The firm of Cammell Laird originated in a boiler works in 1824 before growing and diversifying to become one of a small number of companies worldwide which could build, armor and arm the largest warships from the operations of a single company group. After World War I, it was reconstructed as a naval and mercantile shipbuilder with important financial interests in steel and rolling stock manufacture. Booming activity in World War II and continuing prosperity until the late 1950s was followed by increasing competition and deepening problems. By the 1980s the firm’s remaining steel interests had failed; in 1993 the once great Birkenhead shipyard closed. How and why did the businesses grow, then experience such problems and eventually collapse? This book tries to find answers. "... this study will be of great value to those researching the development of heavy industry in Britain."—Business History "... a gold mine of information and guidance for future historians."—Nautical Research Journal

Since its founding as an engine manufacturer in the 1820s, Cammell Laird has had connections with the British and foreign navies. The Birkenhead shipbuilding yard has made many ships for the Royal Navy including many submarines, destroyers, dreadnoughts, aircraft carriers and cruisers. Once an employer of thousands, the yard is empty of the noise of welders, riveters, joiners, engineers and the myriad other skilled tradesmen needed to build a ship but its history remains – one that reads like a roll of honour for the British Navy; Ark Royal, Audacious, Birkenhead, Chester, Hardy, Hogue, HM/S Thetis, to name a few. Illustrated with many previously unpublished images, this will prove to be the definitive book on the most famous of the Cammell Laird-built Navy vessels. As well as British navy ships, the book includes a varied selection of foreign naval vessels from the Confederate blockade runner Alabama to many ships and submarines built for navies around the world.

This first volume of the Official History studies the background to privatisation, and the privatisations of the first two Conservative Governments led by Margaret Thatcher from May 1979 to June 1987. First commissioned by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair as an authoritative history, this volume addresses a number of key questions: To what extent was privatisation a clear policy commitment within the Thatcher Governments of the 1980s - or did Government simply stumble on the idea? Why were particular public corporations sold early in the 1980s and other sales delayed until well into the 1990s? What were the privatisation objectives and how did they change over time, if at all? How was each privatisation planned and executed, how were different City advisers appointed and remunerated, what precise roles did they play? How was each privatisation administered; in what ways did the methods evolve and change and why? How were sale prices determined? Which government departments took the lead role; what was the input of the Treasury and Bank of England; and what was the relationship between Ministers and civil servants? The study draws heavily from the official records of the British Government to which the author was given full access and from interviews with leading figures involved in each of the privatisations – including ex-Ministers, civil servants, business and City figures, as well as academics that have studied the subject. This new official history will be of much interest to students of British political history, economics and business studies.

In 1984 Cammell Laird workers took official strike action over job losses. 37 workers were dismissed, jailed for 30 days in the high security Walton Jail and all their redundancy and pension rights were rescinded. Efforts to locate official documentation related to the decision to prosecute them, the severity of the sentencing for contempt, their incarceration in the high security Walton Prison and the termination of all employment rights by the company, have failed. They have campaigned for 30 years. In December 2014 the European Parliament Petitions' Committee supported the rght the Cammell Laird's strikers to have this information, a formal apology and the right to compensation. The DVD tells their story -- summarised from GMB website and card accompanying the DVD.
