In this seventh installment in the Hannah of Fort Bridger series, twin tragedies set the stage for God's glorious provision. A vicious mountain lion attack leaves beautiful, young rancher Carrie Wright a widow. An outlaw on his way to prison escapes the law long enough to shoot Doug McClain's wife, making him the lonely father of a young daughter. Then heroine Hannah Cooper, newly widowed herself, comforts Carrie with the knowledge that while God's servants will tread through the valley of weeping, they will also keep moving toward another mountaintop. When employment opportunities bring Doug and Carrie together, unexpected sparks fly and finally they can envision a future "beyond the valley."

HETHERINGTON BEYOND THE VALLEY Back Cover Material In the fall of 2003, I was left a widow. Married for forty years, and now alone, I began a journey ... a journey from the deepest grief to a pathway of hope. Out of the depths of my sorrow, I have written a book in which I have shared the cry of my innermost heart to God. God does give hope to the brokenhearted, but it hasn't been an easy journey. It takes time - for me, a long time to journey through grief, but I am learning that there is life again and also a purpose and plan as I place my trust in God. My desire is to bring comfort and hope to others who have lost a spouse, and to show that one is never alone in the journey back to living again. Carol Baker Hetherington is the widow of the Rev. James E. Hetherington, former pastor of Lighthouse Assembly of God in Cleveland, Ohio. She presently resides in Northeastern Ohio, and is an active member of Rock of Grace Family Ministries, involved in several ministries, one of which reaches out to the widow. A mother of three grown children and grandmother of four, Carol keeps busy with family, and also finds time to enjoy her interests in writing, quilting and decorating. Included also is a love of the outdoors as she enjoys walking and spending time in her gardens.

How to repair the disconnect between designers and users, producers and consumers, and tech elites and the rest of us: toward a more democratic internet. In this provocative book, Ramesh Srinivasan describes the internet as both an enabler of frictionless efficiency and a dirty tangle of politics, economics, and other inefficient, inharmonious human activities. We may love the immediacy of Google search results, the convenience of buying from Amazon, and the elegance and power of our Apple devices, but it's a one-way, top-down process. We're not asked for our input, or our opinions--only for our data. The internet is brought to us by wealthy technologists in Silicon Valley and China. It's time, Srinivasan argues, that we think in terms beyond the Valley. Srinivasan focuses on the disconnection he sees between designers and users, producers and consumers, and tech elites and the rest of us. The recent Cambridge Analytica and Russian misinformation scandals exemplify the imbalance of a digital world that puts profits before inclusivity and democracy. In search of a more democratic internet, Srinivasan takes us to the mountains of Oaxaca, East and West Africa, China, Scandinavia, North America, and elsewhere, visiting the "design labs" of rural, low-income, and indigenous people around the world. He talks to a range of high-profile public figures--including Elizabeth Warren, David Axelrod, Eric Holder, Noam Chomsky, Lawrence Lessig, and the founders of Reddit, as well as community organizers, labor leaders, and human rights activists.. To make a better internet, Srinivasan says, we need a new ethic of diversity, openness, and inclusivity, empowering those now excluded from decisions about how technologies are designed, who profits from them, and who are surveilled and exploited by them.

Dakota Walker Randell had lived in the valley all his younger years with no plan to leave. His friends were all there, most importantly Linda Martin, who was his girlfriend—even if he did not know it at first. Still they spent a great deal of time together horseback riding in the valley. Linda lived in the biggest house in the valley, while Dakota lived in a small house in a ghost town. Linda’s family had money, while Dakota’s father was the former pastor of the valley church. Now he was the valley drunk, and all he had was his horse and his dog. In Dakota’s senior year of high school, he was sick of caring for his father. He wanted a life of his own, maybe with Linda. You think you have nothing, then you have it all, and then she is gone. What happened after that makes a new life as well as a story of a man in search of answers. This is also a story of a girl searching for answers, as well as what they find in a truck stop one morning, sixteen year later.

Welcome Home Sitting on the steps of his cabin Dakota Walker Randell sipped his coffee as he looked toward the mountains. He had never expected his family to throw him a party when he started spending more time at home. Still it would have been nice if they had at least been happy to see him. His kids didnt really know him, his ex-wife wasnt talking to him even Susan was ignoring him. All he had for company was the dog and he wasnt even sure where the dog had come from. It was hard to explain the dog was just there at the cabin when he was in the valley. Dakota was a man who had to set things straight with his family but that was not going to be as easy as he had hoped. After all where do you start? What do you say to your children and their mothers? He had parked his truck for a time because his father and uncle had asked for his help. They hadnt told him what they needed his help with. Over the years the valley had changed it was a place for tourists these days Dakota wasnt sure he liked that. He wasnt sure being around his ex-wife and his ex-girlfriend at the same time really sound like a fun time to him. Those two women were not the sharing type years earlier. He was sure they were not going to be in a sharing mood now. He should have stayed in his truck but he had said he would help the family. If he was going to keep his word he was going to have to stay around. If he was going to have any company at all while he was in the valley it looked like the dog was going to have to learn how to talk.

"Beyond the Valley" has been a culmination of devotional thoughts expressed through experiences. As we come from different backgrounds and varying situations in life, the things that motivate us, and the way we deal with life can be hugely different. However, there are some similarities in some of our coping strategies. My reason for writing this book stems from my own personal strategy of creatively interpreting life experiences through poetry. This has helped me cope with situations in my life, which we all face from time to time like divorce, unemployment, bereavement and ill-health. As a mother of two, it has been a privilege to encourage my children in preparation for the challenges they will meet in later life; developing a trust in God and being able to ask for His guidance in the magnitude of choices they make. "Beyond the Valley" was written to show that it is not so much about doing great things, but doing things in a great and individual way. Our experiences and ambitions differ, but our importance and uniqueness should keep us rising to the top. When we think of the beauty of nature it can lift our spirits by the promise of better things to come. This adds a new and positive approach to life. Life may place us in a valley situation, but we needn't stay there. We can use these circumstances to enable us to rise above those troubles that prevent our success in life. There is always potential to be tapped and resources that we never thought were there. The same God who is with us in our valleys can also be with us on the mountaintop. He can give us the ability to reach forward courageously: Beyond the Valley!

The close-knit villages of the Dearne Valley were home to four generations of the Hollingworth family. Spanning Richard Benson's great-grandmother Winnie's ninety-two years in the valley, and drawing on years of historical research, interviews and anecdotes, The Valley lets us into generations of carousing and banter as the family's attempts to build a better and fairer world for themselves meet sometimes with triumph, sometimes with bitter defeat. Against a backdrop of underground explosions, strikes and pit closures, these are unflinching, deeply personal stories of battles between the sexes in a man's world sustained by strong women; of growing up, and the power of love and imagination to transform lives.
