From Sir Winston Churchill to Ellen Terry; Beatrix Potter to Vita Sackville-West: many of the National Trust’s former residents were cat-lovers. Cats of the National Trust explores these feline fanatics and the animals (or animal objects) with which they filled their homes. Each entry includes gorgeous photos and accompanying text describing the collection item, person or animal in the photo and their relevance to the Trust. In Cats of the National Trust, we’ll meet Sir Winston Churchill, who requested that a marmalade cat with a white bib and four white socks should always be in (comfortable) residence at Chartwell, Kent. Thomas Hardy’s ‘Snowdove’ is buried at Max Gate, Dorset; Hardy wrote ‘Last Words to a Dumb Friend’ in eulogy. Discover Victorian actress Ellen Terry, who transported ‘Boo-boo’ between her homes in London and Smallhythe, Kent, and Betty Hussey, who crammed Scotney Castle full of feline objects; its current occupant, a cat named Betsy, can sometimes be found roaming the halls. Together with modern-day examples, Cats of the National Trust is an amusing and heart-warming guide to National Trust pets – and the people who revered them.

The Great Cat And Dog Massacre

Author : Hilda Kean
ISBN : 9780226318325
Genre : History

In 1939, 400,000 cats and dogs were massacred in Britain, their corpses heaped up outside veterinarians offices. Fear of the imminent German blitz led the government to urge pet owners to spare their animal companions so that they would not suffer in the bombing raids. Hilda Kean s gripping narrative of this little-known event includes tales of smuggling pets into bomb shelters, trading bits of cat food on the black market, and preemptively killing thousands of pets at the start of the war to save the food supplies in England. Kean is able to show vividly how pets were an important part of British wartime experience. She pays close attention to animals, both symbolic and actual, arguing that after the pet massacre, human-animal bonds became stronger and closer. In the process of telling this history, Kean necessary complicates the picture of World War II as the good war fought by a nation of good, animal-loving people. Her close use of primary materials (diaries, personal sources, contemporary newspapers, collective public reports on daily life, etc.) gives palpable reality to the animals and their fate at this time. This forgotten aspect of Britain s history makes us rethink accepted accounts of the War and shows the ways in which animal and human histories are inextricably linked. We are also constrained to rethink our assumptions about ourselves and the animals with whom we share our homes."

Renowned for his physical and psychological naturalism, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (15991660) is considered one of the greatest painters to have ever lived. Official court painter to King Philip IV (16051665), he created astounding effects of illusion in his minimalist and elegantly composed workswhich range from genre and history scenes to portraits. His paintings had an enormous impact on 19th- and early-20th-century artists such as Degas, Renoir, and Picasso, and Manet famously first described him as "the painter's painter." With over 150 illustrations and an in-depth chronology, this beautifully produced and comprehensive book surveys Velazquez's entire career and explores his universal popularity. Fascinating essays by world-class Velazquez scholars address the artist's life and technique, examining his studies in Seville and Italy to his final great works at the court of Philip IV. They also place his works in the context of 17th-century European painting and discuss how and why his works have resonated so strongly with the generations of Post-Impressionist and modernist artists.

The court of Charles II was a focus for exuberance, glamor and revelry after the constraints of the Civil War and Interregnum. Portraits, both literary and visual, were an important part of the cultural production of the court, reflecting the spirit of the age as much as the characteristics of the individuals portrayed. The magnificent oil paintings of court women are some of the most sumptuous of all works of art. The first new study of Restoration portraiture in nearly twenty years, this book looks at some of the most beautiful and fascinating portraits of court women of the period, from royal brides and daughters to mistresses and actresses. By studying the context in which their portraits were produced against the biographies and reputations of the women themselves, this book sheds new light on one of the most complex and intriguing areas of British art history. Essays by international scholars explore the cultural context of the Restoration court, sexual politics and the role of women at court, the making and meaning of women's portraits and the critical history of Restoration portraiture. These are supplemented by a lavishly illustrated catalogue of 120 portraits by some of the most important artists of the time, including Lely and Kneller, together with biographies of the sitters themselves.
