* 75 loop hikes throughout Arizona, from easy half-day trails to extended journeys * Hikes for every season, with planning chart for best time to go * Many hikes accessible from Flagstaff, Sedona, Prescott, Phoenix, and Tucson It's Arizona hiking with a welcome twist: no tandem driving, no dropping off a car at the end of the trail, and no turning around to hike back the way you came. Bruce Grubbs has selected the best existing loop trails and stitched together segments of other trails to form new loops. This is a guidebook of tremendous variety. You have your pick of terrain: desert, canyon, mountain, or forest. There are hikes along old pioneer trails, through volcanic fields, and past petroglyph views. To top it off, you'll often hike through several different life zones on the same trail -- Grubbs is your guide in understanding these, too. Best Loop Hikes Arizona includes elevation profiles and charts listing hikes by special interest and best times to go. Water availability is listed for each hike, plus tips on hiking in comfort and safety in Arizona's extreme conditions. Regions covered in this guidebook include Grand Canyon, Mogollon Rim, White Mountains, Mazatzal Mountains, Superstition Mountains, and Southeast Mountains.

What's in the Woods Behind You? True Stories for After Dark... Claim Your FREE Books Each Week With This Book! What is it about sitting round a campfire with friends that makes us want to tell scary stories? Is it that being out there in the woods adds an extra frisson of excitement to stories that might not seem half so frightening if they were told in the security of our homes? Or is it just that people have enjoyed scaring their friends for as long as there have been humans and campfires? You'll read here about the kind of places you really, really don't want to pitch your tent - a haunted ghost town in the US, the most haunted village in England and a forest that's haunted by a whole range of different entities. You'll also read about the murder of campers or people in forests both solved and unsolved. Finally, you'll read the completely unsettling story of nine, healthy, happy young Russian campers who settled down in their tent one night in the Ural Mountains. By the time that the sun came up next morning, they were all dead and to this day, no-one knows precisely what killed them... So, throw another log on the fire and move a little closer because I think I can hear something moving out there, in the darkness under the trees. Are you ready? Then let's tell some scary campfire stories... Here's A Preview Of What's In This Book... ·Techniques for traversing desert terrain-by vehicle, by mountain bike, or on foot ·Strategies for comfort, safety, and survival in extreme conditions ·Selecting gear and equipment for this special environmentLike any desert aficionado, Bruce Grubbs is obsessed with water: how much to bring, how to carry it, how to conserve it, and how to find it in the backcountry. But desert exploration involves much more. Grubbs provides the knowledge and skills you need to move through this landscape with confidence. In addition to techniques for hiking and mountain biking special to desert conditions, Grubbs tells how to prepare your vehicle for remote desert roads and how to avoid getting stuck in sand or busting a tire. He discusses navigating in the desert, "dry camping" skills, and techniques for minimum impact on this starkly beautiful but fragile environment. There are tips for dealing with desert heat-and cold-and other challenges (sharp spiny plants and venomous snakes are easy to avoid with a little preparation and know-how). But just in case, Grubbs troubleshoots the worst-case scenarios. Throughout, he gives an understanding of desert climate and seasons, and the unique plants and creatures at home in it.

Thirteen Terrifying Tales To Tell Around The Campfire

Almost everyone enjoys a good scare now and then, especially kids. In recent years, much of the 'scary' stuff that's out there relies on blood and a bucketful of guts to gross out the reader, viewer or listener. These stories should be a welcome break from those kinds of scares, relying more on imagination and creepiness rather than gore, at least that was the intent when I sat down to write these. A word of caution, some children may not be up to some of the tales contained within-if in doubt give these stories a quick skim before reading them aloud around a campfire or at a sleepover. Of course feel free to change endings or omit parts you think may be disturbing to the little listeners. In that light, the last story might be the one to end with if you want them to get to sleep on time, as it's a bit silly and has a funny ending-at least it was funny when I first heard my uncle tell it to me when I was a little kid, and I guess it still kind of is, so I guess I haven't grown up that much. Other than the final tale which is loosely based on an old story many may have heard in some form, and which was passed down the generations from my family, these stories are all my original creations, gathered from ideas and nightmares I remember being scared of when I was a child, and some, I must admit, still scare me to this day. Remember, there's no shame in sleeping with a nightlight, or in letting the batteries drain on your flashlight when you leave it on all night next to your sleeping bag within easy grasp. After all, it can't do any harm, and no one else has to know...

Cyberpunk is dead. The revolution has been co-opted by half-assed heroes, overclocked CGI, and tricked-out shades. Once radical, cyberpunk is now nothing more than a brand. Time to stop flipping the channel. These sixteen extreme stories reveal a government ninja routed by a bicycle repairman, the inventor of digitized paper hijacked by his college crush, a dead boy trapped in a warped storybook paradise, and the queen of England attacked with the deadliest of forbidden technology: a working modem. You’ll meet Manfred Macx, renegade meme-broker, Red Sonja, virtual reality sex-goddess, and Felix, humble sys-admin and post-apocalyptic hero. Editors James Patrick Kelly and John Kessel (Feeling Very Strange: The Slipstream Anthology) have united cyberpunk visionaries William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and Pat Cadigan with the new post-cyberpunk vanguard, including Cory Doctorow, Charles Stross, and Jonathan Lethem. Including a canon-establishing introduction and excerpts from a hotly contested online debate, Rewired is the first anthology to define and capture the crackling excitement of the post-cyberpunks. From the grittiness of Mirrorshades to the Singularity and beyond, it’s time to revive the revolution.
