The focus of this book is the spiritual work in the "school"--the community--of Michael. What does this mean? At the end of the eighteenth century, the Archangel Michael revealed the new mystery that has manifested on Earth as spiritual science, or anthroposophy. Its essence involves the renewal of our knowledge of the mysteries of karma and human destiny. Those who are drawn to this school have a special relationship to the human faculty of thinking--their inner feeling for truth has the strength of iron. This feeling for truth helps them to become companions of Michael at the threshold of the spiritual world. These talks deal with the spiritual path of anthroposophy in its Christian Rosicrudian aspect. Tomberg speaks openly and honestly about meditation, the various stages of consciousness (imagination, inspiration, and intuition), the "guardian of the threshold," and the esoteric trials one encounters along the way. He concludes by describing the life of Rudolf Steiner as the life of a Christian initiate. CONTENTS Introduction: Valentin Tomberg 1. The New Michael Community and its Significance for the Future 2. Meditation--Its Being and its Effect 3. Indian Yoga in Relation to the Christian-Rosicrucian Path 4. Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition 5. The Two Guardians of the Threshold 6. The Occult Trials 7. Rudolf Steiner's Life-Path as the Way of the Christian Initiate This book was originally published in German as Sieben Vorträge über die innere Entwicklung des Menschen.

Rudolf Steiner is perhaps best known for his influence and wisdom in the fields of education, agriculture, medicine, science, and art. It is often forgotten that it was as a spiritual teacher that he made these contributions. Unfortunately, while his immediate students had the advantage of Steiner as a personal guide to their inner lives, later readers have had only his written works to guide them. Steiner, however, did give a few lectures on inner development--especially on beginning a path of practice. This book now collects these lectures--some of which have never been in English--for the first time. It also contains a number of the basic meditations and exercises shared by Steiner with his students. Here readers will find descriptions of various practical exercises, including exercises for the moral qualities that students must develop, and for the various qualities of consciousness that inner development requires. This book is not only for beginners. Wherever you are on the path, this book will be your companion. CONTENTS: Introduction by Christopher Bamford 1. The Inner Life 2. The Path 3. First Steps 4. We live in a world characterized by intolerance, war, environmental degradation and economic collapse. In contrast, might it be possible to build a society in which tolerance, love and peace are the abiding principles? In this positive and inspiring book Danielle van Dijk shows how, beginning with our personal development, we can contribute to such a new, transformed world. She describes how we can develop a universal spiritual consciousness - what she refers to as 'Christ Consciousness'. Van Dijk emphasizes that the Christian mysteries took place on the physical plane, and distinguishes with great clarity between Jesus as a human being, the incarnation of Christ on earth, and the cosmic Christ. She builds bridges between the spiritual research of Rudolf Steiner, the Nag Hammadi writings and the gospels of Mary Magdalene and Judas, culminating in a comprehensive and wide-ranging picture of Christ. By gaining insight into the nature of Christ's being, and undertaking practical exercises described here, each of us can achieve the new Christ Consciousness. In ancient times, selected individuals underwent rites of initiation within secret mystery schools.Disclosing the knowledge obtained there was punishable by death. In our time, however, the spiritual mysteries have become open and available to all. Initiation, says the author, involves 'walking the inner path to all-embracing love, which is known in gnostic and esoteric lore as Christ, the highest divine Being', leading to 'a sublime cosmic-orientated consciousness, which comes into existence when the higher self wholly exists within the individual human being.

This collection of lectures contains Steiner's strongest statements on the issues of human relationships within a spiritual community. Occasioned by a scandal involving people influenced by psychoanalysis, these lectures are Steiner's comprehensive assessment of Freud's work and psychoanalysis as a whole. Steiner shows, our physical life, including human sexuality, has spiritual roots; and that looking to sexuality for the explanation of human behavior is therefore looking in the wrong direction. He also makes clear that becoming part of a spiritual community, such as the Anthroposophical Society, entails special responsibilities and a new way of being.

The so-called 'supplementary exercises' - to be carried out alongside the 'review exercises' and meditation - are integral to the path of personal development presented by Rudolf Steiner. Together they form a means of experiencing the spiritual realm in full consciousness. Meditation enlivens thinking, the review exercises cultivate the will, whilst the supplementary exercises educate and balance feeling. Conscientiously practised, this path of self-knowledge and development has the effect of opening a source of inner strength and psychological health that soon make themselves felt in daily life. In six stages these exercises enable the practise of qualities that can be summarized as: control of thoughts, initiative of will, equanimity, positivity, open-mindedness and equilibrium of soul. When carried out regularly, they balance possible harmful effects of meditative practice and bring inner certainty and security to the soul. They are also of inestimable value in their own right due to their beneficial and wholesome effect on daily life. In this invaluable small book, the editor has drawn together virtually all Rudolf Steiner's statements on the supplementary exercises, supporting them with commentary and notes. With a chapter devoted to each exercise, they are described in detail and from different perspectives.
