Reservoir Characterization II contains the proceedings of the Second International Reservoir Characterization Conference held in Dallas, Texas in June 1989. This book represents the proceedings of the second inter disciplinary conference on materials characterization held from July 30 through August 3, 1984 at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. The conference was the 20th in the University Series on Ceramic Science, instituted in 1964 by Alfred University, the University of California at Berkeley, North Carolina State University and Notre Dame University. Volume I of the proceedings of the first conference using this interdisciplinary approach to materials characterization was published as "Advances in Materials Characterization", edited by D. R. Rossington, R. A. Condrate and R. L. Snyder, and was listed as volume 15 of the Materials Science Research series of Plenum Press (New York, 1983). The purpose of bringing together scientists from a wide range of disciplines to present and discuss the latest developments in their fields is to promote cross fertilization. The first conference of this type and its resulting volume of proceedings stimulated a significant dialogue between disciplines concerning the characterization of materials, therefore indicating a need for a continuing series of such conferences. Characterization lies at the core of materials science.

The present work addresses itself to the question of the nature of appraisive concepts such as were the subject of investigation in The Concepts of Value* and The Concepts of Criticism. ** Many problems of prime importance in the theory of value could not be adequately treated there without diminishing the basic purpose of those studies which was above all to identify, classify and provide a general theoretical framework for the host of concepts with which we characterize and commend subjects of appraisal in all of the principal areas of human interest. The author might have forestalled the disappointment of some of his critics had he then explicitly promised to consider those problems at a later time. But his reluctance to promise what he might not be in a position to produce outweighed a keen awareness of what the problems are and of their evident seriousness. Although my treatment of such problems has only now been undertaken, in point of time my concern with them antedates by far the em pirical explorations of the two texts mentioned. Anyone who undertakes such a study is likely to have come under the in fluence of Professor Frank Sibley's 'Aesthetic Concepts't and of later develop ments in his analysis of certain appraisive concepts. What do such concepts mean and how do they mean9 These are the questions he treated in such a stimulating fashion.

Many noninvasive examination methods of the heart have not held out against the invasive methods, which modern cardiac therapy, surgically or with catheterization, requires. They have disappeared completely or are only used by isolated groups of researchers. However, there is an obvious tendency to apply the invasive procedures as the last diagnostic possibility. In the attempt to select clinically relevant methods, the expert authors of this book demonstrate that echocardiography, expanded with contrast and Doppler, has been developed into one of the most important noninvasive methods. The results with tissue characterization show that the possibilities of this method have not yet been fully explored. Nuclear procedures are widely used, although they should only be applied in direct connection with clinical cardiology. The new lead methods of the ecg, such as ecg-mapping, show that standard electrocardiography of electrical functions is not yet fully exploited. The rapidly developing method of computer tomography is also being applied to cardiology. Since nuclear magnetic resonance requires extensive equipment con struction, its future is as yet unsure. Of course, a book like this does not intend to treat the subject of noninvasive cardiology in extensive detail. Established methods like standard electrocardio graphy, phonocardiography and sphygmography are not discussed. The aim of this book is rather to demonstrate the trend of present developments in the field.
