Charlie Chaplin is universally hailed as the greatest comedic talent in the history of motion pictures. And yet Chaplin's early efforts-which account for more than half of his total output-are often overlooked in favor of his later films. In 1914 Chaplin appeared in a total of 35 films for the Keystone Film Company; the following year he signed with the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company, where he wrote, directed and starred in more than a dozen short comedies. Though the resulting pictures were frequently crude and erratic, they reveal the emergence of a formidable comic genius. "Charlie Chaplin at Keystone and Essanay: Dawn of the Tramp" is a film-by-film examination of this period in Chaplin's career, tracing the birth of his beloved 'Tramp" character and his evolution as an actor and filmmaker. Also discussed are how these movies have been re-edited, recopied, reissued and retitled over the years, with a special section that matches pseudonym titles to their original source film. "Charlie Chaplin at Keystone and Essanay: Dawn of the Tramp" is a fascinating look at the first celluloid steps taken by this legendary laughmaker, and is a must for all Chaplin fans, old and new.

Either way, you will possibly learn something ___ and will surely enjoy and benefit from this story of the life of Anthony Bennett Champion, known as Tobe, a Great American of the 21st century. You don’t know about Tobe Champion? Well, you surely wont want to miss knowing all about his life and adventures __ sailing in the Atlantic and the Caribbean, traveling in the US from Massachusetts to Washington, D.C., to California, touring and doing business in several foreign lands, and engaging in the droll and bewildering politics of America __ and finally, learning about his various amorous escapades. In the process of becoming a Great Man, Tobe Champion had to have come from a great family __ including his great grandfather, known as Nappa, his Champion parents and his relatives, the Stanfelds of New Mexico, whose adopted daughter, Honor, partly of Navajo descent, plays a very important role throughout Tobe’s life. He also had to have had wide and diverse contacts with others of his contemporaries __ dozens of friends, associates and supporters who recognized his greatness, all of them being fascinating characters. This is a story of some length and complexity. It is actually three Books in one! Each of Book One, Book Two and Book Three has its own introduction and table of contents, and the volume is introduced with a family tree and lists of persons involved other than family members. So if you find it a bit hefty and possibly pricey, remember that you are getting Three Books __ and that the subject is A Great Man!

Charlie Wilson S War

Author : George Crile
ISBN : 9781555848095
Genre : History
File Size : 26.55 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 418
Read : 861

The bestselling true story of a Texas congressman’s secret role in the Afghan defeat of Russian invaders is “a tour de force of reporting and writing” (Dan Rather). A New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times bestseller. Charlie Wilson’s penchant for cocktails and beauty-contest winners was well known, but in the early 1980s, the dilettante congressman quietly conducted one of the most successful covert operations in US history. Using his seat on the House Appropriations Committee, Wilson channeled hundreds of millions of dollars to support a ragged band of Afghan “freedom fighters” in their resistance against Soviet invaders. Weapons were secretly procured and distributed with the help of an outcast CIA operative named Gust Avrakotos, who stretched the agency’s rules to the breaking point. Moving from the back rooms of Washington to secret chambers at Langley, and from arms-dealers’ conventions to the Khyber Pass, Wilson and Avrakotos helped the mujahideen win an unlikely victory against the Russians. Adapted into a film starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Charlie Wilson’s War chronicles an overlooked chapter in the collapse of the Soviet Union—and the emergence of a brand-new foe in the form of radical Islam. “Put the Tom Clancy clones back on the shelf; this covert-ops chronicle is practically impossible to put down. No thriller writer would dare invent Wilson.” —Publishers Weekly “An engaging, well-written, newsworthy study of practical politics and its sometimes unlikely players, and one with plenty of implications.” —Kirkus Reviews

Charles Bronson is undoubtedly the most notorious prisoner in Britain and is not only a household name but also as much of an institution as the multitude of Her Majesty’s establishments whose doors he has graced over the last 37 years, most of that time spent in solitary confinement. A film about Charlie’s life and several no-holds-barred autobiographies have allowed us many interesting insights into the real man behind the myths – the fitness fanatic, the poet, the artist, the philosopher and the comic, to name but a few of his myriad faces. So these 100 quiz questions should be more of short brain stretch than a life sentence. Charlie remains in solitary in Wakefield Prison, having had parole refused time and time again. He still dreams of that day of freedom and, together with his friends and well-wishers, will keep fighting for life outside ‘the cage’. These quiz questions, however testing, will ensure that Charlie secures a place at the forefront of our minds and is never forgotten.
