"Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is now hugely popular, and as a self-help technique that has helped millions of people in the UK alone, and as an NHS-funded treatment for illnesses like depression. Teach Yourself: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was one of the first and most successful books on CBT. This new edition shows how CBT techniques, which focus on using altered patterns of thinking to achieve goals and overcome problems, can make a major difference to your mentality. The first half of the book explains the background to CBT, what it is, and how to use it. The second half of the book gives examples of how you can use CBT to deal with specific issues, such as helping to overcome depression and anxiety, and boosting your mindfulness, resilience, assertiveness and self-esteem."

Whilst working in a mental health setting for 30 years Mary Heath soon discovered that everyone she encountered shared a similar problem: no one appeared to have any knowledge at all of how to cope with the stress of life and its consequences. The great majority of patients had no coping skills or strategies at all. No one had been taught how to deal with stress, and many didn’t even know what stress was and why they felt so helpless, so alone and so afraid. Mary on the other hand had a very large tool box and a set of skills that helped all of them to change their lives around and become healthier and stronger in every way. Having been trained in many disciplines in the field of stress, anxiety, depression and personal development she was able to tailor an individual’s requirements, according to their specific needs. Working with a wide-ranging and extensive variety of therapies Mary taught people not just how to cope but how to really live again. Many of the techniques and therapies Mary used can be found in this book and include: The Simple Principles of the Philosophy of Yoga Pranayama – a unique sequence of breath control exercises Relaxation, Meditation and Mindfulness Stress and Anxiety Management Depression Management Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Self-Esteem and Confidence Building Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Life Coaching

If You Are Looking for an Effective Method for Finding Relief From Anxiety, Then Keep Reading... Dialectical refers to the combination of two seemingly contradictory ideas. In the case of DBT, these opposites are Acceptance and Change. In DBT, patients are taught to accept things the way they are right now, at this moment, without judgment. Then they look to what change can be made to their behaviors, reactions, how they do things, to make things better in their lives. It is looking at the concept of accepting that at this moment, they are already doing the best that they can, and they can continue to do even better. Behavioral refers to the actions, reactions, and traits that they exhibit. Behavior can be trained. It is all about Reinforcement and Reward. Whenever we do something, and a result happens from it, that action is reinforced. A dog sits for you and is given a treat. This is not about reward, but reinforcement. They come to realize that if they sit (the behavior), they will be given a gift (strengthening of the action). If an individual throws a temper tantrum, and the other person gives in to their demands, the temper tantrum (the behavior) gives them the result that they want (the reinforcement). So, support can work both to the positive and the negative, dependent upon how and when it is applied. In DBT, harmful behaviors are targeted for change and reinforcement/reward. These can be anything from suicidal thoughts and thoughts of self-harm to over-indulgent practices with food and substance abuse, to reckless and impulsive traits. When the patient starts to have a better understanding of the more significant, more imminently harmful behavioral characteristics and how to modify their behaviors, then they can work on the smaller ones, which can also be very dangerous to the person and their loved ones. Each person is unique in what those traits are and how they manifest. The T is, of course, for Therapy. This is a huge part of DBT, because Therapy, many forms that it will take during a DBT program, is essential to the reinforcement of positive behavioral changes and skill-building. It takes a lot of coordinated effort between an individual and their therapist to build a shiny new toolbox filled with the skills needed to change their lives for the better effect. This book covers the following topics: Basic Distress Tolerance Skills Advanced Distress Tolerance Skills More Distress Tolerance Skills Basic Mindfulness Skills Advanced Mindfulness Skills Exploring Mindfulness Further Basic Emotion Regulation Skills Advanced Emotion Regulation Skills Basic Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills Advanced Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills How to Improve One's Personal and Social Skills Exposure-Based Cognitive Rehearsal Putting It All Together And much more Altogether, DBT helps to teach individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (among others) how to regulate their emotions, find healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with stress, how to live in the "now" of the moment, and how to improve their relationships with the people around them. A protocol of easy-to-use tools that can be applied when readers experience difficult-to-manage emotions. Emotional flooding—being overwhelmed by feelings—happens in response to stress, anxiety, and life’s challenges. In this client-orientated accompaniment to Affect Regulation Toolbox, Carolyn Daitch and Lissah Lorberbaum present skills and tools on how to dial down reactivity, practice mindfulness, and focus positively on the future. Written to conquer a broad range of emotional challenges in easily accessibly language, this book is intended to help clients improve the quality of their everyday lives. The workbook is split into two parts. Part I helps the reader understand when and why emotional flooding occurs. Using vivid stories and examples of others’ triggering situations helps the reader better understand their own triggers, and how to cope with them. Part II provides instructions for “daily stress inoculations,” a daily practice for relaxing and lowering baseline levels of emotional reactivity. The STOP Solution is introduced as a way of learning how to stop or lessen feeling emotionally overwhelmed. STOP stands for Scanning thoughts, feelings, and sensations, Taking a time-out, Overcoming Initial Flooding, and Putting tools into practice. Throughout the workbook, readers will find guided imagery exercises, opportunities for journaling and reflection, mindfulness practices, and matching audio exercises on the accompanying CD. A complimentary companion app (for information, visit: www.bitly.com/RoadToCalmApp) also enhances readers’ ability to take these exercises on the go. The result of this gentle and reliable program is resilience, well-being, and freedom from the emotional patterns that create suffering and damage relationships.
