest to sociologists, political scientists, economists, and social workers.

Your life matters, and it matters on an infinite and eternal scale. That may sound like a bold claim. Maybe you spend most of your day behind a desk or chauffeuring children or repeating one of a thousand ordinary routines. Nothing about your daily life seems world-changing or history-making to you. A life-crushing loss or a humiliating setback may leave you feeling that your world is irreparably broken. Chronic illness or a stalled career may have you wondering whether you have anything truly significant to offer. You may have reached the pinnacle of success, and now you find yourself wondering, “Is this all that there is?” Nevertheless, your life matters. That is the core message of Christian hope. This book is devoted to helping its readers not only to understand the concept of hope, but more importantly to draw upon hope as the powerful force that inspires our daily lives. Christian hope is far more than wishful thinking or a positive attitude. Optimism in all its forms places its bets on what we humans can accomplish. By contrast, hope is rooted in what Christ has already achieved on the cross and what God promises to accomplish for us in the future. God connects the dots of our lives.

We have learned from nature that animal and plant life thrives when all the systems of their surroundings are in harmony. The same can be said for human institutions. When the organizational systems of human institutions are in harmony, the organization thrives. This book identifies the interaction of eight organizational components that promote creative ministry in the Christian church setting. The author combines biblical study, management theory and hard-earned experience to help church leaders understand and use organizational systems to maximize their ministry. Connect the dots of these eight components for effective ministry in the 21st century.

I grew up in a large family in Kansas City, Missouri. I had no siblings and my father was not in the home. My wonderful mother was a mere 15 years old when she became pregnant with me. She and I really did grow up together! I was in junior high school before I ever called her "mom" For my personal protection and development, my young single mother uprooted herself from her parents and relocated to Kansas City, Kansas, which enabled me to attend Sumner High School, the high school of both my parents. With much help from my family, neighbors, school teachers, and students, I developed a new and unexpected vision and an attitude to achieve after I had clearly become a truant. The Sumner high school students, particularly my classmates, were the most influential to my success. They gave me a wonderful and critical "vote of confidence" by electing me president of our class for four consecutive years. The students and teachers, with my mother's leadership, absolutely changed my view of myself! They instilled the seeds of ambition and accomplishment in my vision. My mother served to direct this new and unexpected energy. Clearly, based on existing evidence, my new ambition was not innate! It evolved from uncontrolled circumstances. Without a plan or an identified dream, I had a wonderfully successful thirty year marketing career with the IBM Corporation. I promoted the Universal Product Code (UPC) in the early days, well before it had become proven technology accepted in the worldwide retail industry.
