The Ephemeral History Of Perfume

Genre : Literary Criticism

In contrast to the other senses, smell has long been thought of as too elusive, too fleeting for traditional historical study. Holly Dugan disagrees, arguing that there are rich accounts documenting how men and women produced, consumed, and represented perfumes and their ephemeral effects. She delves deeply into the cultural archive of olfaction to explore what a sense of smell reveals about everyday life in early modern England. In this book, Dugan focuses on six important scents -- incense, rose, sassafras, rosemary, ambergris, and jasmine. She links these smells to the unique spaces they inhabited -- churches, courts, contact zones, plague-ridden households, luxury markets, and pleasure gardens -- and the objects used to dispense them. This original approach provides a rare opportunity to study how early modern men and women negotiated the environment in their everyday lives and the importance of smell to their daily actions. Dugan defines perfume broadly to include spices, flowers, herbs, animal parts, trees, resins, and other ingredients used to produce artificial scents, smokes, fumes, airs, balms, powders, and liquids. In researching these Renaissance aromas, Dugan uncovers the extraordinary ways, now largely lost, that people at the time spoke and wrote about smell: objects "ambered, civited, expired, fetored, halited, resented, and smeeked" or were described as "breathful, embathed, endulced, gracious, halited, incensial, odorant, pulvil, redolent, and suffite." A unique contribution to early modern studies, The Ephemeral History of Perfume is an unparalleled study of olfaction in the Renaissance, a period in which new scents and important cultural theories about smell were developed. Dugan's inspired analysis of a wide range of underexplored sources makes available to scholars a remarkable wealth of information on the topic.

Many books showcase the triumphs of "hero teachers", who swoop into a classroom full of misfits, transforming them into Shakespearean scholars or algebra geniuses. But for most working teachers, the day-to-day struggles are more subtle and come from the students themselves as they discover the pleasures of learning. Chasing Hellhounds is the story of nationally regarded educator Marvin Hoffman's experience teaching at Jones High, an inner-city school in Houston. Through his tales of teaching literature to a wide variety of students, he gives us an intimate, sympathetic look at what it's like to he both a giver and a recipient of an education today. Hoffman draws vivid portraits of ten of his students: a girl, living in a Greyhound bus station with her family, who wins a scholarship; a hulking student named Seth, whose explosive temper masks a sensitive and gifted writer; and others who overcome adversity through their own determination and talent. He also chronicles his evolution as a teacher, from the schools of the Mississippi Freedom Summer to his assignment at Jones.

In both Mexico and the United States, economic development policies required building railroads, promoting commercial agriculture, and in general fostering efforts to ensure a modern, industrial nation emerged. Peace and order were basic to the success of these efforts, which meant that Indians who resisted any changes on their lands would be fought until they either surrendered or were exterminated. Before the Indian campaigns had ended, Mexico and the United States expended millions of dollars and countless thousands died. This book relates military and political efforts on both sides of the United States-Mexico border to deal with native resistance to late nineteenth-century modernization initiatives.

"Confronting the challenge of producing an accurate likeness of a historical figure whose reign preceded the age of photography, these paintings metaphorically chronicle the life of Napoleon using only the image of his face." "The Napoleon series is followed by a collection of paintings evoking various of the protagonists and events of the French Revolution, some of them juxtaposed with their perceived counterparts in the Third Reich. Thus Marat (arguably the first person to make effective use of the daily press for political purposes) is placed alongside Goebbels (the first to use documentary film for sustained political ends), and the painter Jacques-Louis David meets his match in Albert Speer: similar personalities, similar career trajectories. Powerful and disturbing questions are raised by these extraordinary parallels, and it becomes clear that Scherman is deploying his art both to produce compelling portraits and to examine some of the darkest areas of the human psyche." "The book contains three texts; Jacques Henric provides a dynamic account of the cultural and historical importance of Scherman's work and frame of reference from which it springs, Hans Belting and David Moos discuss the specific project and execution of the Napoleon series, and an interview with Tony Scherman by Sanford Kwinter and Bruce Mau illuminates the artist's motivation, practice and concerns."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
