China has one of the world's earliest civilizations and was the first country in the world to make maps. This volume shows how the development of cartography was an inseparable part of ancient Chinese culture and reveals the huge repository of maps in national museums, libraries and preservation centres. The examples are noteworthy, not only as documents charting the development of knowledge of China's topography, but also as works of art with great value in the study of Chinese art, architecture and social life. The book illustrates and examines over 160 maps arranged chronologically and accompanied by scientific analyses on topography and mapping technique. It concludes with a comprehensive chronicle listing important events in map-making history.

When two captured Portugese merchantmen were brought to The Netherlands in the early seventeenth century, their cargoes of Chinese porcelain were enthusiastically received by the Dutch. These plates, dishes and bowls, decorated in blue on a white ground, were named 'Kraak porcelain', a name which has long since been associated with a particular type of Chinese export porcelain not only by the Dutch but also by other countries. This book, the first comprehensive monograph on the subject, is illustrated with 298 color and b&w plates, maps, and drawings. -- Amazon.com.

This book accompanies a major V&A exhibition that explores three hundred years of mutual fascination between East and West, a period of discoveries, encounters and exchanges initiated by the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama's discovery of a sea route to India in 1498. This established, for the first time, direct relations between Europe and maritime Asia and ushered in a dynamic period of commercial, artistic and technological exchange. This story is presented through wide-ranging essays by leading international scholars, including specialists from the V&A. The text is complemented by a sumptuous range of images, many of these remarkable and luxurious pieces being published for the first time. In its close examination of the relationships - diplomatic, religious and personal - between East and West, this book provides both an important scholarly record of this vibrant period in world history and a document of the works of art and industry that it produced.
