The Black Tetra (scientifically known as Gymnocorymbus Ternetzi) is a freshwater fish that is part of the Characin family. It is also commonly known as the Black Skirt Tetra, the Petticoat Tetra, the High-finn Black Skirt Tetra and the Black Widow Tetra. It is native to Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. The Black Tetra has a tetragonal body shape and has a greyish coloration - the bottom half of its body is a blackish color that fades into a light grey towards the front of its body. There are two prominent vertical black bars present near its gills. The Black Tetra was used in the creation of the genetically modified Glofish, which have a bright florescent coloration. The Black Tetra is a very popular species to be kept in home aquariums and is therefore widely available worldwide for purchase. Before purchasing any fish it is important to understand that as a fish owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your fish.
