A daughter's narrative about life with and without her father, whose death plunges her into deep grief but gradually becomes her most compelling reason to hope. Like so many Christian women, Rebecca, her mother, and her two sisters love a man who does not walk beside them in faith. As his cancer returns after a year of remission, they face his last days. As the women in his life struggle to savor their final times together and let go, he finally reaches out to God, and tells them so. Her father's death opens the landscape of heaven and hope to her. She beautifully renders those visions as well as the underbelly of sorrow as she is finally forced to wake up to the world, to new hungers, and to a far more dangerous faith. Here is a spiritual coming of age manifesto that will take its place alongside Voskamp and Lamott as uplifting writing on loss, grief, and growing up, quick.

This novel lays bare the customs and conditions most young girls face in traditional African society south of the Sahara, while in transition from adolescence to womanhood. The priority of parents is for marriage, which produces pressure on both mother and daughter. In this story, Amina, the mother of Sadia, faces the odds of traditional settings to meet the expected standard in marriage. Dankantata is the rebellious suitor to Sadia, and against wisdom and logic, is a hard-core traditionalist. He will not bow down for a minute against his ego, even when it is in his own self-interest to comply with the wishes of his fiancée. The situation eventually leads him to court, with the ensuing case exposing the existing traditions represented by the Imams, clerics, and priests, as well as the cultural norms and state laws. The debate is well crafted and so interesting that it draws in readers with its depiction of marriage in another culture.

When I uttered that prayer in the dark of night on the other side of the planet, I'm not sure I completely comprehended what I was letting myself in for . . . This is a book about the soul of a leader fully surrendered. There are lots of ministry leadership books about trends and technologies and how to do what best and when to do what when. But few begin organically: with the "you" that you bring to ministry. This is where Matthew Cork begins. Matthew here shares a journey that is part memoir, part guidebook, all honest. "Life beats you up," he says-especially when you stop hiding and start risking. He tells the story of facing devastating betrayal at home while at the same time witnessing incredible things through ministry efforts abroad.

A Note from the Tanna Kamma: The laws regarding the release from vows hover in the air (having no Scriptural support). The laws of Shabbat; of the Festival Offerings; and acts of trespass; are like mountains suspended by a hair; for there are but scant Scriptural foundation for them but there are numerous halakhot for them. Civil cases; Temple services; the regulations concerning purity and contamination; and the forbidden sexual relations; all of these have true and firm Scriptural support. AND IT IS THESE {the ones with true and firm Scriptural support) WHICH ARE THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE TORAH [The last Paragraph of Chapter One of the Hagigah Mishna; found at 10a-i of the Art Scroll rendition (with some modifications). The passage is orchestrated by the Tanna Kamma.]
