From the pages of Tricycle, the country’s most widely read Buddhist magazine, comes Commit to Sit, an introduction to the art of meditation. In recent years, interest in meditation has grown to include not only those on a spiritual search, but also those who are simply working toward a healthy and meaningful life. This book brings together a broad range of Buddhist meditative techniques that have appeared in the magazine over the years. Contributors include some of theforemost voices in contemporary Buddhism: Pema Chödrön starts our journey with an inspirational Foreword. Lama Surya Das explores the definition of meditation, while Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein lay out a 28-day program for establishinga daily practice. Wherever you are on your search, you will find plenty of guidance in this book. Learn about insight meditation from Bhante Henepola Gunaratana and Sylvia Boorstein. Or about zazen from Barry Magid and Martine Batchelor. Gil Fronsdal offers instruction in metta (lovingkindness) meditation, while Judith Simmer-Brown teaches tonglen, a Tibetan Buddhist practice for cultivating compassion. We also learn about the crucial role the body plays in meditation from S. N. Goenka, Reginald Ray, Wes Nisker, and Cyndi Lee.We receive guidance on managing issues that arise in meditation from Jon Kabat-Zinn, Christina Feldman, Matthieu Ricard, Pat Enkyo O’Hara, and others. And there are practices for bringing mindfulness and compassion to daily life from Thubten Chodron, Sayadaw U Tejaniya, and Michael Carroll. Though targeted to the reader who would like to begin meditating, this collection also offers support and guidance to the experienced meditator working to sustain a lifelong practice. Right from the get-go I was never going to believe that we were not meant to be happy! At just 15 years of age the thought of spending the rest of my life in misery because “we weren’t put on this earth to be happy” was a thought too frightening to conceive. As I projected this sentiment forward and imagined the long years ahead, then and there I made the commitment that I was going to find the pathway to happiness: that I would live a joyful life. By the time I had reached my middle years this commitment had become an obsession. During this lifetime, I would find the keys to happiness. Whatever it took, joy was my goal and I wouldn’t rest until I found it. With glimpses of happiness along the way, I was motivated and driven. “Love yourself first!” What does that mean? How do you do that? There were lots of great suggestions but very few helpful guidelines. Entrenched in a middle-income mindset I held many limiting beliefs that kept me squarely where I was. But for an enquiring mind and a fearless heart that had almost lost its desire to fight on, I may have drowned in the mire of unworthiness. Little by little the pieces of the puzzle came together. My journey took me to explore both inside and out: what others had to offer and the filters through which I was living my life. A woman on a mission, I wouldn’t let it go until I had discovered the answers. Joy! We are meant to be joyful. We are meant to be happy.

The Sit Room

The Sit Room brings you inside the secretive Situation Room of the White House, the most important deliberative room in the world, during the early 1990s when the author was one of the policymakers who framed the Clinton Administration's policy towards the bloody Balkans War. Drawing upon newly declassified documents and his own notes, David Scheffer, who later became America's first Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, weaves the true story of how policy options were debated in the Sit Room among the highest national security officials. The road to a final peace deal in late 1995 came at the high price of the murderous siege of Sarajevo and ethnic cleansing of mostly Bosnian Muslims from their homes and towns, including the genocide of Srebrenica's men and teenage boys. The Sit Room reveals the behind-the-scenes story about how American policy evolved--often futilely--to try to stop an intractable war and its shocking atrocities. Main actors in the Sit Room include: the assertive Ambassador to the United Nations, Madeleine Albright; the State Department's ace negotiator, Richard Holbrooke; the cerebral National Security Adviser, Tony Lake; the immigrant Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, John Shalikashvili; the bulldog Deputy National Security Adviser, Sandy Berger; and White House moralist, David Gergen. For almost three years, the Sit Room was littered with shattered proposals to end the war-until armed force backed up diplomacy to compel a fragile peace deal. The Sit Room reveals authentic policy-making at the highest levels, with a unique journey into the arena of war and peace where spirited debate guided America's foreign policy.

The Proposed Abolition Of The Youth Justice Board

The Government has proposed that the Youth Justice Board (YJB) should be abolished, and its inclusion in the Public Bodies Bill is currently the subject of 'ping pong' between the two Houses of Parliament. The YJB is responsible for: advising the Justice Secretary on the operation of the youth justice system; monitoring the performance of that system; purchasing places for, and placing, children and young people remanded or sentenced to custody; disseminating effective practice; making grants to local authorities and others; and commissioning research and publishing information. The Government wants to transfer YJB's functions to a Youth Justice Division of the Ministry of Justice, arguing that this will restore direct Ministerial accountability. The Committee point out that if that does happen, certain steps must be taken to ensure that the new Division: is not part of NOMS; benefits from the establishment of a genuinely and visibly independent Advisory Board; improves the dissemination of best practice; and exercises 'light touch' oversight of Youth Offending Teams.

A scientist before he was a beekeeper, Mark L. Winston found in his new hobby a paradigm for understanding the role science should play in society. In essays originally appearing as columns in Bee Culture, the leading professional journal, Winston uses beekeeping as a starting point to discuss broader issues, such as how agriculture functions under increasingly complex social and environmental restraints, how scientists grapple with issues of accountability, and how people struggle to maintain contact with the natural world. Winston's reflections on bees, beekeeping, and science cover a period of tumultuous change in North America, a time when new parasites, reduced research funding, and changing economic conditions have disrupted the livelihoods of bee farmers."Managed honeybees in the city provide a major public service by pollinating gardens, fruit trees, and berry bushes, and should be encouraged rather than legislated out of existence. Our cities, groomed and cosmopolitan as they appear, still obey the basic rules of nature, and our gardens and yards are no exception. Homegrown squashes, apple trees, raspberries, peas, beans, and other garden crops require bees to move the pollen from one flower to another, no matter how urbanized or sophisticated the neighborhood."

COMMITTED is the ultimate recruiting resource for the pre-collegiate women's lacrosse player. Lacrosse, as with all sports, is a wonderful vehicle; a means to an end, not an end on its own. With that perspective, COMMITTED guides its reader through the process, speaking both to her emotional and rational needs. The recruiting cycle can challenge the simple, untainted love for the sport, change a player's motivation, and test her skills and focus, and this manual will arm her with all the tools to handle each step of the way, emotionally and rationally. There must be a healthy balance of approaching this cycle with mindfulness and focus, and with heart and spirit. COMMITTED provides the perfect equation to doing so while also ensuring the reader that they are leaving no stone unturned in the recruiting process.

Committed is a book written for those who prefer easy reading as opposed to reading with a Thesaurus in front of them to find the meanings and context of certain words. It is a South African tale which explains the lives of very normal people living very normal lives together with the mundane and also the exciting day to day experiences of being with the Police force in and around Southern Africa. Skip, a Jack Russell belonging to Terry lives his life as no normal little dog would, and shows his undivided and devoted love to his mistress spending all day with her as she patrols and combats crime on the streets. For his size he is dynamite. He can perform as well as any trained police dog and it pays off in the end as he receives an award for bravery. Committed is about commitment: love, hate and revenge. It is a lesson of life to those who are still innocent and virginal to life's problems. It focuses on abuse on women and why it is that women in particular find it so difficult to remove themselves out of an abusive relationship. I hope that you will enjoy the simple but exciting way that the story unravels itself with a cryptic and mysterious dream that Terry frequently has.
