The Interstellar Mining Vehicle Caliban cruises through warp space, her crew enduring grim and sterile life in the artificial environment within her hull. Countless billions of miles from home, they search for mineral resources that will feed the industries of an exhausted Earth. They know the rules: if anything goes wrong, no one is coming to help them. They are on their own. A catastrophic collision with a mystery vessel leaves the Caliban crippled and drifting, systems failing, crew desperate. Their one chance lies aboard the other ship--an alien hulk apparently long-abandoned, with a cargo in her holds beyond all human comprehension. But deep in those endless hallways something else is stirring. And soon the few survivors are dying, seemingly at the hands of one of their own comrades.

We are now in the Age of Caliban rather than in the Time of Ariel or the Era of Prospero, Harold Bloom claimed in 1992. Bloom was specifically referring to Caliban's rising popularity as the prototype of the colonised or repressed subject, especially since the 1980s. However, already earlier the figure of Caliban had inspired artists from the most divergent backgrounds: Robert Browning, Ernest Renan, Aimé Césaire, and Peter Greenaway, to name only some of the better known.Much has already been published on Caliban, and there exist a number of excellent surveys of this character's appearance in literature and the other arts. The present collection does not aim to trace Caliban over the ages. Rather,Constellation Caliban intends to look at a number of specific refigurations of Caliban. What is the Caliban-figure's role and function within a specific work of art? What is its relation to the other signifiers in that work of art? What interests are invested in the Caliban-figure, what values does it represent or advocate? Whose interests and values are these? These and similar questions guided the contributors to the present volume. In other words, what one finds here is not a study of origins, not a genealogy, not a reception-study, but rather a fascinating series of case studies informed by current theoretical debate in areas such as women's studies, sociology of literature and of the intellectuals, nation-formation, new historicism, etc. Its interdisciplinary approach and its attention to matters of multi-culturalism make Constellation Caliban into an unusually wide ranging and highly original contribution to Shakespeare-studies. The book should appeal to students of English Literature, Modern European Literature, Comparative Literature, Drama or Theatre Studies, and Cultural Studies, as well as to anyone interested in looking at literature within a broad social and historical context while still appreciating detailed textual analyses.

NOW A PRIME ORIGINAL SERIES Caliban's War is the second book in the New York Times bestselling Expanse series. For someone who didn't intend to wreck the solar system's fragile balance of power, Jim Holden did a pretty good job of it. While Earth and Mars have stopped shooting each other, the core alliance is shattered. The outer planets and the Belt are uncertain in their new - possibly temporary - autonomy. Then, on one of Jupiter's moons, a single super-soldier attacks, slaughtering soldiers of Earth and Mars indiscriminately and reigniting the war. The race is on to discover whether this is the vanguard of an alien army, or if the danger lies closer to home. The Expanse series has sold over two million copies worldwide and is now a major television series. The Caliban-Prospero encounter in Shakespeare's The Tempest has evolved as a metaphor for the colonial experience. This book utilizes the Caliban symbol in examining the influence of colonialism in Caribbean literature, focusing on three major writers: Jean Rhys of Dominica, George Lamming of Barbados, and Sam Selvon of Trinidad. The novels chosen are set in England where the writers and their characters experience the alienation of the exiled--unwelcome in Prospero's home country. Other Caribbean writers are included in the analysis, and the volume concludes by examining contemporary writers for whom Caliban's role appears to be shifting beyond physical exile.

VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY, BRIEF EDITION, masterfully uses the theme of movement−the journeys of peoples, ideas, and goods−to help students make sense of the huge range of people, places, and events throughout history. Each chapter is framed around the story of a person who traveled within the time period and region under discussion. Students can practice being critical readers by evaluating the traveler's observations and attitudes. A primary source feature, “Movement of Ideas,” helps students develop the core skill of analyzing sources by allowing them to compare multiple explanations of significant ideas. This brief text meets the needs of instructors who want a lively narrative style without sacrificing the themes and pedagogy that make world history understandable to students; it is also ideal for instructors who want to supplement a text with many primary sources. Available in the following options: VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY, BRIEF EDITION, 2nd Edition (Chapters 1−32); Volume I: To 1600 (Chapters 1−16); Volume II: Since 1500 (Chapters 15−32). 'I loved Mrs Caliban. So deft and austere in its prose, so drolly casual in its fantasy...' John Updike First published in 1982, Mrs Caliban was in 1986 selected by the British Book Marketing Council as one of the 20 best post-war American novels. 'Ingalls takes a B-movie premise (aquatic humanoid escapes from lab) and pounds it into a thrilling new shape - a vehicle for social satire, kitchen-sink realism, surreal domesticity, and just plain blood-curdling screams. The book deals with incest and insanity, curtailed feminine social spheres and the Other; horrific violence and a palpable sadness saturate the pages.' Ed Park, Village Voice This volume also includes two story collections, Three of a Kind and The End of Tragedy, so making a tremendous primer in the subtle prose style and fabulist force of Rachel Ingalls.
