In this revealing, in-depth look at the NFL's greatest quarterback controversy, Adam Lazarus takes readers into the locker room and inside the huddle to deliver the real story behind the rivalry—when Joe Montana and Steve Young battled on and off the field and forged one of the finest football dynasties of all time. From 1987 to 1994, the two future Hall of Famers spurred each other on to remarkable heights, including three Super Bowl wins and four MVP awards, and set new standards for quarterback excellence. The two men couldn't have been more different in background, personality, and playing style, and their competition created as much tension as it did greatness, forcing Montana to prove that he was still the game's best quarterback and Young to prove that he was a worthy successor. Featuring candid interviews with Montana, Young, Jerry Rice, George Seifert, and many more, Best of Rivals brings to life the story of two sports legends, the golden era of football their rivalry presided over, and the amazing legacy it produced.

Three sisters find themselves caught in the royal intrigues of Tudor England in this historical romance from the author of The Boleyn Bride. The Ladies Jane, Katherine, and Mary Grey were born in an age when all of London lived beneath the menacing shadow of the Tower. Tyrannized by Bloody Mary and then Elizabeth I, the sisters feared that love was unthinkable—and the scaffold all but unavoidable. Raised to fear her royal blood and what it might lead men to do in her name, Mary dreads what will become of herself and her elder sisters. On their honor, they have no designs for the crown, yet are condemned to solitude, forbidden to wed without permission from the queen—a permission that would never come. And though Mary is accustomed to dwelling in the shadows and may never catch the eye of a gentleman, her beautiful and brilliant sisters long for freedoms that would surely cost their lives. Now, Mary can only trust in divine providence to provide a chance for love and happiness—unless destiny gains the upper hand . . . A gripping and bittersweet tale of broken families and broken hearts, courage and conviction, The Queen’s Rivals recounts an astonishing chapter in the hard-won battle for the Tudor throne.

Rivals is both the ultimate directory of football derbies and a collection of the stats that 'really matter' for the English League Clubs. Forget the dry and oft-quoted football facts, 'Rivals' arms the reader with a completely new set of fan-based stats. Find out which club has the highest 'nutter rating' (arrests per 1,000 attendance), or the worst 'Your ground's too big for you' ranking! Which club offers their supporters the worst 'Fans' value-for-money' (admission price as a ratio of 5 year league position!) There are many intriguing, often funny, stories behind the web of little publicised, though frequently intense, rivalries between clubs and fans. With many contributions from supporters, the book examines the extraordinary cult of British Football Derbies, looking at the inter-town and regional biases, stereotypes, and opinions that fans have about their footballing rivals. At 240pp, Rivals is a light-hearted collection of statistics, fans' testimony and boundless trivia. The book uncovers the amusing, bizarre, and sometimes alarming portraits of the intensity of fans' feelings, and the way in which they perceive other teams, towns and cities. It has a clear format pulling together diverse facts. Attractively designed with information given under headings allowing the reader to compare various facts on a club-to-club basis, the text can be read from cover to cover or dipped into.

From their founding, the Massachusetts communities of Leominster and Fitchburg have shared the same river. More than that, they have long shared a special football competition that has sometimes spilled beyond the field. Author and historian Mark Bodanza captures the human drama of one of the nation's oldest football rivalries; the high schools of Leominster and Fitchburg have met on the gridiron for 114 years. Compiled from newspaper articles, school yearbooks, game programs, eyewitness accounts, letters, photos, and archival records, he not only chronicles the development of football from its earliest days, but also tells the story of two communities that saw, in football, a way to grasp civic pride.

Becoming Rivals

Rivalries are a fundamental aspect of all international interactions. The concept of rivalry suggests that historic animosity may be the most fundamental variable in explaining and understanding why states commit international violence against each other. By understanding the historic factors behind the emergence of rivalry, the strategies employed by states to deal with potential threats, and the issues endemic to enemies, this book seeks to understand and predict why states become rivals. The recent increase in the quantitative study of rivalry has largely identified who the rivals are, but not how they form and escalate. Questions about the escalation of rivalry are important if we are to understand the nature of conflictual interactions. This book addresses an important research gap in the field by directly tackling the question of rivalry formation. In addition to making new contributions to the literature, this book will summarize a cohesive model of how all interstate rivalries form by using both quantitative and qualitative methods and sources.
