In Helpers at Birds' Nests, renowned naturalist and ornithologist Alexander Skutch provides vivid, detailed accounts of a remarkable aspect of bird behavior -- the aid that one bird gives another who is neither its mate nor its dependent young and who may even belong to a different species. In graceful, clear prose, Skutch makes accessible to amateur bird-watchers examples of cooperation in species as far-flung as the little rifleman of New Zealand, the Laysan albatross in the mid Pacific, and the neotropical birds of Skutch's own Valley of El General in Costa Rica.

From the bestselling author ofSand Dance. Stuck in an engineer’s cubicle, dutifully beginning the responsible adult life he was raised to undertake, Kirkby is tormented by doubts and boredom. In a fit of rebellion, he quits his job to bicycle the Karakoram Highway in northern Pakistan. He is twenty-two and absolutely clueless. Miraculously, hilariously, he survives — and discovers his life’s passion. Over the next fifteen years, Kirkby navigates an evermore uncertain and uncommon path, honing his skills on some of the most challenging expeditions the world has to offer. Whether it’s gun fights and crocodile attacks while running Africa’s Blue Nile Gorge, the rescue of a fallen sherpa on Mount Everest, evading capture in Myanmar’s forbidden tropical paradise, or learning to embrace the wilderness on the Tatshenshini River of Canada’s Arctic, Kirkby shares with the reader the excitement, doubts, insights, and even the uncomfortable self-knowledge that a life lived on the edge brings.

Indian Grey Hornbill

Author : Raju Kasambe
ISBN : 3845411996

File Size : 66.84 MB

The author studied the ecology and breeding behaviour of Indian Grey Hornbill Ocyceros birostris for two years in Nagpur city in Central India. The hornbills have a hornlike protrusion or casque over their bills. The hornbills have an interesting breeding behaviour. The female seals herself in a living tree cavity till the nestlings are grown enough to accept the food through a small cavity slit. She fledges and the cavity is resealed by the nestlings. They break it when they are ready to fly. This is the only hornbill species in India which breeds in well wooded metropolitan cities. The keystone species in the diet of hornbills were figs of Ficus religiosa and F. benghalensis making up nearly three fourth of its diet during breeding season. The hornbills indulge in various social interactions like bill grappling, aerial jousting and erratic chases in the canopy. The role of bark pieces supplied to nest inmates in nest sanitation was established by the author.
