NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of On Tyranny comes a stunning new chronicle of the rise of authoritarianism from Russia to Europe and America. “A brilliant analysis of our time.”—Karl Ove Knausgaard, The New Yorker With the end of the Cold War, the victory of liberal democracy seemed final. Observers declared the end of history, confident in a peaceful, globalized future. This faith was misplaced. Authoritarianism returned to Russia, as Putin found fascist ideas that could be used to justify rule by the wealthy. In the 2010s, it has spread from east to west, aided by Russian warfare in Ukraine and cyberwar in Europe and the United States. Russia found allies among nationalists, oligarchs, and radicals everywhere, and its drive to dissolve Western institutions, states, and values found resonance within the West itself. The rise of populism, the British vote against the EU, and the election of Donald Trump were all Russian goals, but their achievement reveals the vulnerability of Western societies. In this forceful and unsparing work of contemporary history, based on vast research as well as personal reporting, Snyder goes beyond the headlines to expose the true nature of the threat to democracy and law. To understand the challenge is to see, and perhaps renew, the fundamental political virtues offered by tradition and demanded by the future. By revealing the stark choices before us--between equality or oligarchy, individuality or totality, truth and falsehood--Snyder restores our understanding of the basis of our way of life, offering a way forward in a time of terrible uncertainty.

Within the concentric circles of Trump's regime lies an unseen culture of occultists, power-seekers, and mind-magicians whose influence is on the rise. In this unparalleled account, historian Gary Lachman examines the influence of occult and esoteric philosophy on the unexpected rise of the alt-right. Did positive thinking and mental science help put Donald Trump in the White House? And are there any other hidden powers of the mind and thought at work in today's world politics? In Dark Star Rising: Magick and Power in the Age of Trump, historian and cultural critic Gary Lachman takes a close look at the various magical and esoteric ideas that are impacting political events across the globe. From New Thought and Chaos Magick to the far-right esotericism of Julius Evola and the Traditionalists, Lachman follows a trail of mystic clues that involve, among others, Norman Vincent Peale, domineering gurus and demagogues, Ayn Rand, Pepe the Frog, Rene Schwaller de Lubicz, synarchy, the Alt-Right, meme magic, and Vladimir Putin and his postmodern Rasputin. Come take a drop down the rabbit hole of occult politics in the twenty-first century and find out the post-truths and alternative facts surrounding the 45th President of the United States with one of the leading writers on esotericism and its influence on modern culture.

"The National Bolshevik Party, founded in the mid-1990s by Eduard Limonov and Aleksandr Dugin, began as an attempt to combine radically different ideologies: bolshevism and nationalism. In the years that followed, Limonov, Dugin, and the movements they led underwent dramatic shifts that eventually led to the support of Putin's conservative, imperialist regime over social justice and fundamental civil liberties. To illuminate the role of these right-wing ideas in contemporary Russian society, Fabrizio Fenghi examines the public pronouncements and aesthetics of this influential movement. He analyzes a diverse range of media, including novels, art exhibitions, performances, seminars, punk rock concerts, and even protest actions. His interviews with key figures reveal an attempt to create an alternative intellectual class, or a "counter-intelligensia." This volume shows how certain forms of art can transform into political action through the creation of new languages, institutions, and modes of collective participation"--

My father taught me a love of nature and its creatures, for which I am deeply grateful. I am at peace when riding down a country road, seeing the antelope on the prairie, the eagle floating smoothly above me, hearing the unwritten notes of the meadowlark's song, or catching sunlight glinting off a blackbird's feathers. To describe my writing, would be life, for each poem and story is a tapestry of life woven from the threads of the person or persons who lived it. Excerpt from "Queen of the Night" (The legend of Dell Burke): Moon shadows crept along the wall, Black and uneven, short and tall; The candle had burned; its light was gone, But another light shone - the light of dawn... May one of my poems or story gratify your soul and carry you on wondrous wings down your own dusty road ... for our minds are magical. With a word, a smell, or sight, we are flown back on wings of lightning, reliving memories long lost; momentarily suspended in another time and place.

The Ship Of Birth

Author : Greg Delanty
ISBN : 9780807132180
Genre : Poetry
File Size : 77.63 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 764
Read : 265

The Ship of Birth records a father's responses in the time immediately before and after the birth of his child. Just as material significant to the dead is placed in a ship of death, so this ship of birth contains what is significant to the child: the wonder and trepidation of the parents, the nature of the soul, the future growth of the child. Greg Delanty's poems draw on his experiences in American and Irish cultures, using the traditional verse structures of seventeenth-century religious poets along with open modern colloquial forms to evoke the subtle interconnections of the past and future. Without sentimentality or self-indulgence, Delanty acknowledges the dark and difficult reality that the child faces, while affirming the sustaining continuity of life.

Old Friend We Made This For You

Author : Yannick Marshall
ISBN : 9781551303314
Genre : Poetry
File Size : 55.72 MB

This collection of poetry is a plea and a gift from two black youths to Africans of the continent and the Diaspora. We sought to explore the broadest themes and most salient of issues facing Africans. Through these poems and essays we offer our views, ideas, questions, and art first and foremost to our people, our 'Old friends'. "Old Friend, we made this for you" is our contribution as two, young, black, ready poets to the discourse on Africa and Africa's redemption. Marshall and Aganga met in secondary school in Botswana. Shortly after sharing poems and ideas they began working on a project that reflected a Pan-Afrikan vision from both the African and African Diaspora's perspective. That project evolved into a collection of poems called "Old Friend We Made This For You" . Olayemi Aganga born in Nigeria and living most of his life in Botswana has a unique understanding of the issues facing the continent. Living in Sub-Saharan Africa he has witnessed the regions plight with Aids, violence and poverty and has first-hand experience of what it means to be an expatriate Nigerian in Southern Africa. As such his poems are well rooted in the politics, culture and the urban experience on the continent. Yannick Marshall born in Canada to black Caribbean parents has a firm understanding of the Caribbean immigrant experience and what it means to be black and a descendant of slaves in North America. As a member of the black conscious African Diaspora his poems reflect the slave and post-slavery experience and the slave's mystic romanticism of the continent.

Once upon a time there was a mirror. . . . So begins this dark, unusual retelling of the story of Snow White by the writer reviewers have called "the Angela Carter of the fantasy field"—a whole novel based on a beloved story, turning it into a dark and sensual drama full of myth and magic. Arpazia is the aging queen who paces the halls of a warlord's palace. Cold as winter, she has only one passion—for the mysterious hunter who courts the outlawed old gods of the woodland. Coira is the princess raised in the shadow of her mother's hatred. Avoided by both her parents and half forgotten by her father's court, she grows into womanhood alone . . . until the mirror speaks, and blood is spilled, and the forest claims her. The tragic myth of the goddess Demeter and her daughter, Persephone, stolen by the king of the underworld, is woven together with the tale of Snow White to create a powerful story of mothers and daughters and the blood that binds them together, for good or ill. Black queen. White maid. Royal huntsman. Seven little folk who live in the forest. Come inside, sit by the fire, and listen to this fairy tale as you've never heard it told before. Once upon a time there was a mirror, and a girl as white as snow. . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This textbook was designed by a former Flight Paramedic of 15 years, as well as a Commercial Rated Helicopter and Airplane, and an FAA licensed CFI and CFI-I for both helicopters and airplanes. This class is provocative, direct, and will address scenarios that have occurred in recent years in air medical; which had one of the largest death rates in the history of HEMS. We will teach the participant to make informed decisions about weather, learn to interpret weather, trends, synopses, and forecasts. We will address how to interpret METARS, FA's, and TAFS. Emergency survival skills will be addressed, as well as FAA Rules and Regulations concerning the HEMS environment. We also look at case studies of various crashes and examine the weather that was reporting at the time and conclude what could have been done differently. This book is the most needed book in aviation, and air medical industry, and will aid the participant in making informed decisions, so they can decide whether a "go or no-go" is best.
